So I have been recast!!!

I'm sorry but these type of threads come up and I feel that Adam Savage has covered this issue the best. From now on, anyone who asks about recasting should be met with a response of nothing but this: Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project - Recasting - 11/27/2012 - YouTube

Any follow up questions should be answered with the same link, no need to waste words when a perfect discussion already exists in video form and it includes the opinion of one who is both a member of the RPF as well as a professional prop maker so both sides are discussed.

I dunno man, here is the thing that bugs me. Recasting is bad. Period.

If you take one of my helmets (Dredd for example) I made my sculpt based off of a few sneak peaks from production that were purposely "leaked" to the public to create "buzz" for the upcoming movie. My sculpt is not as accurate as the newer sculpts being made today by other prop artists on this awesome forum of ours after the DVD was released (more reference material). Same goes for my badge (the one in question). Now if someone were to buy my badge and sculpt or build an exact version of it, I would have no way of telling if it were mine or a true "re sculpt" but lets be honest here, why do the work of re sculpting when you can buy one from me and just dump a bit of rubber on it and call it yours? You wouldn't! Not one person would.

If my badge is truly easy to build, then by all means, build one and truly call it your own. Do the work, cut your fingers and sweat a bit the way that I did. If you don't have the drive to do it, then you don't deserve the recognition. That's it.

I'm not saying that taking an idea and recreating something you've seen somewhere is right or wrong (that's a whole other discussion). But if you're no better than a xerox machine, then you have nothing to offer anyone except bad vibes.

Keep your bad intentions off my efforts! This place is for the fans and artists, not shiesters!

As I understand it, Disney will adopt a hands-off approach to copyright issues, just as they did with Marvel. Disney only goes after specifically Disney products, like Mickey and Goofy.

Hope so, for the guys here that do all the Star Wars stuff, would be sad if they were forced to stop :(

I'll just leave it at community guidelines:

B. Selling/trading of recast items. Deliberately recasting another member’s creation without consent is not supported by our communities.
Deliberately recasting an active licensee's product is not supported by our communities.
Selling freely distributed paper props is considered a digital form of recasting.
If anyone believes their item has been recast by a member, they are encouraged to provide proof to our staff, with the understanding that the burden of proof lies solely with the accuser and that members will be considered innocent unless clearly proven otherwise by the aggrieved party.

Next time you join a site, perhaps read about it's policy?

However this situation, if proven, is like a guy buying a music CD, copying the music onto his hard drive, burning several CDs and selling the CDs telling everyone that he is doing the lead vocals. -TazMan2000

I never thought of it that way! But if you extend the metaphor, creating an unlicensed replica is like listening to a song over and over, creating an accurate transcription of the music, hiring a band and booking studio time, and recording you own perfect copy of the performance. Sure, it takes alot of work and talent, but you still can't sell it. Not if ASCAP has anything to say about it, anyway.

but what about 'cover bands'?

They can't release an album without securing the rights and paying to record and release other people's songs. I don't know exactly what the specifics are, but I'd think there's some sort of performance rights involved too.

I thought I had read somewhere that adding sulphur? (I could be completely wrong on the material) to the item will make silicone stick to the item not allowing it to be molded.

I remember something added to an item would do that basically tearing a mold trying to get the item out making it useless.

Sulphur only inhibits curing of platinum cure silicone, it's fine for tin cure. It doesn't cause it to stick, it just never fully cures on the surface of the part.

Several things inhibit platinum cure, I know Rustoleum high build primer in a rattle can is one. Ask me how I know...

Which is why I'm saying, "Hey you can sell this dead horse if you use some marketing" - works in the UK ;)

RE: preventing recasting. Go read up on how successful DRM (copy protection) has been for software and other digital content. Then just give up on the idea of "blocking" recasts because someone will figure out how to get around it in a very short time.

This is really big, I think. As someone who is slowly joining the world of prop making, I can't tell you enough how much influence the prop makers who already do this have already had on me. When I see Volpin or Punished Props toss pictures up on Facebook, I want to support them. I want to give them as much money as I possibly can just so I can keep seeing amazing pictures. I could purchase a ****ty recast off Ebay, sure, but then I wouldn't be helping fev! make more awesome AC hidden blades. So thank you, Holtt, for finally pointing out the obvious.

I still think we can do these threads and shut the recasters down though. Nothing wrong with punishing them as we find them.

Precisely! Volpin's blog is what got me interested in this whole thing, and continues to be a wonderful source of knowledge and enlightenment. He shares his technique like crazy, with wonderful build photos and all. Seeing his stuff makes you want to either buy it, or if the price is too high, build it. He offers WAY more than a lump of plastic.

So here's something fun!

I sent him this message:

So I make something, I sell it to you, you mold it, you cast it, now you're selling copies of my work?

His response 1 hour later:

Dear pinskiperfect,

Hello there

I certainly don't remember buying anything from someone called pinskiperfect, I made this dredd badge and I have the production pictures of my making process to show. I drew all the pieces on CAD and laser cut them on my laser cutter... I apologize for any confusion!!

I of course want to see his pictures right? Here they are:

Wait a minute... Those tail feathers don't match the badge he is selling...

His response:

Dear pinskiperfect,

hello sir

im not sure what more i can tell you....what i do know is that i have NEVER purchased anything from you before!!

the eagle feathers in the progress pictures i sent you do not represent the FINISHED badge, this was more a work in progress and many elements of the badge were changed before i was happy, for example the beak of the eagle was changed many times and i played around with the vertical strips thinning them down once or twice before i was totally happy

i have not had much experience selling anything on ebay, and to tell you the truth i have had nothing but stress and to be honest am not enjoying the experience lol lol

right now, if you prefer, i will take this listing down from ebay???????

(i will also send you another picture where you can just make out the eagle feathers that ended up using)

anyway...hope this is acceptable to you...all the best

Now please tell me why he would take down an auction for a badge he obviously built...???

he's not very bright?

Geez, if he had a laser cutter and knew how to use it, why didn't he? It looks like he was well on his way to creating a decent badge without anyone else's work. Should've kept going.

I'm pretty sure those aren't actually his pictures. MrPinski, you should definately ask for more pictures. I'm pretty sure the comments will be something along the line: " Dude, I already removed the auction, what more do you want?!" :rolleyes

And he'd be right. If he's not selling them anymore, then what's the point in continuing it further? You wanted him to stop selling your stuff--he has. What more DO you want? A big teary public apology?

It's over. Move on, already.

So why not message him back and treat him like a fellow maker - ask if he is in any forums, etc. Surely whoever made the stuff in the pictures is somewhat aware of online communities and maybe participates, or has a blog, etc. If he is, welcome him to the community. If not, well then you've called his bluff.
