Star Trek Into Darkness (Post-release)

Sure, why not? They seem to give out commissions to Starships for setting the table well, doing the dishes and cleaning the cat box. In fact, make ALL the characters have been 'rewarded' with commissions for things. Troi's is clearly for wearing such a hot skirt.

I'm kind of disappointed that no one got that.

I got it! Just sort of went off track after thinking about it. On the one hand, in the 23rd century one would simply beam cat poo into space, on the other hand cleaning the cat box could be a reference to Kirk and his two young lady friends from the beginning of the film.

No one has commented on the JJ Enterprise D either!

It was absolutely a reference to the two feline ladies Kirk had in bed at the beginning.

You mean the Enterprise DD?
I have seen at least one picture where someone is making a model of it by taking a TOS version and using a pair of hair driers for the warp nacelles.

Not to resurrect an almost pulseless thread, but this just had to be shared. The STID part comes in at 21:25.

Having just seen it (just released here in Japan)... I have to say I loved it... Not classic Trek by any margin, but that was never in debate. The new movies aren't those....And I am more than happy to watch both and enjoy both for different reasons..

The homages thrown into Into Darkness were cool, and added a fair bit to the movie, and the movie itself matches what I'd expect in the 21st century....A new vision, and a different take on it, but interesting and fun, and emotional for that...Even more so since the connections to the older movies are fun to catch and spot too....

I bloody loved it......No, it wasn't the classical Star Trek....But it was a great movie, and although I'm still annoyed I had to wait 5 months until I could comment on it, I am very happy to have seen it....

Very good movie in my opinion.....

You know, I'm kinda sick of the "Oh, go buy the comic! It explains all the plot holes in the film" thing.

I get that, I just like to have the comic for fun. Especially printed ones to take along on a trip if I want to get more trek.

Remember how Nero needed not one, but TWO WHOLE SEPARATE COMIC RUNS (Star Trek Countdown, Star Trek Nero) just to understand out what the heck was going on with his character?

But I'm glad STID cemented the fact that this is a totally different reality from the Prime Universe in that things were much different even before the Narada screwed things up.

I thought it was abundantly clear in the first JJ Trek that it wasn't the Prime Universe to begin with. The problem is, according to the story it was supposed to be the Prime Universe and events were altered by Nero's incursion. Yeah right...it reminds me of a line from The Outlaw Josey Wales, "Don't **** down my back and try to tell me its raining."

Update for censored word - Just insert pee pee where you see ****. :lol

How is that "the problem?" That's kinda the definition of alternate universe...

I think he means it's a problem because it's not clear whether this is a rebooted Prime Universe, or whether this is an alternate universe, or what. Like, did the Prime Universe get erased because of the time travel, or does it still exist and the JJ-verse is something different?

I mean, functionally, I think this only really matters if you harbor some hope that the "Prime" universe will return in a way that ignores or sidesteps the JJ-verse. And I don't see that happening any time soon. For that matter, even if they say that's the case now, you can always make the argument later (and someone will, if they decide to return to the "prime" universe and ignore JJ years from now) that the JJ-verse was always an alternate reality.

Because it was supposed to be the Prime Universe to start off with in the beginning of Trek 09. If they had come right out and said "This universe has no connection to the Trek you have known all these years" I would have been fine with that but they decided to pee on us and tell us it was rain dammit!

It was just a lazy and insulting way to hit the reset button. No big deal I just prefer honesty over total BS. :lol

Well, now you're contradicting yourself:

So, was it, or was it not clear at the beginning that it was supposed to be an alternate universe?

Let's be clear about what the films show though. The beginning of the film in ST09 is the point where Nero intrudes and, to borrow Doc Brown's language, skews off into an alternate Trek universe. Although this isn't necessarily made immediately clear by the film, this ambiguity is in service to the story.

The film does make it abundantly clear that it is an alternate universe. They use it in dialogue. Young Spock has that line about "whatever our lives might have been....."

That's not peeing on your leg and telling you it's raining, that's bashing you over the head with "THIS IS AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE!!!!!"

I never watched the oldies but I thought it was quite clear. Thing is. For someone who has watched the older films. Its as easy as 2 and 2 to work out . Films dont have a lot of time to explain things that are pretty obvious.... they have to concentrate on the story. And if u haven't watched the old ones and dont get it even though its explained. . then why would you care if it was alternate. As you never knew the original one.
