Star Trek Nemesis Shinzon's "Stained" Knife

Hello all,
I bought a cheap replica of the large knife used by Shinzon in the film ST Nemesis, same one that appears in his raised fist on the poster!
It is not a great knife and I did not pay allot for it but it has inaccuracies!
One of these I can not fix, the blade forms two tines which are of center!
The handle should be black and I have Rustolium paints so that is a quick fix.
The problem I need help with is the blade which should be stains of varying browns! I tried to use a little gun bluing to stain it but it did not mark the finish.
The blade is marked stainless steel so is it even possible to tarnish the finish?
Any help on what I can use to get the desired affect would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not saying that it will work, but you could try heating the blade and then quickly cooling it off.. that has always produced fun and interesting colors for me.

I had a sword that was the wrong shape so I tried to correct it. Didn't work out the way I had hoped as I managed to get the right shape but could not clean it correctly. But your post reminded me that the sword did get some cool colors and I think it's worth a shot.
