appreciate that dave (pretty sure i have that pic at home, but at work currently). most of uwe's pix (to my knowledge) are "household items"....known to everybody.

always wondered what that big "wire" ...forming a loop, was in that picture?

anyone?

Anybody know what the three little greeblies are from thats glued to the top and bottom of the wings, about a millimeter above or below the black solar panel section?

Are they ship guns from one of the battleships?

Believe it or not, there where times they displayed SW artifacts without any display cases - the bomber for example just dangled under the ceiling of the museum's show room (hence the wire)!

By the way, Gabor Andrä shot the picture, Uwe distributed it to our benefit.

The part in the blue box (Prince of Wales, Part B5) doesn't seem to be on the Tie Bomber in the Chronicles pics, but appears in the MOM tour photos (and this series by Uwe Fischer). It seems to be added later and usually has the middle post snapped off. Does anyone know if this was on the filmed version and just pushed up under the Rodney part a bit further and thus hidden from a front view?
Cheers, JT
The part was there when it was built, but it is mostly hidden from view unless you have a good view of the bottom. Unfortunately, the TIE Bomber (and other original ILM ships) have shed parts over the years. The TIE Bomber is now missing at least 3 or 4 parts. When it was displayed in Brooklyn, it was missing its back panel (the one between the two cylinders) and several details from the lower, middle section.

I'm working on one of these too & I'm only missing the Harrier, POW & Stuka parts. If anyone has any suggestions or offers please let me know via PM, otherwise I'll have to scratchbuild them. Thanks!

Excellent build!

Hello Julien, I hope maybe you can shed some light on the size dimensions needed for a studio scale tie bomber, specifically the width of the tube that comes from the Airfix Saturn V 1/144 kit.

I took a measurement of the tube that's needed for the cockpit, it measures 1-13/16" wide and 3-1/2" long.

My question, are these the same measurements that came with the original release of the Saturn V or did Airfix make this particular part smaller?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The main body(s) of the TB is 2". The part of the Saturn five that matches the tube dia. has to be cut from the narrowing end of the second stage.

In the new release of the Airfix Saturn V, there is no part that has a diameter of 2 inches. The closest to it is the Stage 3 section, which has an outer dia. of 1.750" (sorry for the wrong dia. from above). Looks like I'll have to take a page out of Juliens playbook and scratch the two tubes.

The Stage 2 section that you had mentioned Swgeek, with the tapered end, that has to be cut off, has an outer dia. of 2.750" at the large opening. I imagine with some trimming at the end, I'll achieve the 2" requirment.

I suspect that part 61, the ring that the Lunar Module sits in, is also utilized with part 42, the cone shaped piece(s) that is visible from the back where the engines are.

Scratchy, the parts of the new released used on the Bomber are the same.
The fuselage bodies of the ILM miniature were 2" pvc tubing. SWgeek mentioned the stage 2 because its tapered end is indeed used at the rear of the fuselage bodies.

Thanks Julien, this has cleared up some questions of the build for me.

It probally won't be the last:unsure

Since where on this topic, I just picked up some 2" PVC. What length did you cut the cockpit/bomb tubes at?

Not quite 4" a tad shorter at 88.5mm is the measurement I used!. Are you using Plastruct tubing for the bodies?.

I'm using white PVC vacuum pipe, this pipe is used for indoor vacuums for homes. It looks to be about .060 thick and appears to be soft like styrene, so engraving it should be very workable. I got a 5'5" piece for $2.00cdn at Home Depot. I'll need to sand the outer walls smooth, but I don't forsee any problems with that. When I cut the pieces in my compound mitre saw, there was no chipping at all, nice clean cut, just need to cut it slow. Cutting it fast would cause "waves" in the cut.

As I type this, I tried gluing some styrene to it and it just took beautifully!

Did you end up finding the Harrier parts you needed? I ended up buying the wrong version of the Airfix kit and these are last pieces I need for my own build.

If you have them, would you be interested in making a cast of them? :)

Not sure to whom this message was addressed to, but that is one of the few parts that I'm missing. I was planning to scratchbuild these parts myself - they don't look too difficult to make and they are not in plain view. If I succeed, I would be happy to try to cast them for you if you're interested.

The biggest challenge for me so far has been making extras of those small Leopold parts - the TB uses about 20 of 'em but the kit only comes with 4!

So sorry to hear that you got the wrong Airfix Harrier - that's happened to several people - it has to be a real old version of the kit.
