Incase anyone was ever curious as to why these season sets are being released at such a high pace for the amount of work that gets put into them, CBS is actually outsourcing the work load to other visual effects and editing companies. CBS Digital (CBS-D) is handling the odd numbered seasons while a different house will be doing the even numbered seasons. After CBS-D got TNG off to a fantastic start with their work on the Season One BluRay release, HTV Illuminate was tasked for handling Season 2. The quality of HTV's work was a bit underwhelming compared to CBS-D's work. There was evidence of digital noise reduction that eliminated some of the grain from the live action shots, some of the film effect shots were warped resulting in the Enterprise D looking fat, the planets were handled by a different artists resulting in a less than impressive planet that looks no better than it did in SD, the new effect shots that had to be recreated digitally had no artificial grain added to keep the quality consistent and they used the wrong film effects shots.
Take for instance the shot of the Enterprise D launching a probe from it's photon torpedo launcher. This was originally done as a matte painting of the Enterprise with a tiny, barely visible probe coming out of the launcher and have a little tiny fire effect emit from it's engine as it passes by the camera. Since the matte painting couldn't be located, HTV had to recreate the Enterprise D digitally as well as the probe. It was probably the worst looking effect on the season 2 set.
When it came time for the same effect shot to be used again in Season 3, CBS-D decided to recreate the effect shot from scratch rather than use any of HTV's work. The result is a far better effect than what HTV presented us and it clearly shows the attention to detail that CBS-D has towards TNG.
TNG Probe Launch Remastered Comparison
Differences:
- Grain has been applied to the shot to keep the quality consistent with the live action shots and other film stock effects.
- The camera has been placed at a slightly lower angle so the blue warp nacelle doesn't conflict with the probe effect.
- The coloring of the Enterprise's hull is a lot more metallic rather than the bright blue plastic look from HTV.
- There's an added lighting effect to the probe's engine so the effect is reflected off the hull of the Enterprise.
- The structure of the Enterprise's hull is a lot more sharp looking compared to the soft and smooth look of HTV's Enterprise.
