Star Trek XI Phaser

Just pulled the masking tape off my Playmates phaser this afternoon and snapped a few shots. This baby's been drying since Thanksgiving! I'm really happy with the finish, but I hope the paint job lasts - the chrome paint has already scratched and scuffed a bit from just some gentle handling. I had originally planned to paint the nozzle opaque red, but I'm getting impatient so it's staying as it is.

Does look a lot better then the normal PM paint job. What paint are you using? i'd suggest car paint or perhaps a coating of a clear plastic hardener. But i'd leave some scuffs, it makes the prop look used.

I hit mine with some translucent smoke paint over the original finish to give it a slightly more matte and dirtied up look. I also coated the emitter with silver and clear red to give it the anodized look of the real thing.

Just wish QMx would put out a proper all-metal version out there...

After a lot of testing of off the shelf chromes I settled on Rust-oleum chrome. There's definitely a trade off though - if I hold it just a little while it feels a little tacky.

Joatrash I like the look of yours. I may have to go back and hit mine with a little red paint on the emitter after all. What brand of red did you use?

Ok so i haven't bought any of the 09 PM toys because i just thought they looked to..Well toyish, but this looks good..I'm going to buy one of those phasers, to try this painting method out. I'd like to know what paints is being used to. Transclusent red?? thats a new one on me. It looks really good.

If you hit up a game shop that sells the game Warhammer you can usualy find a good selection of transclusent paints. Alot of the model painters pefer to use a metalic undercoat and then go over with a translucent top coat.

Nah, Games Workshop does not have any translucent paints in the Citadel range. You can however, mix your own with a clear coat and a couple drops of their inks/washes. The washes themselves are pretty thin.. I would want to blend them into a slightly heavier medium for application on a smooth surface or it will just run away or form droplets.

I you want something water-soluble, Tamiya makes a selection of translucent tones. (Pretty sure I used the one called "smoke" on my phaser... unless I mixed it myself.)

The phaser looks really Good. Found this site with some good pics of screen used prop for anyone wanting to accurize their phaser even more. Also has good shot of many other props.
