Star Wars blu ray in September

I am more interested about all the bonus stuff from the OT than everything else. Just this is worth every cent of what Lucas wants from me. I don´t care much of the movies themselves (and nothing of the PT)...

Lucas can keep is CGI crap. I'm happy with my Laserdisc put on DVD and upconverted. At least i am still looking at real filming models.

I am already scared by this release. The SE color was just horrible. Blue hue throughout ESB :sick. To release them on blu-Ray I hope they fixed their color issues, not to mention all the other problems they created with that release. But they probably wont. I will pass on this, unless they actually have the OT remastered and in HD included.

Yeah, the color on ESB is noticeably "BRIGHTER" in weird ways. There's a bridge sequence (Could be the "Our first catch of the day" one) where the screen starts off very bright, and you can visible SEE as it switches palettes BEFORE the scene fade/wipe.

I'm afraid the Original Recipe is not in the game plan. Here's his response on that.

Sweet! Because...

...that about sums up my views.

And as for Uncle George's recalcitrance on releasing a fixed-up version of the Original Recipe....he'll come around. It'd cost a bunch, but he knows he could milk it. Maybe he'll save that for 3D, but it'll happen. And if he doesn't, fine by me. I'll just hang on to my DVD LD rips.

All the ones complaining about not having the originals and boycotting buying the set will not give Lucas a drop of sweat in worry. It will be one of the biggest selling Blu-Rays ever.

For each one boycotting there'll be hundreds buying. It's not going to exactly send a shockwave through Lucasfilm over the dispute. Never has before.

It's gonna happen. People are definitely gonna throw down the dough for this set.

I do admire Spielberg for answering to the purists of E.T. and offering both the 20th anniv. Special Edition as well as the original unaltered cut as a set even though later on he disagreed with the shotguns as an afterthought.

I don't think many of us are "boycotting" this new release anymore than we're "boycotting" not buying a fish sandwich if we don't like fish sandwiches, y'know? If you love it, buy it and enjoy it... I'm cool with that.

For many of us folks that aren't happy with the SEs for whatever reason though, it's just not what we want and not what we've been asking for so why spend the money on it (again).

It doesn't seem to me this is an issue Star Wars fans should really even be divided over in the slightest. Are there any fans of the SEs that are really willing to say that they don't want the original to be preserved? I doubt it... All the guys I've met would at least like to have a nice cleaned up copy for archival reasons even if they think the SEs are superior. You seemed to suggest as much in your admiration for Spielberg.

And the folks that either simply don't like or vehemently hate the SEs want to make sure the original movie isn't lost forever either...

So if we both want it, why do we bicker about it?

Granted, we vent about not getting the original version because we're mostly all die-hard fans here and we like to argue about stuff like this but ultimately it seems most of us want the same thing... some more or less than others but still the same thing.

Until then, like the other guys here said, I'll have to stick to my "bonus" DVD version. No point buying anything else for me. I don't care for the prequels myself... heck, I don't even like Return of the Jedi all that much so really, a non-SE version of the first movie is the only thing that will get my money at this point (and I'd pay $140 just for that alone - forget all the other movies and 30 hours of bonus features.)

I don't even care if the OT is cleaned up, all I care is that I can watch it correctly in 1080p. At least give us that!

I will probably get the OT, but not the prequels. Amazon has a really good pre-order price on both.

I'd still love to get a copy of Verta's re-mastered version.

Maybe they'll have 4 sets... 1 set being just the bonus discs, hehe.....

Amazon has the whole set on preorder for $89.99. I'm sure other sites/stores will be competitively priced eventually too.

This.

I think the fights boil down to lingering resentment among both camps about how the others respond to the preferred material...but at the end of the day, I don't think anyone would say "No!! Don't make a cleaned up version of the theatrical releases!!!"

Part of the resentment among the "boycotters" (who aren't boycotting as much as just saying "Meh. No thanks."), though, is that the fans of the SEs and continual tweakings and stuff pretty much ensure that Lucas WON'T do an "archival" version of the theatrical films unless he suddenly gets a bee in his bonnet to do so. why? Simple: he doesn't NEED to to make a buck. He knows that the SE fans will buy the versions he puts out, so those who want the archival thing either turn to illicit sources or buy the 2006 DVDs with "bonus" discs of the LD rips. Which many of them already HAD via ebay anyway....

I suspect that if fan-released "archival" rips get out there of the OT, Lucas will do what he did last time -- try to offer a "white market" version of them so as not to lose a buck. But outside of that, the only thing that'll change his mind is him waking up one day and saying "Hmm...well, why not?"

If someone came and put a bunch of CGI blue monkeys into the Wizard of Oz to make the scene "more terrifying" and made the Wicked Witch splash Dorothy with CGI water first (so as not to make her so cold-blooded), most would implode with outrage.

The SEs exist. Fine. Love them all you want, but stop the godforsaken apologizing. To deny the original version of the film ever existed is pure cinematic heresy. I'm not boycotting -- I'm just refusing to buy a revisionist piece of **** made by a man who lost his creative marbles sometime around 1982.

I don't understand why everyone is buying these when spike airs the entire trilogy (the PT never happened in my opinion) in HD every holiday season. Just DVR it.

Granted the spike versions have a watermark and are, as I was told, not true 1080p

I believe they showed it in 1080p HD in Germany with 5.1 sound (no watermark - nothing).

Either way, it's been shown to death already.. and it was free.

Seriously, unless these versions offer something different, I don't see any reason for getting them.

You know if you are REALLY looking for the best resolution to watch Star Wars (there is no "A New Hope" to me).

Buy a 16mm or 35 mm film print. They are 1000% better than even 1080p.

So put your money where your mouth is.

None of this 'arguing' has truley answered the question as to why GL continues to deny what fans really want.

The SE editions seem to be universally (at best) disliked, or (at worst) hated!

If you took a poll and asked fro a preference my guess is the overwhelming result would be in favour of the originals 'as they were'.

From a tech point of view, i am confused by GL saying that to produce the originals in HD would be too costly and require massive cleanup. Hasnt this 'clean up' already taken place in order to produce the SE's ????

Doesnt all the original footage reside cleaned up somewhere in a computer somewhere already????

The simply truth is, GL prefers the SE editions. They are his visions of how the films should truly be, and it seems that either no one can convince him otherwise, or (more likely) not one in his close circle has the guts to speak their mind.

I wont be buying a BR version of star wars simply because I can not watch them in SE version.

I meant in terms of content, no changes, no new shots or fixes. What was different about the DVD version?
There were a few changes to the Han and Greedo scene. The CGI Jabba was replaced with a version that looked more like the ep1 version than the '97 version they did. Some color corrections on the lightsabers, but still ****ed them up a bit. Minor things.

I know of one restored Star Wars I'd love to see and it ain't that Adywan crap or any of those other fan-attempts.

Spielberg offers both versions of ET and multiple versions of Close Encounters. Ridley Scott offers multiple versions of Alien and Blade Runner. Many, many, MANY, if not ALL directors and companies offer both the original versions and the remastered versions. Only one not doing so is George Lucas. That speaks volumes.

Personally I think the SE's are crap. Not so much because of the additions, but because it looks like a amateurish job and because the CGI effects stand out against the traditional effects. They do not compliment each other and you can clearly distinguish them and they jar up against each other and takes you out of the experience, because no real effort was done to blend the new stuff in better with the old.

Hell, George Lucas can play with his SE versions all he wants, but he'll never get what he really wants until he replaces all the old effects with new CGI to match it to the PT. That's what's so sad about this is that he's trapped in what he wants no matter what he attempts, as he'll never accomplish it unless he redoes the SFX completely. Hell... I really think he should do that, but that takes away from the artisans and skilled crew who made the originals back in the day, so Lucas can tinker here and tinker there, but never be satisfied anyway. To really honor the work of the people who worked on these movies back then he should restore the original versions for posterity - the people working on the movies deserve that, if nothing else. Then he can go in and change everything he wants on his new and improved versions with a clear conscience instead of the hack-job he has to settle with that will never satisfy him anyway.
