Spider-Man Mask Mod

This is really wonderful! Do you mind going into a bit more detail regarding how you took in the chin? I have a black zentai spidersuit that I'm trying to turn into a decent classic comics symbiote suit before I tackle a dye-sub print version and I'm having the exact same issues with the mask.
I also wouldn't mind some info about the white eye fabric. ;)
Again, great job!

Thanks! The way the mask came out of the box, the neck was basically one big cylinder, with none of the tapering necessary to fit the neck properly. What I did was put the mask on and pinch the loose fabric on the front of the neck and made a light mark (I used chalk) to see where the pinch ended. Then I took the mask off, flipped it inside out, and then pinned where the pinch was. Here is a side view of my mask when it's inside out:

The black lines denote pre-existing seams, and the green line is where I did my pin/sew line. After sewing along the green line (make sure to use a stretch stitch setting on your machine, if you have one), I just cut off the excess material. Unfortunately, this modification made it so I couldn't actually fit my head through the neck hole anymore, so I had to put an invisible zipper along the back seam.

As for the white eye fabric, I just went to my local craft store with a fabric department and found the most transparent white fabric that they had. I couldn't really tell you more beyond that. It works ok, but I needed to use three layers for each eye to completely white them out, which made it a little hard to see out of them. The plus side is that you don't need very much material, so you can get away with buying the minimum amount of yardage that the place sells (mine was 1/8th yd, ended up being <$5 for the material).

Brilliant, thank you! Looks like I'm going to have to break down and get a sewing machine. :unsure Christmas, I suppose. It can only help for other costumes!

My mask is attached to the rest of the costume, so it already has a zipper partway up the back, but the sewing process looks like it'll still be pretty similar, as long as the new seam meets the original at the base of the throat.

Well, you could definitely get away with doing just this seam by hand, but if you're going to be doing any more adjustments/other costume work it'd probably be worth it to get a sewing machine. I got a pretty cheap one for ~$150 from KMart, and it's worked really well so far. Good luck! And feel free to post your results here if you don't want to start your own thread, I'd love to check it out.

Cool beans, thanks again!

I like what you did. This is great stuff! You mentioned cutting your frames out of acrylic. So I'm guessing it was in sheet form? Where or how did you did you get it?

Wow sweet! That's cheaper than I expected! Thanks for the info. Do you think boiling water would be hot enough to bend the frames if I were to try your method?

I haven't seen anyone on here try bending acrylic by boiling water, but I don't have a lot of experience with these things. You might try poking around the forum a bit more to see if it's possible. All else fails, you could just try it and see if it works. I'm guessing it'd be hot enough, but you'd need to be extra careful to not get burned by the water.
