Spideyfox Suit, FINISHED

As you know, our friend Spideyfox has passed away. I've done quite a few comission suits already so I've been exchanging emails with his mom, Nicole, and I told her that I'll gladly take care of the suit for her.

The suit is a Superior Spider-man build, Oradhar's design. I asked her if it was ok to create this thread because I want to make the perfect Superior Spider-Man suit for Spideyfox's brother. Tjack is already building the lenses for the suit, I plan to print it, apply a thin layer of puffy paint on the webs and sew it, but I'd like to give everyone a chance to pitch in and be part of the making of the suit. Maybe some of you want to make a 3d design for the wrist pieces for free and another one can print it. Maybe you bought the perfect shoes for the suit but they were too small for you and you want to donate them. Maybe you have a great idea to build a backpack and you want me to try it out. Basically, if you want to, you can offer your help in the comments. I think it would be a nice way to honor Ben's memory.

If you can help 3d printing the shooters you can find awesome free files over here, done by epilepticsquirl a while back. I might be able to provide the leather cuffs if you want to finish them yourself or you can send them over and I'll paint them and put them in the cuffs. Ben was trying to accomplish something like markpoon's shooters:


EDIT: Cole has received his suit, her mom, Nicole, was very kind and sent me this super cute pic of the suit:

I ended up puffy painting the spider and the webs everywhere except in the gloves to make it easier to grab stuff. Thank you all for helping out!

Awesome of you to help out Ben had asked me to make him a set of my regular asm2 frames with silver lenses with a gold hexagon sticker covering them so they aren't going to look the same as in that pic. He figured my current superior frames were going to be too big for his brother to wear. I shipped out the frames and lenses tonight, and I'm really looking forward to seeing this suit come together

Perfect! Do you have the design or a pic of the lenses? I can include it in the post as a reference pic, maybe we can incorporate part of the design of the lenses somewhere in the suit.

I live within an hour of the family and would gladly offer anything I can to help.

In fact I had just PM'd Art about this very type of project earlier so I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who wanted to do this!

The thing to be aware of is that this suit will have to be custom fitted beyond the normal scaling that people do. If the family is okay with it, (as I'd need to work with them in person to scale it all properly) I'd be willing to develop a new pelting arrangement specifically to fit a child for this project.

Afterwards, just as a small token of memorial, I'd like to release the pelting pattern for free and name it in Ben's honor. The Raimi pattern and MCL34N pattern have retained their names so I think it would be a fitting tribute for his name to live on every time a young Spidey fan wanted a costume.

That actually sounds great! I already bought the fabric so, if you create the design, I'll gladly print and sew it. I was just planning on scaling the suit based on the measurements of Ben's brother, since I've done suits for kids before, but having a file named after him is beautiful.

I'm a little worried about the wrist pieces. I know Ben wanted to build them and incorporate that in the suit, he even set up a gofundme account to ask for money to pay for some classes, but I've never designed something like that before. I've been looking for a pepakura file but haven't found any. Any Ideas?

Are there any better reference shots of the pieces? They look relatively simple to me, but maybe they're just more complex than I can tell.

And since you're in touch with the family, perhaps you could ask how tall his brother is. I'll need a "waste" suit to develop a new pelting pattern and heigh would be enough to get one of those. I just don't want to overwhelm them with too many of us reaching out at once. So, it looks like you're our point man on this one.

Seems like he was trying to create the TASM shooters. I live in Mexico so getting a nice leather cuffs wouldn't be a problem but 3d printing is quite expensive around here for the actual shooters.

I was looking at my superior comics and it seems like there are two different wrist pieces, I took a photo of them. Since I haven't really followed the superior arc I can't tell if its the artist choice or if there are actually two models that Spider-Man uses. The first one is quite simple and it changes length depending of the angle, sometimes it's covering his whole forearm, sometimes just barely half. They both have the red circular light thingy that apparently he presses to talk to his minions.

Based on the first image you just posted, it could honestly be done as an EVA foam piece, carved, sanded, coated, and glued right to the suit. (I also would want to keep it light and simple for a young kid to wear) The lights would then be the only questionable portion of the build.

Even the image at the top of the page could be done fairly simply with some EVA foam with decent results.

That looks like a combination of the other two, silver like the first but shorter and more detailed like the second one. That's why it's impossible to make a 100% comic accurate replica suit I guess. On the plus side, it also means that we can focus on quality instead of accuracy.

EVA foam was my first thought since I've used it before, although I've never free-handed any design before, but it can fall apart and bend over really quickly. We have to remember that it will be for a child, so maybe I could make the whole thing out of plastic if I can make a good figure to mold. That's why I was looking a pepakura design. I wouldn't glue it though. I think a child's suit must be washer-friendly. I'd probably use either Velcro for a more accurate look or some sort of elastic so he can play with those separately. What do you think?

Elastic is brilliant! That way he can slide them on and off easily and wear them even when not in costume.

I still think that EVA is the way to go, especially if we start with thicker foam so it can actually be carved into shape. Other options can be considered (Sculpting, pep, etc) if that doesn't pan out, but I think the bonus of having it be soft and flexible is a great addition.

The major issue with Superior Spiderman is that his appearance, namely his boots and gauntlets, change drastically from one panel to the next in terms of shape, size, etc.

However, here are concept art pictures from a book I bought from Humberto Ramos (the artist behind both Superior and Amazing Spiderman) at Comic Con this year. Hopefully they are of use.

Exactly what I thought. I'll buy some thick EVA foam to try and build some nice gauntlets, although I'd rather use a pepakura file if anyone can find it. The lights are way easier, since you can buy them everywhere. Even if I wanted to create something custom made, the led installation is quite simple.

I had a superior suit that has a honeycomb overlay, would consider that to match the honeycomb on the eyes lenses. Love what you're doing for his brother, true hero and all around great person you guys are.

Great start guys, I excpected nothing less from this awesome community of artists, I don't know how I can further contribute to it as the works and thoughts are starting out brilliantly.

I'll definitelly follow the build and chime in wherever I can.
