Star Trek Beyond Franklin Phase Pistol

Hello All,

This is my first post here. I've been visiting this site for years, mainly to observe. I've loved props for as long as I can remember. The first thing I ever built was a poor attempt at the Blade Runner gun way back in '82. I created it from an old cap gun, balsa wood, and some old model parts I had lying around. (I wish I still had the gun.) I was 16 at the time. That was it; I had the bug. After that, I've built other things over the years—some scratch builds and a few kits, mainly Sci-Fi and primarily guns.

That brings me to the reason for this post. I spotted the ST Beyond Frankin phase pistol and knew I had to add it to my ever-growing collection. I could have downloaded a model from the internet, but where's the fun in that! So I decided to model the gun in Fusion 360 and 3D print a copy for myself. By the way, I had to teach myself 360. I got the printer last year as a Christmas gift. That’s something else I still need to work out.

I just finished the gun, which I modeled on John Eaves' original concept art and every screen grab I could find. Now that the model is complete, I'm not sure what slicer to use. (I use a Mac.) I'm also looking for any advice or a useful link to get started with the printing process. Here are images of the inspiration as well as the finished gun model. I would love some feedback. Thanks!

The smaller more detail parts would be best using a resin type printer. The larger pieces would work in a fdm type printer.
But all the pieces would best be printed on a resin type printer.
Sorry, but i'm not sure on what slicer works with a mac.

Hi, JHusel directed me to this post. I came across your posts on Facebook, I had no idea that this could be Vincent's work ? Is this you ? Remember I expressed an interest in your modeling on this . This is looking so great, can't wait to see prints !!

Yes, I want to make the files available. I've decided the first fifty requests will be given a copy of the print files for free. I'm going to post that on FB shortly. As this is all new to me, I am still on a learning curve and figuring out how to turn this into printable files. I just watched a tutorial on it. I hope to get that done today. IM me the request on FB so we can chat offline from this.

Thanks! I was thinking of sending this to Shapeways or Thingiverse just to get a decent copy made. I have an FDM 3D printer still inbox I'm going to set up this weekend. But I still want a clean print at least for the first one.

The model work is outstanding !!! There are many members that have 3D printers and offer print services. If you send it blindly to a print shop - there is no guarantee you are going to get a properly scaled model. Those that have printers and are used to printing pistol sized objects have a better chance of getting it right. There are a number of facebook groups that are Star Trek prop based. You can easily find a good person to help you with the first print. I can't wait to see it. Again - Fine model sir. Gordon

Thanks for the input. I've got a printer and am going to give it a try first. Also, I'm still finding my way around the site. There's a lot to take in here.

Nice model, I noticed that your phaser emitters are flat, in the photo it is clear that the emitter follows the arch of the main body cover. If you are going to put this much work into something, try to get everything right the first time before you print it.

Here is a topdown view of the emitters. I didn't curve them. However, they are at an angle to each other.

Here's one of the views I worked off when I was building the gun.

Interested in the files
Could offer resin prints

Are you saying you can make resin prints? I'm going to offer the print files free at least unit Chrismas over at Thingiverse. I'm new to this, and I'm trying to figure out their license terms. I will post here when there are made available.

A note about the gun: I cannot say it is 100% acuate as all I had to work with was John Eaves' drawing, some screen captures, and internet images. I don't even know if the scale is correct. (See scale guide for printing) Also, I know my (I will call them phase emitters.) are not accurate to the movie prop. I modeled them on John's design, which is a little different. Besides now that I know what I am doing, I can go back and make new ones that are the same as the movie prop. Also, In hindsight, I could have made the scribe lines a little deeper. I'm not happy with the tip of the top front housing as it doesn't come to the correct point. That one was a struggle, and I still haven't figured it out. I'm sure there are other things I know I did not get right. In time, when I know more, I intend to go back and fix some of those things. I call this version 1.0. Hay! I'm still learning. One of the reasons I joined this site.
