Somewhat movie accurate Rocket Raccoon cosplay for my Son

Ok, so I really, really want to make a cool looking Rocket Raccoon costume for my Son. I have zero skills myself when it comes to creating / sewing anything, but my Wife wants to give it a try. So I figured why not put it out there for the whole world to see...?

We are hoping to have this ready for Wondercon which is mid-April. Eek.

This is the look we are going for, to some extent. Not concerned about being 100% movie accurate, but we like the look of this over the old red and blue suit.

We have bought some yellow and blueish fabric and some buttons/straps to give it a start.

The real trick is going to be the head. Our Son is almost 8 years old, so the idea of him wearing a full head covering mask is very unrealistic. It will be too uncomfortable/hot/itchy/etc. So we are thinking of doing some sort of partial mask / hood / ears and then using facepaint on his face. It needs to look really cool, but also be comfortable enough that he can walk around a comic convention for a few hours.

The one thing that IS done to this point, as of today, is the gun. Again not at all movie accurate, but a gun that I thought would look good with the costume. It's a painted Nerf Firefly gun, which looks like this to start:

Here is our gun, with my paint job completed:

That is all for now, I will update as things move along. Since we have very little idea what we are doing, we are completely and utterly open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks for looking!

Hey not a bad idea. That is by far the most difficult / defining part of the whole thing. If the face/head looks like crap, then the whole thing will look like crap. It needs to look cool, and be comfortable for him. The other problem will be keeping it from getting too hot and sweaty.

This is so cool, definitely wanna see how this turns out. I love getting the kids involved. My son is the reason I got into cosplay in the first place.

LOL, my Son is the reason I've gotten into super heroes, collecting, cosplay and drawig.....

I'm sure I will just stick with the gun that I already have, but I wonder if there is anything out there that looks a lot like this gun?

Love the paint job. Can't wait to see the progress on this. I made my youngest a mascot type costume of Picachu, and yes, it gets really hot inside the head. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Fun project!

I think this is awesome. I was wondering how to do this myself. A couple of suggestions... I don't know how old your son is or how willing he is to look the part, but I think making his head look the part will sell it more than the costume. If you can find an appropriately sized prosthetic for his face, you could use something like this for the snout:
Small Fox/Raccoon/Skunk Nose [012] : NorthFur FX & Mascots, Online Store

It's just the nose, which would free up his mouth for talking, etc. The ears shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Thanks that is a great recommendation. I think it would be a good idea to get one of those, and do a dry run with it. Maybe put it on him, and paint his face in the morning and see how comfortable it is just hanging around the house all day. I have no idea how uncomfortable something like that would be.

He is 7 by the way, will be 8 in April. But I totally agree, the head / face is either going to make or break the costume. I'm also wondering if we shouldn't get some fake teeth, as it seems that we may be seeing shots in the movie of RR shooting with his mouth open, and teeth/fangs sticking out. ;)

Amazon UK has a NERF version of one of Rocket's guns that I'm considering ordering to use with my Rocket rod puppet. I don't know how exactly movie-accurate it is, but from the images I've seen of other RPF members repainting it it looks passable.
