Star Trek Beyond (Post-release)

Marvel flicks are the only ones left that actually feel like movies with some teeth to them.

how dare you include them in that bunch ;o)

I thought it started out with some depth, with the voice over, and Kirk feeling a little bit "episodic" which I thought was a nice touch. But once the attack happened and the ship was destroyed the film just lost it's focus entirely and any opportunity for depth, for character development, or to unleash Idris Elba as a performer, were completely wasted.

I mean, this is a movie with loads of talent, and you give them a scene with a dirtbike and wierd CGI brown goo? That's it? It was just odd. Just odd choices overall. But I have to admit when I found out Justin Lin was directing this, and then I saw the bikes in the trailer, I knew this wasn't going to be a film I enjoyed.

At first I was thinking "Great, the ship is gone, now we're going to see what kind of survival training the federation offers" But, nope, they just found another ship. What the heck was the point of that? Lets take away thier tech . . . for a few minutes . . . then we'll just give them back tech. No survivalist training on strange planets needed.

If you're going to do some retro throwback federation stuff, at least have some nods to the TOS in there, right? Nope.

And they need to lose the wierd little dwarf alien that follows Scotty around. It's just wierd. Very, very wierd.

I was also in the "It may as well be earth" camp when it comes to the giant space station. I liked the concept of the station having gravity in all kinds of directions, but outside of that idea it was just a place to put in jeopardy for the sake of putting it in jeopardy. It didn't need to be in the movie.

Stuff I enjoyed. The new costumes were good. They reminded me a bit of the show Enterprise.

The action and stunt work was all well done. The film was shot well, and had some great sound editing. Yes, I look for that stuff. :)

that's the problem with all these sequels and reboots.

thanks to china and other foreiegn translations,

movies have no depth anymore.

they have to be boring and simple in order to translate well.

china has sucked the fun out of movies.

It was just poorly written. We were supposed to care about all these random characters, but why? I never had any idea. The intro and first Captain's log were fun and enjoyable. And then it just turned into chaos. And not in an awesome Mad Max way, but in a "what the hell is going on?" way.

Then a new baddie like 15 minutes from the end? What? And we care because?! Not to spoil it for anyone, but based on the casting, and on Cumberbatch in the last hot mess of a movie, I think the Trek people believe they can just take whatever the internet thinks was cool last week and slap it onscreen and their sh!tty movie will suddenly have some sort of cachet. I fully expect the next movie's villains to be bacon and Bernie Sanders.

EDIT: The whole nanobots thing needs to die. It sucked in GI Joe, it sucked in Genysisysssys, it sucks here. So hard.

it was pretty cool in the original TMNT series, before nanobots as a plot was a thing. and there they where called micro bots :)

I will give the TMNT cartoon a pass because it's actually enjoyable :lol Of course, I conflated nanobots with the swarm ship thingys, but who cares? Same basic animation of a giant cloud of implausible bad guy.

I was talking about this to my wife and she said that it was a pretty offensive mentality. The idea that these movies are big and dumb so they can cross a language barrier. She's right. I can watch a foreign film and "get it" with no problem. Hell. Infernal affair is Chinese and it's amazing.

Anyway, I realized that these movies are big and dumb because Hollywood execs think they have to be in order to have broad appeal. Not because people can't handle it.

People are smart. Hollywood is dumb.

Bingo..

hell, Just look at Dragonball Z and the latest Trunks Arc.

Dealing with time travel, alternate universes, trying to keep track at least FOUR Alternate Universes( assuming i'm smart enough to follow it properly ;o). ), and i enjoy listening to the original voice actors who are as much a part of my child hood as their american counterparts. Hearing the original Japanese Freiza still gives me chills whenever he comes back ;o).

It's a case of Hollywood thinking they have to dumb it down for some reason, because foreign audiences aren't smart enough to understand our American 'brilliance'.
Or just being too lazy to translate it properly. or just thinking people LIKE dumbed down entertainment. OR this is the best they can come up with cause they are the dumb ones ;o). take your pick

just another case of how out of touch hollywood is in their 80 degree constant weather ;o)

Yeah, of my top five favorite films, two are subtitled. Doesn't impact my ability to appreciate them one bit. I'm sure the Chinese can navigate a subtitled action film that has a modicum of substance to it. No doubt the ratio of reasonably intelligent to dense Chinese people is about the same as it is in the US...but Hollywood rarely trusts audiences anywhere it seems.

This.

It's also not unique to Asian markets. Whenever they try to target any demographic the go-to method seems to be "make it stupid < insert demographic> loves stupid."

Meanwhile the truth is, everyone likes good movies.
Das Boot is in my top ten

"House of Flying Daggers", "Hero", and "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" are way up there for me, too, and all three of those are both Chinese and intelligent.
I'd wager that the majority of Chinese are smarter than the majority of Americans, anyway, what with the differences in our education systems.
Who's the Hollywood genius who thinks movies have to be dumb for the Chinese? Wait - is it Michael Bay?

Probably the same person that thinks they have to remake a popular UK TV show and change the actors/setting/premise before a US audience can understand it.
But Americans NEED a laugh track. How else will they know when to laugh?

;)

I actually kind of enjoyed this one. I won't say I particularly liked it, but I enjoyed it more than the first two.
