Space 1999: Moonbase Alpha

I never knew so much of it was intact!

I thought just chunks here and there in private hands.

What great news.

Basically the model was mounted to a 12' x 12' board. It had to be moved from display to storage or be scrapped. The decision was taken to remove and save as much of the model as possible (thank god). Unfortunately, the landing pads were simple thin vac forms and due to their cone shape didn't survive the salvaging, they were trapped in the plaster and cement landscape and fell to pieces when attempting removal

In context, they had a matter of hours to remove this and many other items or lose the lot. Hard and fast decisions had to be made.

If you watched the show you'd know that Moonbase Alpha survives just about anything. :lol

Now that clear photos of Clavius Base from "2001 a space odyssey" are available, it's interesting to note how similar the Alpha design is!

That's because both bases were pretty much designed solely by Brian Johnson - according to him anyway. Even the basic idea for the Eagle apparently dates from an unused Johnson design for 2001.

Re: Space 1999: Moonbase Alpha - SOLD!

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to report that the model has been sold to a british collector and will remain in the UK after I have refurbished it and stabilised the few places that need work.

Thanks to everyone who showed interest, I will post more pictures detailing the work done with a full reveal.

Hi Guys,

I have been working on a blueprint set and finally managed to finish my Main Mission Replica. This is a studio scale replica made from laser cut parts, I have all the CAD files for this and will be selling a kit at some time in the future.

Panel details were copied from the original model and are exactly duplicated.

95% of details added and a coat of primer to check for anomalies.

Scotchlite material added as per the original, it looks the part when flash photographed. I was pleased with it. :D

As someone who grew up with it airing on Sci Fi for a woefully too short time I got to say that this is beautiful and also heart warming.
