Hey all! So I thought I could start a simple 1 day build, and then realized, like Adam Savage says, there is no such thing as a one day build that takes one day.
I wanted to make my nephew something unique for Christmas. The little guy is a huge Star Wars fan, and each time he comes to our house he says, "Uncle B, can you put on Star Wars?" Seriously, as a fan can you imagine a more awesome request from a 4 year old. Further put, he asks for "Original Trilogy." I swear I am not making that up. He literally asks that question!!!.
So, I decided that a Tatooine theme, along with my favorite droid . . . the Gonk would be best!!! After a quick visit on Thanksgiving I decided that his room was lacking a nightlight and a bedside lamp. So that was the inspiration and practical application for this build.
I found a couple of "small-ish" rubbermaid bins at Home depot, along with a PVC fitting that I thought would work for the "Light-tower" and started assembly. I was able to fit a Low-Voltage retro ring in the upper rubbermaid for the face of the Gonk droid, and then added some of the detail. Because I recorded video for most of the build I don't have a lot of progress photos. I need to get better at that.
I cut the feet from MDF, built the light stand, and assembled as much of the build using parts and pieces I had around the shop. The only real purchases I made for this was the bulb, which is LED so it wont be hot enough to burn my nephew, the socket, and the sand.
I had a heck of a time working the sand into the display by glueing it down. On my YouTube video i got some great recommendations to use material like Resin or Modge Podge to glue the sand in place. This came recommend by our friend Wayne Bakken that we will certainly try later.
And if you all get a chance, here is a link to our build video. We are having a blast putting these videos together for the crazy geek stuff we build. It all comes back to the RPF where I have learned and loved so many of the projects built here. Hope you all have an amazing week!!!!
