SO YOU WANT TO MAKE/BUY A PREDATOR SUIT? READ THIS!!!!!!

is there a recommendation for how someone would solicit a costume-owning member for a film? I think my earlier post got deleted by the admins presumably because i broke a rule or that it was in the wrong forum?

You're asking if you can ask someone if they are interested in a part for a film? It's been tried before but only actually happened once in a fan film called S.E.E.D.

Theres a couple problems with what you're asking. First, unless someone lives very close to you, most people can't just up and leave their regular lives for any given time to assist you with your film. Second, how long are you talking? 1 day of shooting? 1 week? How are you planning on compensating the person for their time and effort - if at all? What about room and board? Third, no one knows you. Are you your own company or do you run a business thats done this many times?

See where I'm going? Your question needs more of those questions answered before anyone can even tell you if there is a remote possibility of what you're asking. Not being rude...just telling you that you need to provide more info here...

oh hey, i would provide all that info in my post, i was asking if there was protocol i should follow. I had created a post earlier and when i came back i saw that it was deleted so i wasn't sure if i broke some rules. after doing some searches, i saw that someone else had created a casting call post, so i'll try that.

This is for all the new members who are looking for Predator parts to make a costume for Halloween. Please understand that most of the suits you see on this site have been put together over a long period of time - 6-12 months on average. Most of those suits are VERY expensive - $2000-$3500.

To give you a more accurate idea of the costs involved, here are some average prices for Predator suit parts:

-latex skin (body suit): $300-500 (more if painted)
-latex and resin armor pieces: $300-$500 (more if painted)
-latex head: $200 raw. Up to $400-600 painted
-Bio helmet: $200 raw. $250-$350 painted
-dreads/dread rings: $100-$300
-all the miscellaneous parts - netting, bones, small animal skulls, lasers or LED's, etc

If you get all the parts raw (unpainted), you could be looking at around $1000, but be prepared to figure out how to paint latex so that the paint doesn't crack when its flexed. If you want it all painted for you, then you are looking at $2500-$3000. Again these are average prices. All the costs vary from person to person.

Painting latex is tricky - search for more info if you plan on doing it yourself. If you want things painted for you, the costs vary depending on who you get to do it.

We are a very helpful community, but please understand - it is next to impossible to make a Predator suit in time for Halloween when it is only a month away- unless you plan on buying a Rubies cheap-o version, or trying your hand at making your own suit from scratch using paper mache, foamies and a Mr Incredible suit.

THE SEARCH BUTTON IS YOUR FRIEND!!! Most of the questions you want to ask have already been asked, so please utilize the search function before asking your questions.

I seriously wanna purchase/ have a suit made. i realize the time and patience that goes into making it so the price seems right to me.
But how would i go about paying for it?

As a "noob" here, I just want to point out one thing: I would never have found this thread had it not shown up on the New Posts list and had the inclination to read it. As a noob here, my main goal was and is to perform research and learn techniques and tricks. The current location of this thread is, from at least one noob's POV, not in the best location. Heck, I'll admit, I was soo jazzed about having found this site through a google search, that I have just consumed my last three days with reading the various threads and completely skipped over the forum rules. Now, I feel guilty as hell, and will be reading it upon finishing this post, LOL. Might I suggest that a posting along the lines of this thread, be placed under the Forum Rules on the main page. I suggest a new posting because though I am sure no hostility is truly meant by the original post, it certainly reads of frustration. Perhaps a kinder, gentler version could be created so as not to scare away any noobs who have the potetial of greatly enhancing the Lair community. Just a thought...

Off to the Forum Rules...

I think its fine the way it is. Location is good and the text itself is clear and shows just what it takes to have a good suit. Gotta realize also that the fact that alot simply log in and dont even bother to introduce themselves but just go straight to the buyer section or hijack someones thread with the question "WTB a 10 dollar suit" can get on some peoples nerves, especially the ones who been here for a while.

I appreciate threads like this that help to give the new members the direct information.

Myself, I come from a different hobby...that of "real" lightsabers with complex electronics, illuminated blades, customizable sounds, etc. We also get a lot of new people who want to jump in with both feet and don't take the time to read or to get to know the other members. This is very prevalent before Haloween, Christmas, and before major conventions. It gets tiring.

I am humble enough to know I am a n00b when it comes to Predator costuming. I know virtually nothing, and many of the skills I have from my other hobby will be of very little use to me here. I see it as a learning experience though, and building a costume is a long-term project for me. I will likely wear the finished costume once or twice due to lack of venues around my area to suit up, but the challenge of taking "nothing" and turning it into a convincing costume is appealing to me. The hundreds of hours I will spend nit-picking details appeals to me. Digging through old threads here trying to glean tidbits of info I can use appeals to me.

so is it a safe assumption that if you do not have 5gs to spend on a suit that your not worthy to be on this site

^^^
No...
It's the same for any and all hobbies. The more you invest, the better quality you have.
That's all I have to say about that. (insert forrest gump voice here)

Ok guys my wife just informed me that my post might have been a little hasty and ignorant
I appologize I just took the original topic the wrong way. As a new member I am getting started
on my own predator project and I am on a budget so if anyone has any ideas I'm all ears.
And yes I understand your post about the quality. I would like nothing else than to have an awesome
custom suit with custom armor and electronics and I'm in awe for those that i saw in the comicon video
on u tube. you guys are my heroes. I'm excited about being a part of this community and I hope to be
an asset as well as a friend.

hey jon, welcome

your skills will come in handy for some aspects. doing the electronics is that little extra oompf that gives a suit reality.
give me clay, ultracal, and 2 part resin and im a happy camper. but, give me a circuit and well, ill have a pile of crap.
that's where the community comes in, there's always someone who can do something you cant.

enjoy the site!

Now now, we were all noobs once. But this is a great advisory post. Expecting an entire top notch suit in a very short amount of time is ridiculous. Cant rush perfection, after all.
i only look up stuff to buy at the moment because i currently lack the skills to fabricate my own

I guess you havn't you heard of The Hunter's Lair Suit Loaner Program?
pick any suit from the suit thread and that member must lend it to a newbie at only the shipping cost?...

let's see,... it started with member number 5, i think it's up to member 8 or 9...

seeing as how we now have over 5 thousand members...your turn should come around 2020

Andrew

OMG!!! why i dont read that before!!! I just spent $70 buck in Michels in clay and tools to star working in my pred suit!!!

I hope see my replica finished before halloween in this year nahhh!!! I just doing for fun, hobbie and little love to the big guy (comparated to the love you show me to Predator its a little) not for wearing the suit for halloween or a con or something else!!!

I know!!! my english its ugly xddd Sorry!!!

Saludos a todos!!!

Hey guys of the lair, i just read some of the posts here and i agree with the elders. I myself am a noob and joined just before october so would be considered one of the annoying halloween influx. But my timing of joining is just that. Timing.

I mean granted i found this site after having the idea of making a pred suit for halloween, and thought i could get one cheap, but i spent 2 weeks browsing posts and huntorials before joining after full consideration of timescale, costs, and skills needed to be learned and honed.

After all, where would the respect and admiration and pride be if you had just bought a respected mambers beautiful craftmanship and wore it only the once!! However if you tried to make your own suit, armour, mask and bio as accurate as possible then you would be aware of how difficult the whole process is, taken from start to finish.

And then to top all that off, to have a fresh noob that doesnt even think of these things wanting a fresh suit without creating any kind of rapor with the respective artists or give them recognition for their work and take them for granted, then i would find that quite annoying aswel.

So go easy on us newbies as we are not all after a quick fix but will require bits of kit and tips from you seasoned members and artists at a cost obviously all things considered.

just some of my thoughts.

Yeah Im hoping the newer people read this as well. This is very important, my own build, as "simple" as it seems, and basic as it is. It took me 3 months to do,
and Im still not completley 100% done with it. You cant have anything that good looking in that short of time. Unless you decide not to sleep now untill Halloween, but that is impossible, unless your a
miracle worker XD.

SO....

Take your time new guys!

Your build doesnt have to be 100% by Halloween, make it look good, even if it is partially done!
This is really good advice.
