Staff of Ra

Deciding how big the staff should be. I guess it should be the size we see in the film. But according to the old man it should be about 60 inches. "six Kadam height", "about 72 inches," "wait, take back one kadam to honer the hebrew god who's ark this is." That's about 5 feet and it is about a foot over Indy's head so he must be about 4 feet high.

Anywho my real question is if anyone knows or has done it how wide is the Staff of Ra?????

The bottom of the staff may not have been flush with Indy's feet. Remember that he had to put the base of the staff in a hole in the map room, and that platform with the holes was raised above the floor nearly a foot (if memory serves). So, I would still go with the dialogue-confirmed height, maybe rounding up to 5.5" feet for effect.

hey guys

I'm going nuts trying to find a somewhat accurate staff for Relicmaker's Ra headpiece

I understand that the movie dialogue dictates the staff to be 72" tall but from the movie we see Indy with a staff that's at least 84" (7') tall.

It seems nobody in the USA sells 7-8' long 1" (or even 3/4") diameter wooden dowel rod. :)

I've searched for a Bo Staff in the proper length, but then who knows if it'll be straight or be an accurate size on both ends

Relicmaker's headpiece side fits a 3/4-1" staff and the bottom end fits a 1" staff, although this bottom could be slightly bigger since the bottom staff attachment screws in.

any help would be great!

How about using a curtain rod? Some come in aluminum, plastic and wood... maybe that could work. Just a thought.

Yeah, thanks...I've poured through that thread with no luck.

There seems to be two options...

1) A wooden dowel rod that maintains the same diameter throughout the length of the rod. These would certainly work! The problem is, nobody sells these in 7-8' lengths, the longest I've found is 6'.

2) A Bo Staff. The problem I see here is that they're pricey, at upwards of $100. Then you're not sure if you'll get a straight one. They all seem to have a slight taper to them, which is fine, but the top and bottom attachments of RelicMakers pieces are the same size (1"). The top attachment would actually take a 3/4" rod perfectly, but the bottom really requires a 1" rod to fit properly.

I'm really not trying to be picky here, I'm just having a heckuva time finding something that works.

thanks

brad

The martial arts supply is still not stocked with them but check Brenton's Raven Bar Headpiece thread.

Some guys have come up with some alternatives.

Are you sure RelicMakers attachments are the same size?? Mine are currently packed away, but I was sure the inside measurement of the top attachment is smaller than the bottom...

Found this place in the States that says longer lengths available on request:

Wooden Dowels | Wood Dowels | Dowel Mfr

Good luck with your search!

Andy

Thanks GeordieIndy! I'll give them a call.

The top attachment has a inside hole opening of 3/4", but the outer measurement is 1". So you could use either one really. The 3/4" staff would just fit right in, and a 1" staff could be slightly trimmed to fit as well, with a nice clean look.

The bottom attachment has a big screw end that will just screw into your staff (pun:))...it's diameter is 1", so you could go bigger or smaller on this end but it might look kinda goofy.

Let me know how you get on, I also dropped them an email so hopefully they might be accommodating for you guys!!!

I found a 7' Bo Staff on amazon

Amazon.com: 84" Waxwood Staff: Sports & Outdoors

It's nice and straight, but it's not smooth. One end is the correct 3/4" size but the bottom big end is a little too big. It should be about 1" and it's probably 1.25".

I guess I can hit the thing with sandpaper to make it smooth and make the bottom half closer to that 1" diameter needed. Then stain it.

Anybody have any good pics of the actual staff? It seems to have a redish stain?

thanks

brad

I bought a 1.5-2" (It's shaved down now so I can't remember exact size) round "dowel" at Home Depot not too long ago for a 300 spear. It was 8 ft long.

Go look with the moulding. Its labeled as a closet rod or something like that. Ask somebody that works there in that section. They should know what you are talking about

Yeah, I found the closet rods at all those kind of stores, Lowes, Home Depot and Menards, etc.

The problem with those is they are WAY too thick. You really need something 1" diameter.
