Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club (PIC HEAVY!)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED NOV 3RD (PIC HEAVY!)

Looking good so far and I never would have though of using fishing bobbers for anything.

Me either, Wes, until I happened to get a look in my friend's tackle box. Suddenly a light went on! :) I'm just lucky they come in sizes so close to the scale that I needed!

Plus, fishing bobbers aren't too handy when catching fish sticks...:)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club MEGA UPDATE NOV 29 (PIC HEAVY!)

OMG Bob, you are crazy out of control!!! :lol

That is one MEGA UPDATE! So many things to admire! The jigs you have built are bloody brilliant and I am definitely using that method, too! Such ingenuity and skill! Just awesome all round!

I have had so many external issues to deal with that I have struggled just to complete the "package" which I will hopefully have in the mail to you on Friday at the latest.

In my defence, I have been redoing my parents' bathroom for them and they live about 20 miles away, so I have been staying there to minimise travel expenses. I will be back on the case now though for sure! talk about inspiration!!!

All that styrene sitting there gently calling to me.....

Top notch work Mate and I really hope that you get the comments you deserve for your sterling work!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club MEGA UPDATE NOV 29 (PIC HEAVY!)

Bob, that is ingenious. Especially the mount you made to help you with scale. Just plain brilliant.

LOL. Brilliant update with the forward section and the bells. The whole ship seems to be there already.

Darren, a break is sometimes helpful to let the plans simmer in your subconscious while you work on other things. I know you'll be back on the build with a vengeance.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club MEGA UPDATE NOV 29 (PIC HEAVY!)

Hey guys? You still around? Or did over indulgence on thanksgiving get ya? :)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club MEGA UPDATE NOV 29 (PIC HEAVY!)

Genius works in spurts, I think.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED NOV 3RD (PIC HEAVY!)

Hi here is my own large scale scratchbuilt eagle she is just over 50 inches long and has been bought by a collector here I am holding my baby before she left to fly in space.

regards Barrie please let me know what you think.
Wow, you really get an idea of the size seeing you holding it , the Eagle has been on my list to do models after my Galactica I think I'll make one but not 50 inches Lol probably 23".

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club MEGA UPDATE NOV 29 (PIC HEAVY!)

I've just got the profiles of the command module printed to work with. I'm going the Atlanthia sized version and until I had the prints done I really didn't appreciate the size.

OMG! It's mahoosive!!

I've fettled the cockpit interior again. The Pilot seats are now even higher and steps have been added to facilitate the occupants getting into them.

I'm also looking at vacuum forming the command module.......... If I get this going I could do the engine bells as well........maybe..perhaps........What have I begun!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club MEGA UPDATE NOV 29 (PIC HEAVY!)

Fantasic work, F3nri5. All those were done using Sketchup? Even the animation? That's truly amazing.

Also, your drawings - would they be 3D-printable at any scale?

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club MEGA UPDATE NOV 29 (PIC HEAVY!)

Hi there Crackerjazz

Cheers. Yep all in sketchup. Sketchup uses it's own file type '.skp' But you can export the objects as 3Ds, obj, DWF, DXF or collada so you could tidy the files up in an alternate app, blender is free, and send the file off I guess. Scale wise if the object is suitable for 3D printing then I suppose you just have to ask for it to be upsized in the printer software.

The eagle was drawn in SU at the studio scale, 43.25", then I scaled it up to 52.25" to get a feel for what madness I was looking at!

The animation is done using the 'proper animation' script in sketchup but due to an ongoing bug sketchup can't export as an AVI file. So I used desktop recorder to record the animation as it happened. Alternatively you can export as a series of image files and then tack them together in a video program to achieve the same. I made an animated gif file of it in 'The Gimp' as well which worked well.

Sketchup is great for 'proofing' stuff and there are a huge range of free ruby scripts which add further useful functions to the basic program, even the free version.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club MEGA UPDATE NOV 29 (PIC HEAVY!)

Awesome stuff - very impressive. And keeping it at studio scale is fantastic enough for me. But bigger is good too! Keep us posted especially about the vacuformed command module and bells (very interested). Darren and Bob....looking forward to more updates.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club MEGA UPDATE NOV 29 (PIC HEAVY!)

F3nri5 - Nice animation there on your vac form machine. Interesting idea as well, using the drawer slides to make it compact.
I too used Sketchup for my eagle. Been on hold for some time though. I 3D printed my engine bells, most of the frame bulkheads, landing gear parts, and most recently the nose/ beak. Its all set for 24" long when I get back to it. Question for ya though. I see in your screen caps that your Sketchup seems to be running in Ubuntu. I did not know they had a version for that. Or are you using WINE or some other emulator.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club MEGA UPDATE NOV 29 (PIC HEAVY!)

Darren and Bob I'm also waiting for more updates!

Hi 8 Perf. Yes I use wine to run sketchup. I had to go into the 'regedit' once when I first install SU to change a 0 to a 1 to make it run but that was all.

The only oddity other than that is the display can run one click behind the mouse. IE you click an object to select it and it doesn't appear highlighted instantly, though it is, but you get used to it. Oddly enough it actually handles my demands better than it did under windows.

3D printing is becoming a favourite of modellers it seems :)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club MEGA UPDATE NOV 29 (PIC HEAVY!)

Wow, that's great, 8perf! Can you post some pics of the 3D printed bells and other parts? Did they require any cleanup/sanding after printing?

You miss nothing when you looking for the materials.
You are the one who can make a nuke bomb in the kitchen.
Superb craft man ship!!

How familiar are you with debian and knoppix? I don't want to clog the thread but could you send me a PM please?

I have my own thread running over here.

http://www.therpf.com/f11/w-i-p-23-eagle-transporter-space-64632/

I will have to do some minor sanding to clean up some of the roughness and the facets that I forgot to smooth pout in the model b4 printing it. :)
Here are two of the newest pics for the engine bell and the landing gear. I think you can make out the ridges in the engines ok.
As for the gear, the strut mounts and the "feathers" on top of the pads were 3d printed from Sketchup files. The dots on top are to indicate where they go in the landing pods, in this case left and right rear.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club MEGA UPDATE NOV 29 (PIC HEAVY!)

Wow, sorry I've been away so long, guys. I've been very busy recently, then my computer went and bit the dust. I was going to wait until the new year to replace it...but today being my birthday makes that closer than January 1st! :)

Anyhow, thank you all for the kind words of support. I hope to resume the updates very soon!!

Oh, and nice going thus far, F3!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club MEGA UPDATE NOV 29 (PIC HEAVY!)

Nice build 8perf!

I'm still 'pratting' about at the moment. I started adding some lines to the prints of the command module formers for the quad cut outs. But it became apparent that things weren't quite right.

I know I could probably have fudged it to make it work but I prefer the more masochistic approach!

Using sketchup I redrew the CM as accurately as I could. My measure of this were the quad cut outs. Once I was happy that the 3 corners and the internal corner were OK, or at least far closer than the first try I got clever.......... (yeah right)

I drew several flat planes in sketchup. These were then fitted at several points along the main axis of the CM (The line from nose tip to the back bulkhead). I then used the intersect command on each plane.

What this does is. Where ever another object intersects with the plane the plane is 'cut' or marked by the other object. So What I ended up with is several planes with the sectional shape of the CM appropriate to their position. See the attached PDF.

Then setting Sketchup to parallel view and placing the planes in a group fore square to the view I exported them as a .dxf. Imported into Librecad, arranged them in groups to be printed as a .pdf file and Robert is your mothers brother!

Further to all this kerfuffle the old grey cell has been ticking over. The interlinking corridor doors. They are one of those areas that 'doesn't work in the real world' areas we all know and love.

My own solution to this is........These doors will be mad as tambour doors. That is instead of being a single piece solid door each door will be made up of a number of vertical strips that hinge together. SO when the door is slid open it will follow a hidden curve inside the walls of the corridor. Not 'canon' But practical.

Having read many fine and varied builds on this forum I fear I may being going as mad as the rest of you.

I.E. The doors, as above, for starters. Probably scribed hips plastic so they actually do open and close. The 'standard' doors also to open. The passenger pod exit doors also to work.

Interior lighting...... Pulsing blue lights in the engine bells. Also, and I blame the honourable Katsu-san for this.............Fibre optics in the command module to bring the consoles to life.......... AAAAarghhhhhhhh! (Wibble)

I hope to start work on actually forming the Command module and the vacuum former that will do the real work on this.
