Star Trek Beyond (Post-release)

I wonder if it was an intentional Trekkie easter egg that the new 1701-A was constructed on Starbase Yorktown and that the 1701-A in Voyage Home was supposed to be the re-designated USS Yorktown?

Loved the movie. Lots of cool Trek references such as mentioning the MACO and the Xindi attack on Earth.

so, does anyone know which series or movie that alert siren was from when the swarm attacked york town?

I 'm pretty sure it was a star trek alert sound, but not a nu trek sound, and it's been bugging me the moment i heard it.

You have to remember though, this is the same Starfleet that lets XOs turn down promotions to Captain and their own ship thus denying somebody else their shot at being the XO of a ship. It also allows Captains to refuse promotions to Admiral and keep their ship and thus preventing someone other deserving officer their shot at commanding a starship,m not only that, it also completely gums up the works where promotions are concerned because fewer billets are opening up because of XOs and Captains not moving on. A Captain that doesn't take a promotion to Admiral means that there's an XO not getting a command, and in turn this means that another officer isn't getting their shot at XO, which means that someone isn't getting promoted and taking over the would be XO's current job ,and so on.

Eh, they'll just build another ship for those folks. It'll be fine.

(Said in jest, but in the Federation, the idea of scarcity doesn't seem to be a thing, or shouldn't be. You can replicate pretty much any material you need, and there's no reason that starship construction couldn't be handled by automation. So the only limiting factors would be trained crews, needs of the Federation/Starfleet, and any treaty limitations that may be in effect.)

You know, I was thinking the same thing when I wrote my previous post, when things look like or are starting to bogged down they'll just build a new starship for all those people they want to promote but can't because someone (or several someones) is refusing their promotion. Hell, they could probably crew an entire starship with the people from the Enterprise D/E alone, none of the senior staff ever leave that ship to take more senior positions on other ships or on starbases, serving as staff officers, or even going to the Starfleet equivalent of general staff colleges and the like. It's got to be frustrating for all the mid-level officers knowing that there is no shot at senior positions like Chief Engineer, head of security, 3rd officer as longs as the people currently in those billets are alive since they all want to stay on the Enterprise for the entire length of their careers.

Production budget was $185M, it already opened what looks like widely internationally,
how much hang time it has will be critical I think....

Jason Borne and Bad Moms opens this week... so the passive watcher will be seeing those. And Suicide Squad opens the week after.

I've just decided to ignore Nu Trek altogether, as someone said in a review the movies are entertaining but I like more Star Trek in my Star Trek. Here's hoping Discovery puts some meat back on the bone.

Saw it today.

Wow. You really can make a good film when it's not written by an angry, infantile, conspiracy nut prima donna. Kicking Roberto Orci off the director's and writer's chair is the best thing to happen to this NuTrek universe. The characters feel more sincere and grounded. Out is the ignorant pre-concieved idea of what the general audience thinks that these characters are like and in are what these characters SHOULD actually be like. I wasn't annoyed with Kirk at all in the film, Spock was able to let loose a bit without making it a big deal, McCoy was really fun to watch, ect. I even liked some of the call backs. One thing this movie was able to do that none of the previous films did was crack a genuine laugh that I didn't feel bad about, and of all things it's a TMP reference when McCoy points at Spock yelling "This was 'your' idea!"

Definitely caught the red alert klaxon from the DS9/Voyager era and even appreciated the return of technobabble in figuring out how to destroy the swarm. The use of Sabotage song is still ridiculously stupid, but the technobabble part before it plays at least gave it a Star Trek vibe.

There are still some downsides that, despite this film being good, still hasn't won me over to this NuTrek universe. ALL of the escape pods were called Kelvin Pods, Torpedoes are now literally missiles instead of glowing orb projectiles (They used it for Trek09 for god's sake! Why the change now?!), Kirk being uncertain about his role as Captain felt like it was aborted (What motivated him to remain as Captain? Because things got fun all of a sudden?), all of the ENTERPRISE references, the absent Carol Marcus, another villain that's bent on destroying the Federation, the somehow worse looking design of the Enterprise A, ect. I'll probably delve into more as the posts pile up, but I'll leave with giving the film one final bit of props.

Kirk's mother is referenced. Thank you.

Photon torpedoes have always been essentially missiles, this was first shown in ST II and again in ST VI and is even shown in the TNG era tech manual and I think in the ST Encyclopedia as well, both officially licensed products. Presumably they only glow and look like orbs when there's an armed warhead inside of it, possibly the anti-matter glowing inside of its magnetic containment field or something.

Yeah, I know. They start out of a Photon Tube and exit as a big ball of light. Here, the only glowing part comes from the exhaust while the rest of it is essentially not glowing at all. .

You know, I think the whole "sabotage" thing wouldn't have been as annoying if they used something for the 30's. Or even some old opera aria.

But using the beastie boys feels like there is some executive at Paramount who INSISTED on it. Like, he was a huge fan and won't let it go.

Wow, I thought only SW threads had this level of complaining. I saw this today and thought it was great, but then again I never liked Star Trek until the 2009 film so clearly I'm not a "purist" like most here. Not the best thing I've ever seen, but it's an entertaining and fun summer movie which is all I was looking for.

How long til we get a side-by-side of the Enterprises? TBH, I couldn't really tell the difference between the 1701 and the 1701-A.

One thing a friend of mine brought up today....why are their no shields on the enterprise?

Let me put it this way. There were 5 tv series and a bunch of movies for star trek. They all fit into the same continuity and fit together in style and concept.

This movie series way more contentious in it's ' concept than the prequel series ever was.

Give yourself a treat and watch the first couple of seasons of the original trek. That's what I did. I really liked the 2009 trek, so I picked up the old show on DVD. As I continued to watch it I grew angrier and angrier at JJ Abrams, orci and kurtzman

I really do not get all the JJ Trek bashing. If you did not have NuTrek currently, you would all be whining about not having it rather then appreciation what we have. Is it perfect for the die hard fan? - No, it could be better in some places. Do I take issue with some things sure, but I am also adult and intelligent enough to realize these movies are made to make money, not for the fans. The films are specifically made to appeal to a broad audience in order for Paramount to make money. Action, adventure and explosions makes money and the box office keeps proving that to the Paramount executives. JJ Trek 2009 earned some of the most positive reviews in the history of the franchise, and its $257 million

I know the original series and grew up loving every moment of it, and not ever episode is great. Such as
“Turnabout Intruder” or “The Way to Eden” Same goes for TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise. I am happy this universe is still around finding new fans. Because my fear is if Paramount only relied on the nit picking, never happy Star Trek die hard fan the franchise would be dead.

I think it is very easy to sit back a critique the work of others, especially is the anonymity of today's social media. To quote Captain Pike "I challenge you to do better"! Lets see you pen a story or screen play and put it out there. Lets have you argue and get it past the executives at Paramount so we can all rip your work apart thinking we could all do better.

I'd rather have nothing than get something that tries to make it so dumbed down for the general audience that isn't into sci fi stuff....that it might as well be called something else. Even Galaxy Quest has more heart than JJ trek does at times.

We have 50 years of stuff. that's more than enough for a life time.
if that was it, I'd be happy with that.

And a 69% or so drop off on it's first week? seems the nu audience gets tired of it faster than we did.
