Software Props #3: Aliens sentry gun display

Continuing my occasional series of software props, here's the 'sentry gun computer' from Aliens. It's in Flash so it probably doesn't help you if you own a real GRiD, but it should work on most other computers.

How it works:

Stage 1:

Entirely made up by me. ;) Leads into...

Stage 2:

Setup screen. Move around and set options with the four cursor keys. When you've finished press SPACE to move on to...

Stage 3:

Firing screen (the business end). Press F to fire! Temperature goes up, ammo counter goes down. If you get bored of that, press Z to put it in 'auto' mode. This will just fire at random intervals until the ammo runs out, at which point it will start again. A single pixel in the lower right corner confirms that you're in auto mode.

Pressing R will restart the simulation.

Pressing A, B, C or D will change the letter in the upper corners for a different gun (purely cosmetic).

That's all! It's a .swf file but I've had to ZIP it in order to attach it here. I hope you like it.

^ Seconded! :thumbsup

Brilliant work, Mike. :) I wonder if it'd be possible to add the sound of the guns firing?... :cool

:thumbsup Wow! That's great! Thanks so much for sharing :thumbsup

I just tracked down your other two software props. Really fantastic work. Once again, thanks for freely sharing your time and effort. Great work!

Argh...you have such great little graphics that I can never access on my computer(s). I've repeatedly tried downloading Flash and it confirms the program is installed, but at the same time it never recognizes the .swf extension when I try to open your programs.

When you're installing Flash Player, it's a web browser plug-in. Try opening your browser, then open the swf file through your browser's open command.

Awesome stuff. I agree the gun sounds would be cool, even though the remote monitor wouldn't actually hear them unless he was right on top of them. Just used to hearing them in the film.

I'd like a screensaver too, but I need a Mac version. Actually, I need to investigate making screensavers (Mac and PC) for work projects, so that might help.

Thanks everyone. I did try the gunfire sound but it didn't sound great - plus I thought it more logical not to hear it. :)

Re file formats - I thought a .swf was universal but apparently it's not. Sorry about that. I have now made standalone files for both Mac and PC. You can download them here. Much larger file size but they should run on any PC or Mac (I hope).

Mike, thanks for separating the files out - apparently that did the trick on my computer. (Great stuff, BTW!) If you ever have the time and it's not too much trouble, I'll love your to see previous creations in the same alternative format. :)

Yeah, swfs are universal but require the Flash plugin. I believe most current browsers have it preinstalled. The projector files are the way to go for standalone. Why am I telling you what you already know????:wacko

DAMN Mike, that is every kind of awesome I can think of.

Thanks very much for sharing :thumbsup

Cheers,

Kraig
