Star Trek IV Klingon comm scratch build

I am currently building a Klingon comm and could use some help identifying the greeblies, I know about the electric razor head; but the others????

You can see pics on Rich Coyle's site-

http://www.racprops.com/trekmovies/tvh/

Now, my guess is that the others are from some sort of armor kit, possibly a tank?

Here's what I have thus far-

Any help you guys could give would be much appreciated! :thumbsup

*EDIT* Thanks go out to the members below for offering some great ideas on greeblie identification. I've now completed the body and am awaiting greeblies.

If I remember right, the circular button on the top/face of the thing is a blade screen from a Remington electric shaver.

Re: Star Trek IV Klingon comm greeblie identification?

The two boxes on the middle top and the triangular parts on either side at the bottom are from the Tamiya 222 German Armored Car.

That does look like a German armored car...good eye!

Re: Star Trek IV Klingon comm greeblie identification?

I applaud you taking on your own project.

Dial is a Norelco. I offered them here years ago. The rounded triangular thingies towards the bottom corners are off a 3 barrel helicopter cannon - the tips of the rotating barrel as i recall.

I've made so many of these. Dop me a PM. I drew line art(plans) from a casting that I bought at the 20th aniversary Trek convention. The plans are old but accurate to sizing.

This isn't the exact cannon but I'm posting the pic so you know what part to look for. Even in this pic you can see a similarity/resembalance.

Some custom Klingon comms I did years ago. I used proportions based on the original comm.

Picture outright stolen from jhusel.

I made it modular so there was the potential to make 4 versions by rearranging the componants. Hollow for electronics and battery.

This dog has nothing to do with the post but I like the picture.

ha! those are great pics, the dog made me laugh out loud!. I have a Coyle klingon comm laying bout the house somewhere.

Re: Star Trek IV Klingon comm greeblie identification?

The little boxes AND the rounded triangular things are (almost certainly) from Tamiya's 1/35 Sd. Kfz. 222, a WWII German armored car kit.

The triangular things are the 'hubcaps' facing wrong side out.

I love that little kit, and I love being able to ID a part. It's so rare a pleasure.

The kit has been reissued (2007-ish), so it should be out there. About $25.

I just went through one of my boxed ones and double-checked. Seems to be a damn close match. If not the Tamiya kit, then it must be another 222. Tamiya seems the most likely, as they are a large company.

Good luck :)

Coyle once told me those pieces came off a helicopter model, but he couldn't remember which one.

Nice! I especially like the modular idea!

I've got most of it done, awaiting greeblies.

Here is am image I found on the interwebs doing a google search. The image at the top is as it originally appears and void of my quaint little markings so you can see it more clearly.

In image "A" I have outlined the shape of that little tab thingy at the bottom. You will see the tab extends strait out. This is incorrect to ST3. The tab should be at an angle as seen in "B". The point of making the tab strait as seen in "A" was so it could be made more easily in an open face mold and save time. Aside from the inaccurate angle that results from this method there is also the loss of 2 square(ish) detail parts that should be on the backside of the tab. The blue stripe thing on this tab is just a strip of styrene.

The tans strips in the middle should wrap all the way around. I have seen a few castings and pics of actual props and as I understand the same basic shape was used and the the stripey detail bits were added after they bodies were all cast so they did not all have the same surface detail that we see on the one held up to Saavik to talk into. Some were really void of a lot of detail.

If you have a casting of one of these one way to see how much your copy has shrunk and/or been recast is to measure the diameter of the Norelco rotohead. Speaking of the rotohead...remember the Norelco shaver used in A View to a Kill by Patrick MacNee that doubled as a detector for eavedropping devices? That shaver used the correct sized rotohead.

I have old 35mm pics of a 1st generation casting. I'll have to see if I can find them.

Now see, that is what I really screwed the pooch on was the tab at the bottom of the thing, I guess I'll have to hack it down now - :lol Thanks for the side pic SLK. :)

Weazel1 and Sith Sheriff Brody were right, about 60 % of the greeblies come from a Tamiya 1/35 Sd. Kfz. 222. I lucked out and got a vintage one for pretty cheap.

Here is my progress so far:

Still trying to identify the hemisphere between the blades.

Hmm... That dome is probably just a Plastruct hemisphere. The kind of thing any propmaker would have handy.
