Spray Paint and Oils???

I have a toy that I primed and painted with Krylon Spraypaint.

Will it mess it up if I paint the details with oil paint? How long do oils take to dry? Can I use thinner or anything like that?

Are there any other paints that go on with good coverage?

I've used enamels but they take a ton of coats to make opaque. I need to do some fades but I don't have my airbrush available for it.

Thanks.

I'd go for acrylic. Oils can take weeks to dry properly will knacker your brushes and I only ever use them to weather props and models. They give very good coverage especially from an airbrush and can be thinned to achieve perfect fades.

Oils are good for washes, not for primary coverage because of their paste-like consistency.

Using oil as an actual coat is a pain because they need to be thinned with turpenoid to the correct consistency, which could be a lot of trial and error. And then, it could be a few days before they're dry.

You're better off using acrylics, even if you have to brush them on. Get some acrylic thinner (I believe you can use 91% denatured alcohol). Dip your brush in the thinner, then wipe it on a paper towel. Then dip it in the paint. The pre-thinner application will keep the paint from gumming up your brush, though you will need to re-dip in the thinner every couple of trips to the paint bottle. And every once in a while, you'll need to completely clean the brush to really get rid of the build-up.

Thanks for the replies!

I got lucky and had access to an airbrush setup so I didn't need oils after all. Here's what I needed it for.
