Here's the best I could do:

It sort of seems that the breathing hose (visible in the Joe Johnson shot on the left, can't make it out on the other two)... that the hose is attached to a SPHERE on the back there...

I think it goes up into the helmet on the back, like the ATAT driver's does.

Hey.

Maybe the backpack is made up of all those things we though were on the other props.

So its a fire extinguisher nozzle, some motorcycle grips, a sink drain...

I think this variation can be open to a lot of interpretation due to lack of any good pics, reference, etc. Basic guidelines might be:

Long black hose to connect somewhere to the helmet
2 vertical cylindrical items that may or may not be rockets
1 horizontal cylinder of some sort that may or may not have rocket exhaust ports as we are use to seeing them on Boba Fett's Rocket Pack.
They appear short, and ride above the O2 Canister on the belt.

Just some musings, but there seems to be a lot of room for interpretations. Can we tell what sort of weapon they carry?

It works on ATM camera footage when they're trying to see the face of a bank robber a mile down the street.

LOL. Somebody's been watching too much CSI. And Super Troopers.

As for asking Joe, well, a) Who has his number, b ) He's probably got more important things to do than answer fanboy questions, like ruin another franchise, and c) Even if a and b weren't true, who the heck would remember a backpack he wore thirty years ago in meticulous detail?

well, i put mine into adobe photoshop cs2

and hit the sharpen, sharpen more, and smart sharpen and played around with it for those pics and this one...

and i am good with comps, and i dont know about u guys, but pixels, the more u zoom in on an image, the bigger the pixels get, so if you have footage, you cant make it better, just bigger.

that is called digital zoom, that is why camcorders have like 1000 digital zoom, cuz it doesnt do anything.

FOX broadcast the entire OT in HD around 1999 when Ep.I came out...it was a while ago nonetheless when very few had the capabilities to grasp the full potential of it

whats sad is im friends with the 2 night time master controls at our local fox station.

prob coulda sat there and rewound zoomed whatever... :cry

and to what SWman said, that was my point to get a better zoom we need a HD screen grab so the pixels dont do what your saying they are doing.

i would surely love to see a good pic of this, seeing as im a huge TK freak and a fan of all things ANH...

i used to sit and pause on VHS as a kid on this exact scene... WAY back in the 80s.

you of course couldnt make it out as to what you were looking at, but i was convinced they were space troopers with jetpacks, and i was convinced i could see it.
