Spider-Man Mask Mod

I recently bought a zentai Spider-Man suit. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality, but I knew that I had to make some changes. The mask in particular needed some work. Here's what it looked like out of the box:

The eyes were crooked, and I wanted to have a more comic-style set of anyways, so I made my own set of lenses. I had some scrap acrylic lying around, so I made a template:

And then I cut them out of the acrylic. I tried using my wife's hairdryer to bend the frames, but it wasn't cutting it. I decided to stick them in my toaster oven to them up:

Mmmm, toasty! (With a hint of melted plastic... :behave). Worked quite well, I think. Anyways, a coat of primer, a coat of black, and three layers of sheer white fabric gave me this:

I also did some alterations so that the mask fit better. The main problem was the neck, which just hung down off my chin. I took that in, and added an invisible zipper at the back of the mask. Here's the final result:

Thanks! I cut the rough shape using my trusty Dremel with a plastic cut-off wheel:

and then I did a lot of sanding to get it into better shape.

Excellent. I'm really happy I found this post as I'm working on something similar. I picked up this suit. It is a pretty good start (as I am new to this and do not yet have as much experience as a lot of the folks here.

The suit itself is actually pretty nice. It fits well and needs minor modification (soles for one, and I would love to figure out how to put in a zipper to pee and a hidden pocket of some sort!)

The mask is another story. It doesn't look half as good as in the pic. The eyes are not great and a bit too see through. There are also these two small nose holes that drove me nuts.

I took care of the holes by essentially cutting out the webbed panel that they were on and sewed in a similar sized panel. The webbing makes it easy to hide stitching so I was pleased with this. I would like to do something similar to what you did with the eyes. I agree, I prefer the comic style, and I think Spidy4fun built one of the coolest suits out there (pic below)

No probs, thanks man! Let me know if you need any help with your eyes. And I agree about the Spidey4Fun pics, they look great! I can see that he went for more of a McFarlane look with the eyes though. Personally, I've always thought the McFarlane-style eyes were a little too big (blasphemy, I know ), so I made mine a little bit smaller. Anyways, good luck with your build!

I figured I repost this here since it didn't seem to get much of a reaction in the Spidey fitness thread: I know it's not much, but I'm really really happy with how my costume turned out, especially in terms of my fitness. I know it doesn''t hold a candle to the awesome Spidey suits elsewhere on this forum, but for a first semi-serious costume, I'm quite pleased.

Looks cool dude! The lenses really do make the difference in these suits!
And for a zentai it actually looks pretty well made besides the lenses which you fixed. :thumbsup :thumbsup
