Star Lord w/ lights and sound - 3d Print Files - Infinity Orb Base in Progress

That's actually what I would say is the only good feature of the da Vinci, the support struts come off really easily.

Just wanted to say thank you for generously sharing all of your hard work on this cosplay. I've been wanting to build a Starlord costume, and these printable files will help me immensely. Thanks!

Now I just need a time machine so I can go back and start this project with enough time to finish it before ECCC…

Thanks so much for making these files available! (And sorry to necro a thread.)

I have a question about the earpiece. I just can't seem to get the back cover to fit into the cavity. I'm printing in ABS, and the original file makes it too big. I tried scaling the cover by itself to varying degrees, but do far no joy. Any advice?

Any chance you can take a picture of the problem so I can figure out what's going on? I haven't heard of this problem before - the earpiece and the back cover are in the same .stl file, so I can't see how they would become different scales from one another unless you separated them out yourself.

Sure! The pictures below are a print from the original file, printed in ABS at 0.1. You can see that the bottom screw hole actually overlaps the frame when the top is aligned with its hole. After just saw this, I did separate it into another .stl with Netfabb so I could manipulate it by itself.

Here it is printed at 95% of original. It is now too short, but the part that covers the batteries and the notches at the bottom are still too big to fit inside. I tried manipulating just the X and Y to get a better fit, but it only came out kind of oblong.

Edit: Or is it designed to sit on top of the frame and let the screws hold it down? I just assumed that it was supposed to fit into the slot.

It is designed to fit into the slot, yes. It looks like you have two issues going on at once: One is the scale of the cover, which seems to be off now that it has been decoupled from the earpiece for some reason. The other is that it looks like your printer is overextruding a fair bit and it's causing the cover to be too large in pretty much all dimensions.

I had a 3d printed copy sitting on my desk that I haven't really cleaned up, but for quick demonstration:

Because it looks like the printer is over-extruding, no amount of scaling the print up or down will fix it; you need to lower the extrusion rate so the part itself doesn't end up looking overinflated. Failing that, your next best bet would be to print it at the default size and then sand the edges a bunch until you got it to the thinner profile that would fit into the hole. A sharp knife might also help!

I hope this clarifies some of it. And actually, thank you for bringing this thread back up from the dead. :) I'm doing some new work on this outfit for this year's NYCC and intend on reviving it with more progress shots shortly.

Hey, thanks. I'm still fairly new to printing, but I understand what you're saying and will try to correct it.

Did you print the main body with supports? Your interior is much neater than mine. Or could that be an extrusion issue also?

I did print it with supports - I use Simplify3D to generate my GCode. It's pricy, but the supports it produces are quite nice and pop out pretty easily with tweezers.

No worries, I got it to work with a bit of light filing. Are the new progress pics of the helmet? ;) I'd really like to see how you talked the eyes. I've got the eyes and mouth portion of my own helmet already printed and they are fantastic!

I'm actually starting to hit the limits of what I can do with the 3d printed helmet - I have sanded parts of it so much that I'm getting through to support material, hah.

I'm likely to make a mold to pop out some resin copies soon so I can continue working on it in a solid, uniform material. It won't be quite... complete, but it's just one of those silly intermediate steps I feel I have to pursue.

I said I was going to work on this and by god, I meant it!

Helmet got another coat of primer and some light sanding so I could see what the hell is actually going on.

Biggest problem areas are around the cheeks and front grill, since I am nauseatingly OCD about trying to get this stuff right and am now noticing a bunch of ways in which my printed copy diverges from the screen-used one.

The grill on the screen-used one, I now realize, doesn't have overlapping or overhanging segments, but there's simply panel lines between the segments. That's annoying, but truthfully it's not something I'm going to bother fixing on the 3d printed copy because visually, it gets the job done.

The cheeks need a fair bit of cleanup and I ended up filling in some of the panel lines that divide the front of the mask from the sides. I will be etching those back in with power tools, but probably not on the 3d-printed copy.

In the short term, my goal right now is to get the helmet to a point where I can do a quick resin cast of the thing and continue cleanup work. I have been sanding this PLA filament so much that I don't think I can reasonably get much more out of it, and I suspect any future changes I want to make to the thing will be easier when it is all 65D resin, rather than the printed material.

I'm printing mine in ABS. Do you have a solution yet fit the little cylinders that go in the cheeks?

I hope your progress is coming along well, Ein! I finally got some lights installed in mine. I also printed and painted up some gun in the process.

I've spent the last 2 days and a full spool of pla trying to print helagaks awesome model. Thinking my printer was on the fritz. Altering settings and support etc. Looks like there's a physics issue. Going to print yours off. Im an amateur with a new printer so never thought the printer may be struggling with the physical shape

Just like to say thanks to everybody who worked on these files and for keeping them free. They all printed fine, although filling in required when building. This is where I’m at after 7 days, will post a pic once finished.

Hey, sorry for the necropost... but does anyone have the scale factor for the nerf barrels.

The .stl files I downloaded were tiny.
