SS ANH TIE Fighter - some slight progress

Re: SS ANH TIE Fighter - very early progress

Just wondering if anybody could help. I'm getting ready to get my wings laser cut. But first I need to settle on good thickness measurements.

My calculations going off of kit parts show the:
- wing stars to be .080" thick
- h-channel is .25"
- Koolshade is about .060" thick
- center card stock about .080"

So, the two layers of Koolshade and center card stock sandwich together for a combined thickness of about .2" which is about right for the H-channel used.

I'm still trying to decide whether to make one master star or 4 individuals using cast parts. A master star would be a nightmare only because I currently do not have any pressure casting equipment. Can anyone tell me how ILM cast theirs? Either way, this would be a more accurate way of going about it only because ILM used this method. Not trying to recreate each bubble or imperfection, but rather the experience.

Casting each greeblie, on the other hand, would be time consuming but would also have a cleaner appearance. Hmmm...

Anyway, if anybody would like to chime in on the thickness of the wing parts, I would appreciate it!

Hey Joe,If your going to try casting the wing star & still need the 1 Matra rim LMK.I still never got the chance to try casting some of the other small parts but would like to give a try in the near future.

Dave, I would kill for a Matra rim! Or pay, whichever is easiest! :D I've got your back on extras once I get going.

Well I do have one person I would like to get rid of.:lol

PM me your address & I'll try to get it in the mail this week.

Re: SS ANH TIE Fighter - very early progress

Man! Very sad story just now with the local laser cutter shop! I go down there hoping to hire him to cut my set of wing parts. Definite no-go!!!! The dude was rude and will not get my business. Very unfortunate....

Hi Joe,

Do you know the exact size to cut the koolshade?

thanks Eric.

Re: SS ANH TIE Fighter - very early progress

Not exact sizes Eric. I do have some templates but I was going to try and build the stars and compare the templates to them.

Re: SS ANH TIE Fighter - very early progress

Portumac, thanks bro! I'm looking for a way to get the stars cut and then I can continue. In the meantime, I've been id'ing and gathering the materials for the cockpit. I tested the measurements a while back trying to confirm Steve's 5" sphere and .060" plating. I'm pretty set on that and may dust off the files soon to continue work.

So, I've finally found some time to work on models. I told myself I'd be continuing with my 32" Falcon. But since I am waiting on a Plastruct order for it, it is on hold for now.

In the meantime, I decided to continue research on my TIE wings. Rob, (dsp5500) kinda nudged me to use Rhino for cad drawing. I'd been having a tough time using AutoCAD. Anyway, so for the past 6 hours I forced myself to learn Rhino. Here is my progress so far. I'm building all the plain surfaces, including the different Plastruct beams.

Below is my first 3D drawing ever! I'm quickly realizing the power of such a tool. See, I like saving money where I can. This way I can study things before I make my cuts.

The first thing I tested was figuring out the height of the raised center hub. It took about 30 minutes and I had the height measurements and templates for the side walls. I'm happy to say that all the kit parts fit perfectly in them!

Please excuse my enthusiasm! I literally needed to rip myself away from my PC before I pulled an all-nighter!

NOTE: I did not create the original specs, they were given to me, so I can't share them. I just created the 3D model from them. I did scratch build the H-Beams and solid 3/16" beams on the wing star, though! That was all me! :)

Well bugger me!!
Looking good, Thats you first go!
I use it the same way, To play around with size and proportions, you can play around all you want till you get it looking good. Make sure to set up the display properties to the dimensions you want to use, also the grid spacing as well. I have a major grid line every 5mm and minor every 1mm with snaps every .5mm
I expect a copy of the wing when your done:love (Only Half Joking)

Oh and check your email Jason!

Looks great joe!! Was wondering, it looks like you are missing the center styrene to adhere the koolshade to. Please keep us up to date on thie tie, I love these builds, so much talent here.

Thanks guys! I regret I can't share, I gave my word. But yeah, Rob, this drawing has already answered some of the questions I had about the assembly. It's opened up new questions, but it's helping either way.

PC, Yeah, I'm still working on the middle layers. Should be done later today.

Joe

Looking great Joe. Your Rhino skills are progressing faster than mine. :darnkids
If you need any "laser" cutting done, let me know. I have access to a 32" by 18" bed.

Dave, thanks bro! Yeah, something about the damn TIE that intrigues me! Chipping away slowly but I'll get there.

Simon, thank as well!

Joe

Oh, SWGeek, if your offer is good for some of my own original work, I might have to hit you up in the future!
