So I just watched Lost in Space....

The movie that came out in the late 90's.
I never saw it before, I was turned off by the terrible reviews and how embarrasing the whole merchanising deal nearly ruined some fast food chain (was it LJS?)
Right away I was able to see where this movie was failing. First and foremost I felt everything was WAY overdesigned - the cosumtes, sets and a Lucas-like overuse of CGI.
The dialogue and acting needed a lot of work too but I really felt that the filmmakers tried to be too bold with the vision and that took away from the movie as a whole.
Anyway, now I can scratch that off my list of movies I never wanted to see, but watched anyway.
Still haven't seen Titanic....

LIS may be the biggest dissapointment I've ever had in a theater. The TV show was a staple in my house growing up, and was absolutely my favorite show. Even today I enjoy watching the DVDs with my kids.

I agree that they went too big and changed too many things trying to appeal to a modern audience. Who did they think was going to be their target audience? 20yr olds, or adults who had grown up with the show and wanted to see the characters (I think the Jupiter2, Robot, Chariot, etc were all characters) that they loved on the big screen?

Gary Oldman seemed to have fun with the role. And Matt LeBlanc's weird armored helmet was pretty cool. The rest was iffy at best.

But the worst (for me) was the end, with the ship being sucked in by the planet's gravity. Even though the planet just exploded.

I think the film should have been re-titled "Lost in Time" because that's what the movie loved to focus on more than being lost. Even as a kid when I saw this movie I loathed it. It wasn't any fun and the characters were awful. And the adult Will Robinson? KILL THE YOUND ONE NOW!

I liked the Robot that was about it. I know the toys for the movie are expensive, the one robot is close to 80.00 open at times. Found out the hard way it was cheap plastic while customizing a busted one. I would have rather they'd done something more along the lines of the comic book series that was darker and more mature than the show. Irwin Allen must have been spinning in his grave when it came out. It could just be me too, i grew up on reruns of this show on USA i think in the 90s during the summer before the logan's run show came on tnt in the afternoon.

ahhhh am the only one that really liked this movie? I guess im just obssessed with that beautiful robot, completely 360 redesign from the original b9 but damn its beautiful to look at. I never expected much from the film, but i was glad it was even made into a film. im hoping to pick it up on blu ray this week when it comes out i think?

I didn't hate it, didn't love it. I was mildly freaked out by the fact that Matt LeBlanc looks a LOT like an ex of mine that I'd broken up with (badly) not long before it came out.

I did love the set and prop designs. I think the story was just odd, then again when I first saw it iwas a stupid teenager obsessed with boobs and explosions. I should give it another watch.

Silly me, I liked it.

Me, too. It was one of the first DVDs I ever bought (well over ten years ago) at Blockbuster on sale... I had never seen it before... and really enjoyed it. I still watch it at least once year. A good, fun sci-fi adventure film with lots of interesting props and costumes.

I enjoyed the movie as well. Once they ditched the camp and stuck with the core story, it seemed to work better as all the characters seemed to be true to their originals. Indeed the tech did seem a bit over-designed in spots, but it worked. I loved the new take on the Jupiter 2 and couldn't get enough of working on the model kit when it got released by AMT. Granted I can see the flaws in it and appreciate why it wasn't the cash cow franchise starter the producers hoped it would be. But taken as it is, I still enjoyed it.

Didn't care for it myself. I was a fan of the original (yes it was campy) version as a kid. I thought it was far too much of an attempt to distance itself from the original by over designing everything. Basically, instead of being a faithful, modern take on the story and designs, they radically changed things. A way of saying "This ain't your daddy's Lost in Space." ...Hey! Where have I heard that before?

Nothing like a timely review!:rolleyes
:cool

I actually like it myself, own it on DVD. Nothing but Corney sci-fi fun, which is what I am looking for at times.:thumbsup

Back then we saw a lot of over-design in 'geeky' movies - I offer up the Schumacher Batman flicks:sick
It's obvious that a substantial amount of the film's budget went towards sets, props and costumes but that money could have easily went to better use on a stronger script.
I'm not saying the movie has NO appeal at all - but seeing it for the first time just re-enforced my initial impression of it back when it was released.

Yeah, as a film ill admit it is indeed a rather mediocre film that tried WAY too hard to be good. But I did enjoy it as a kid and I still enjoy watching it every now and then.

This film holds a special place in my heart though, as it was the first movie me and my uncle ever went to together. Ive always looked up to him and he left for the coast guard later that month so he decided to have a fun night with me while he was still home. I remember eating breakfast at a little privately owned restaurant downtown, then he showed me around the various historic landmarks of the city, took me to the capitol building as we watched he legislators in session (first time i learned about politics and understood how it worked), then we ate long john silvers for lunch, then we went to books a million for the afternoon, and then watched this film and I remember enjoying it with him, and afterwards he treated me to baskin robins where I can remember i ordered mint chocolate chip. then he took me back home and I went to bed.

I was 6 then, and yet I still remember it like it was yesterday. So yeah while this film isnt the best out there, it will always be one of my favorites at least for that reason :) ahhh childhood memories

EDIT: and yes, the Robot (s), Major Wests mask and rifle, the Proteus (very Event Horizon look going on there) and the spider creatures made the film for me. If but for entertainment value alone
