Why? It's just 7 years between TNG episode 2x22 and DS9 episode 5x10 and they had four different uniform designs.

With that in mind, I'm fine if the uniforms are different to TOS, as long as they show some kind of plausible progression. The TNG era had many different uniforms, but you could see how one progressed into the next. As has been pointed out, The Cage / WNMHGB had different uniforms, so there's already justification for them not using the TOS uniforms, but I do hope they at least follow a similar style of the dark pants with a predominantly single coloured shirt (using TOS colour coding preferably). There's plenty of room there to create a design that's familiar but fresh.

This thing is starting to sound like a train wreck waiting to happen but I'm hoping it isn't. If it's on the CBS pay service only they're not going to get many buyers, it's stupid to have new costume designs with only 10 years to go before Kirk, and Whoopie being back is a deal breaker for me as i can't stand her.

I LIKED whoopie... before she got on that stupid talk show where everyone is dis likeable....

whoopie the actor is fine with me though.

But yeah, as far as this thing goes, i'm not holding out hope. big companies don't seem to know what to DO with their older tent pole franchises and make them WORK.
there are just too many people handing out too many bad ideas, and no one creative gene roddenberry type around to try and guide and mold them, and with the cahojnes to say 'that's not a good idea'...

either way, i'm not paying for this thing on cbs all access. I'll check out the pilot..but that's it..

... (using TOS colour coding preferably). ...

No worries, changing the TOS color coding wouldn't make sense, since Archer and Kirk are using the same coding and the new series is set in between.

By the way: I love Guinan. One of my favorite Trek characters. I would love to see her again in a new Star Trek series.

I prefer they stick with a military model as TOS did. That ship had a professional dedicated crew, everyone was getting regular drills on critical ship functions, not civilian staff with a barkeep giving sage advice, I realize they could go a different angle with her but it's still a bad idea. TNG had kids on board, family, it was a different animal by then. This is before TOS.
They need to stress the pioneer aspect. I don't want the crew to have the help of the magical wizard woman sage. You're in space, it's up to the crew
to bail themselves out of problems. Introducing that character will give the writers a lazy way to solve things. I saw plenty of her
flicks back in the day, she got my money, but keep her away from Trek.

A different uniform would only work if this new series is set either 10 years before Kirk joins Starfleet or 10 years before he's born because 10 years before he takes command of the Enterprise makes for an unrealistically small timeframe for a new uniform to be adopted and eventually replaced given that the second pilot takes place around 10 years after "The Cage" and the uniforms are still pretty much the same as then. I suppose that one plausible explanation is that the Discovery crew get issued a new uniform to test wear but does not end up getting adopted, that would be the only way it would make sense it the new series is set 10 years before Kirk gets the Enterprise.

Even at that they'd have to mention it somewhere that they're testing the uniforms so that it makes sense or maybe have them wear them awhile and go to the TOS uniforms later on. It's just stuff like this that makes you wonder how out of touch the people running the franchise is from not just the fans but the canon of the shows.

That too. The character is a next gen character, why not toss in Q while they are at it? I suppose you could have her hanging on some space station with Cyrano Jones or something.
I really think they should minimize any "special guest stars".

I really liked Guinan and her mysteriousness. Q however shouldn't make an appearance since, wasn't his appearance in Encounter at Farpoint supposed to be his first encounter with our species?? :confused

That Q, yes.

Quinn, the Q from Voyager, mentioned influencing a lot of famous historical humans.

If one subscribes to Trelane as a baby Q, that may color one's opinion on such an appearance. Though perhaps omnipotent pesky antagonistic god like beings have been done enough.

Most cameos will a small part feel contrived, and a BIG part feel like they should have just put it after Nemesis where they could have all the cameos they want and it would've felt perfectly natural.

It could be that it was his first encounter on his timeline, but he may have gone back in time after,

How about a uniform that looks like Pajamas with a big Medical sensor at the waist? What? No? Whoopee was a guest judge on Roast Battle, and she related that one of the comedians made her laugh and "Pee a Little". She affirmed that since she's older her bladder control isn't the best. Guinan is over 700 years old IIRC. I can now never see Guinan without that in mind.
"Data, can you take over for a minute? I need to go change"
"Change what Guina....Strange my olfactory sensors are detecting a considerable amount of Uric Acid close by."
"Just SHUT UP and run the damn bar for a minute."

So apparently they're thinking of using Majel's voice as the computers, they recorded it before she died so that it can be used for GPS and cell phones but they could use it in the show too.

The problem with that is that they're limited to things that are recorded. I'd rather they get someone else to do a similar voice so that they're free to have the computer say anything. I'd like them to get Marina Sirtis, like they did for Star Trek Continues.
