Star Trek XI – USS Kelvin Starfleet Uniforms Reference Photos?

Actually they all have those shoulder rings, in the Maru simulation. You can see most clearly when McCoy turns around.

Actually it reminds me of the "Future" Starfleet uniform seen in "All Good Things", "The Visitor" and "Endgame"...

...a lot.

Great catch :eek - I thought I had seen a similar design somewhere before but dismissed it as deja vu...

Good call.

And appropriate considering it's an 'alternate timeline'.

But it isn't an alternate timeline until after the incident on the Kelvin. Nero's arrival creates the alternate timeline.

I too liked the Kelvin uniforms. They were my favorite in the new movie. I remember breaking them down as I watched, but I can't recall most of the details now. I should bring a pen and paper to take notes.

Nero's act of time travel didn't 'create' the parallel reality. He simply 'arrived' there when his ship exited the wormhole. The parallel reality existed prior to his arrival. Writer Bob Orci has stated this on TrekMovie.com.

What? That's just stupid if that's the case. I prefer the idea of altering the existing universe. To say "we're going to tiptoe here and just create an entirely different, alternate reality so we don't upset anyone by essentially erasing the entire timeline they're familiar with" is retarded. I think you misread that, or I hope so, because that's just dumb. That would officially move the new Trek from "best relaunch ever," to "worst load of placating garbage ever put onscreen."

Maybe I did read it wrong. Here's how I understand it:

Orci tried to explain that his version of time travel isn't 'linear', in the sense that you can travel back and forward in one timeline. According to the science he's read this is theoretically invalid, and has been supplanted by a "multiverse" of timelines.

Consider the 'grandfather paradox' -- you go back in time and kill your granddad. So, how were you born to go back in time and kill him? In a linear timeline this is a problem. But in a multiverse you basically enter into a similar, yet parallel reality, making this possible.

Though no 'direct action' did Nero change the existing timeline, other than by the very act of time travel. Like with the Enterprise-C showed up in "Yesterday's Enterprise". Boom, stuff is different.

Orci is a moron who wants it both ways. He's been bashed by a lot of people (including a recent event at the WGA) for sloppy storytelling.

Spock goes into a speech in the movie about how Nero's arrival changed the destinies of everyone and created an alternate timeline - CREATED an alternate timeline. The fact (if it is) that he is now stepping on his own script is just ridiculous.

I don't think anyone can make a decent attempt until we get some better reference pics. I still haven't found any new ones...:unsure

Kaplan's inspiration for the Kelvin uniform supposedly came from 1950s sci-fi movies. If the TOS look was created in the 1960s, and the Kelvin was to look like it was a generation earlier than TOS, then...

It makes sense to me, and I'll credit Kaplan for actually putting some thought into it, unlike much of the rest of the movie's wardrobe other than the Enterprise uniforms.

Aren't there already enough threads in the OT to complain about the script in? Do we really have to drag it in here too?

True - sorry.

As for the Kelvin costumes - I just figured it was a way to bridge the jumpsuits from Enterprise into TOS.

And you can see the inspiration of 50's design - look at Forbidden Planet.

There's a picture book available in Japan with great ref pics of all the costumes. I'll be in Tokyo from July till end of Aug and I see what I can find.

One question- why is the captain in BLUE?

ENT command = gold. TOS command = gold.

Also, the style of the Kelvin bears little resemblance to any TOS ships, in fact it looks more in line with the JJ-prise.

Seems they were thinking "parallel" reality originally, and now they're backpedaling and claiming it WAS the original timeline. Sloppy.
Liked the movie in spite of it all though.
AND- I want a Kelvin uniform too!

Ah, but the ENT uniform was almost "all blue", yes? Just a bit of division color around the shoulders. Mostly blue, I would say. ;)

Well, the Kelvin uniform, color-wise, were all over the place... Light blue, grey, copper, green... And I would have loved a more... Cage-esque uniform (re-designed, but still...;))

I think I will design MY version of the Pre-TOS uniforms and TOS uniforms soon...:love
