Been working on this one on and off for some time now. I found some earlier progress pics that I thought I'd share.

It's of a video game character called Solid Snake. It'll be a full body suit, sculpted from the neck to the wrists and down to the ankles. I have more current ones too..but I have to find them. Damn computers...

Anyway this is the costume artwork..

And this is the WIP...Still rather rough...but I think you get the idea...

The straps and other doohickeys are just there for reference placement for the sculpted areas under and around them.

I have more and will see if I can find them too. Come to think of it, he's almost done. I should just take new ones.
Enjoy.:)

Very cool, I always liked the gear worn in the series. I would love to be able to do a Raiden suit .

Re: Solid Snake Costume Sculpture WIP Pics

David I'm an avid MGS fan, and I'm also a big fan of yours, so... I'm completely blown off!
If you will ever try to make an MGS4 cyborg Raiden I will pay to be your "model"!!!:D
(even if I look more like Naked Snake in real life... :confused)
:p

Re: Solid Snake Costume Sculpture WIP Pics

I would make a the same offer, but the suit would end up looking like a short stick figure Raiden. :lol

Re: Solid Snake Costume Sculpture WIP Pics

Fine - I will take on task !

Nice job as always my friend. I have always envied your skill !!!

Re: Solid Snake Costume Sculpture WIP Pics

Just a quick question, why are you sculping also the "fabric" parts (pants, undershirt, vest, etc...)? :)
I'm just curious...

This costume looks tough to do. The shoulders look to be armour merged with the "fabric parts". The same goes with the elbow and knee pads. It's still a WIP, so I'm curious how the final project will turn out.

And David, weren't you talking about this project 6-7 years ago? I vaguely remember you mentioning this, unless I'm thinking of the vest armour from the first Metal Gear Solid game.

Oye! We have some gamers here! Cool cool...I'm not into these games myself though I love the designs.:angel ....and I have a few more gaming costumes to hammer out by the new year....one in particular should get the Star Wars crowds attention...:)

Minder is right...yes there's some kind of undersuit but it looks form fitting and needs to showcase the muscles well. Not only, but it's got areas like shoulders that seem armored. Besides, I like the suggested look of translucency that the undersuit gives. It'll be a full body rubber suit when done, much like the Haze costumes I did last year...

....the only difference here is that the SS costume will be a full body suit and not split in two like the Haze suits were. I think that the SS suit lends itself beautifully to a full body rubber suit...but I have to be careful with the anatomy and proportions. It's not bulky like the Haze suits so keeping it 'slim' and toned is going to be key.

I've just been too laze to go unwrap the sculpt and take new pics of it. Those are a few months ago, but I'm happy to see you guys digging it already.

The vest has a kevlar like pattern on it with visible stitching and it really helps make it seem separate from the rest of the undersuit. Anyway, I'm on my wifes computer now because mine is getting backed up. When it's ready I'll probably upload new pics.

Thanks guys...it's cool to read your supporting words. :)

Oh and as for me talking about this suit years ago? Sure, it's possible...I used to get tonnes of requests for this so maybe I mentioned it at some point. I really dont know for sure...but I did pattern a vest from this game 'I think'...like I said I'm not a gamer....years ago and never did anything with it. It's the one with the abs showing through the fabric and it goes over the shoulders. Maybe it's an earlier version....I really dont know for sure....and now I want to know what the heck did I do with that pattern?????

Sweet sweet sweet!

I've yet to see a proper MGS2 Snake, and all of the MGS1 Snakes have been rather subpar for the most part as well. Please tell me you've got plans for Grey Fox when this is complete... pretty please?

At first I was interested in this just because it was solid snake, but knowing you did the haze suit is even better! Now the SS costume is destined to be amazing. Congrats on both, and looking forward to seeing updates.

Re: Solid Snake Costume Sculpture WIP Pics

I have waited years to see Solid Snake come to life. Interesting pick doing the MGS2 Sneaking Suit are there any plans for MGS4 Sneaking Suit? With that you could do diffrent color schemes for octo camo.

Yeah I really think David's technique would work like a charm for Snake's OctoCamo...:cool

Re: Solid Snake Costume Sculpture WIP Pics

Love the Metal Gear series and love this suit of yours! Great job David!

Re: Solid Snake Costume Sculpture WIP Pics

here is the one that we did, this costume was done based
off the action figure, this was back at DC 07.

this piece was done by sculpting the jacket and then
laminating a ballistics's clothe over the shore 70 urethane

gabriel, the guy wearing this loved how the jacket would make you stand up straight, giving you not just a girdling effect but also improving your posture

notice how the belt, leg, should, and all straps are of the same width

you might consider sculpting the armor by itself, then sculpt any of the strap pads separately so that they sit over the armor not being already part of the base sculpt, this is also how a studio would have it sculpted for a film, it could also give you the option to make all the straps functional so you can use them to tighten up the suit to the wearer(s)

also gives someone the option to use the armor for more then one character

the artwork from this series has inspired so many other things
I would love to see a liquid snake done with a mixture of sculptured pieces
and machined pieces

Re: Solid Snake Costume Sculpture WIP Pics

that's a good interpretation of the armour from MGS1, but David's work is from MGS2. The armour is slightly different. If I recall, when David was still in the planning stages of the now defunct MGS1 project, he DID intend to do the vest completely separate from the body suit.

Thanks Minder and yes, I did. I also didnt realize how popular this guy was until this thread...go figure....I'm thinking once this is done to do the vest as I envisioned it years ago. The pattern work is done...the rest can be sorted out if I decide to give it a shot as well.

Here's some current pics...I havent done anything really productive on this in a while...and I hate cleaning off dusted clay so...:ninja

Look closely and you can see the carbon fiber texture I'm going to be using for the vest...

In some respects the hard part is over...but there's still a bit to go here. I havent decided how the wearer will access the suit yet, and I'm toying with something for the back. We'll see. At first I wanted a two piece suit but now I've decided on it being a one piece jumpsuit. I suppose the sculpt and form made that decision for me. :)

Once again, the straps are just there for me to figure out the proportions of where the base parts need to be sculpted..they're temporary for now and my clay of choice, as always is Chavant NSP Soft Green color. Awesome stuff.

Guys thanks for the kind words...and I hope I live up to everyone's expectations here. :)

David
