Spiffin First Suit Build

Does anybody have any experience with evironmolds alginates? I just got a 20# batch of the LifeMold slow set alginate. It's a bit more expensive than the other stuff but it suppose to have a higher total yield because of it's 7 to 1 mix ratio. Using this said mixture of 7 to 1 the alginate comes out way to runny. Has anybody used this stuff before and know if the 7 to 1 mix ratio is ******** or am I doing something wrong? I have an accurate scale and I have been using 80* water and a power drill mixer to mix it for 60 seconds. Right now I am just assuming the 7 to 1 claim is ******** and I just need to thicken it up with more alginate. But that is quite irritating since I purchased this stuff specifically because it was a higher yield alginate....anyway enough complaining....any advice would be appreciated.k bye.

Alrighty more work done with texturing and what not. Almost done i think. I need to make a spot or two for the top teef. A little more texturing on the sides of the neck and the dome. Then I need to get this ******* off the wood stand so I can get under the chin. Not sure how I plan to get it off the wood though. Not sure how to do it or what to use. Most definately going to use a lot of fowl language though I'm sure. Other than that If I am diligent and don't wreak anything getting it off the wood I hopefully will be doing the mold soon.

Overall nice sculpt but, if I might make a suggestion, the sculpt's right eye is a little lower than need be. Other than that, very impressive! Nice details!

Thanks for the for the kind words. About the eye...not that I look at it....the right eye is not set into the socket as deep as the other.... that might be the problem.....investigation shall commence.

Ello! Did some work and such. The head is pretty much done. Just have to get it off the wood stand jobby so I can finish sculpting under the chin. So I had my sister take some fancy pictures with expensive camera. Quite nice I must say. And I also started on the bio as well. Made a plaster/ultracal armature/rig type deal over the head to start with. Bio is turing out to be a little more tricky than I had expected. I figured it was going to be pretty stright forward but alas, My asumptions have failed me. But I'm getting there. Still not entirely sure what it's gonna look like as an end result either. Just gonna wing it I guess. But my sister likes the wolf bio and the traditional p1 bio and also likes some of the others that have decoratvie pieces on the cheek type area. So I will probably come up with some sort of blend between the 3.

More work done to the bio. Symmetry is off I know. I was fighting with it trying to get the shape right so I wanted to figure it out first then I could try to make the otherside match. Seemed better at the the time to screw up one side and redo it a million times rather than screw up both sides and redo both of them a million times. O well. I think its at least headed in the right direction.

Haven't posted progress lately. Photobucket was pissing me off so I didn't upload anything. Here is where I am at currently. Adding some fun shapes and such to snaz up the bio. started adding texture as well. Eventually adding some spikes and such around the rim/crest/whateverthehellitscalled.

Hey thanks. I'm really looking forward to casting these as well. Since the midwest has been unnaturally warm as of late...I might be even closer to doing so. I have been waiting for safe latex shipping temperatures.

How did you make the texture on the bio bro? Looking really good.

Thanks. The hammered steel look (or at least that was what I was going for) I made by hitting/poking the clay surface with the handle of a screwdriver actually. I tried a few different objects and it ended up being the screwdriver handle that was the right size. The finer texture on the dome/forehead area done the same way essentially but with a smaller object. I believe it was the handle of a paint brush that had a rounded end. Apparently handles of things seem to be the best tool for this job.

Nice bro, i used a brush too to get the texture on my shoulder armor, but mine didnt come out as clean as yours. Good job bro.

Dude that looks awesome. Nice clean texture and incrediably even through out. Nice one, keep them updates coming my friend

Okey dokey friends. I think the Bio sclupt is done. Unless I see or think of something by the time the smooth on stuff gets to me. I have been doing the research on if I should go with tin cure or platinum cure silicone. I will be casting in latex for the mask and urethan plastic for the bio. So if I am not mistaken either one should be just fine. I am leaning towards the tin silicone basically because it is much cheaper as far as the smooth on stuff goes. Does anybody know off the top of their head if there is something I am missing that I should consider the platinum stuff? Seems to me that the added cost for platinum cure isn't worth it in my situation....Any way, here are some images of the final sculpt.

Alrighty. Finished my first molding experience. First time with silicone and such. I think....I shall get a fast cat next time. Babysitting a mold for 26 hours isn't terribly fun. Oh well. The mold isn't as neat as I would like. But I think it will serve my purpose. Next will be casting. I got smoothcast 320 coming soon. It was backordered so I get to wait around a bit. Hopefully it will be here before the end of the week so I can get a pull ready for painting over the weekend. The only thing is I am a bit fuzzy on the casting process. I have been searching for some tips but haven't been able to find anything detailed enough for my pea brain to make sense of. Anybody got any tips or perhaps a link or two to a helpful thread?

Well Enough yaping I spose. Here are the images. Don't make fun of the sloppiness. First time remember. kbye.

YAY FIRST PULL DONE!!! Just have some thin areas to thicken up. As well as some cleanup on the edges. Not perfect as expected from the sloppy mold making. But pretty good. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out for my first go. I see that I probably should have got the 300 series smoothcast instead of the 380 series. Eh. Oh well. This stuff is supposed to be tougher. Just in case somebody chucks a brick at the pred head we should be good.
