Sneak Peek - 1:1 Schwarzenegger sculpt

I've recently started a likeness of Arnie for a collector in Spain who owns a jacket from Commando, and I wanted to share these wip pictures. I'm very excited about this project because I've always wanted to make a silicone Arnie bust! Still early stages though so you need a little imagination at the moment. :cool

Thanks for looking and hopefully I'll have some updates soon!

Steve.

Looking real good there. Personally I would push in the eyes towards the nose by about a ½ centimeter on both sides.

Otherwise... the likeness is definitely showing, even at this early stage! :thumbsup

Looking at your technic I think you may have accidentally descovered a very unique style that you could explore further... I love the blockiness of the way in which you've sculpted this... Why not mold it as it is... This is a work of Art as it stands! Cast it in a bronzes resin:thumbsup

I kinda agree. I think it's always cooler to see a scuplture that is NOT necessarily a spot on sculpt rather an inerpretation of a person or thing. I think it looks sweet!!:thumbsup

Yeah, I have to agree too ... as a sculpture in such a rough stage its a really impressive looking piece. I'd display it as is! :)

A wonderful start however. I hope you keep us updated on its progress.

Agreed! Artistic appeal to the eye just the way it is.

excellent start !

I agree with nohumorman about the distance between the eyes
It seems to be a very hard clay .. maybe too hard ?

Thanks alot everyone! :)

I know what you all mean about the blocking technique. I like the way it looks at the moment also, and hopefully one day I'll get a bronze casting done of something at this stage.

And the distance between the eyes is proportionally correct so, if they look a little far appart at the moment, once I've defined the areas around them (the brow, bridge of the nose etc.) the distance should make more sense. Its actually one of his more defining features.

Steve.

God. That is stunning, even at this early stage.

Is it a one off or a possible run?

Well done and keep us posted!

Steve

We'll have to wait and see about that...;)

Thanks for the kind words, and I look forward to seein your T2 bust also :thumbsup

First off, wilysteve, what an outstanding start on this sculpt! :thumbsup Can't wait to see it finished.

I would suggest, though, that you heed the advice you're receiving about the eyes. At least experiment moving them in to see how it looks then in comparison. (Perhaps you've already done this.) Because, to be frank, they don't just look a little far apart, that you pick up on only after several seconds of viewing; but rather, they look way too far apart, and it jumped out at me the moment I saw the sculpt for the first time (as well as every time since). I'm guessing the others who have commented on it made their observation of it just as quickly, and just as consistently. FWIW, it appears, especially, that Arnie's right eye is too far from the nose bridge.

Having said all that, I've done some sculpting in my life, and I know just what you're saying about how "appearances" can be misleading, when a face is not fully fleshed out. I also know that photos sometimes be deceiving. But photos can also be most revealing at times. And in this case I think the photos are clearly suggesting that you narrow the gap between the eyes.

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck, and fantastic start!

Thanks for the crits Wook, every day is a learning curve. But if theres one thing that I've learnt to make sure of, its the measurements. I don't want to start sounding stubborn or unappreciative, but to reiterate a point I made in my previous post about the eyes - if the measurement between the eyes is wrong then the whole thing would look wrong, not just the eyes. The first measurement you take is from the eyes, so if you get that measurement too big then the rest of the face would simply end up overscaled but the eyes would still be in the proportion. I'm probably not explaining myself brilliantly, but I can't think how else to word it. Also with sculpting, often the answer to a problem is not as literal as say moving the eyes inwards. More often than not its a case of widening the nose and building up other areas that you wouldn't necessarily think of doing straight away. So to solve a problem with the eyes, you might add clay to the nose etc.

I do appreciate everyone trying to help though :cool

Heres a little update:

Thanks again,

Okay wilysteve, I agree: if the eyes are where you want them, then build everything else around the eyes to bring the entire head into true proprotions and dimensions. No more backseat sculpting from me. :lol (I am curious, though about Arnie's eyes...what is the distance between the two pupils on your sculpt?)

The distance between Arnies pupils is a whopping 76mm!! The average is 65 :confused

Thanks alot Thomas!
Who knows, maybe one day I'll make a battle damaged T3 version ;)

Cheers,
Steve.

Uh...wilysteve...

...listen mate, it's obvious, after looking a photo of Arnold, that you're a rank amateur and don't know what the hell you're doing.

But good luck with your "sculpt". :rolleyes

Damn it!! Where were you when I was searching for reference material?! That picture is the exact expression I was going for too. But even if it means starting over, I'm gonna get that face! :lol
