Small Soldiers Brick Bazooka replica for my son

I would suggest giving the resin pieces a sanding with a fine grade sandpaper it want prevent the paint from wearing off with use but it will prevent the paint from chipping off

Well, today was kind of an hour of truth. I made a first cast of Butch's head in order to paint him and thus see how close he is to the original... now I see how far off he is... It hurts when you find out that you were full of arrogance when you thought you could make replicas from toys that one of the greatest special effects team has created. While they could sculpt and paint puppets that really looked alive, I now see when I compare the stunt head of Kip (which wasn't even as high end as the hero puppets) with my cast... worlds apart...

I will take a break now since for the first time it looks like I have bitten off more than I could chew (now I'm even using words of Frank Sinatra... there's the arrogance again...:) ). There are so many things I don't like even about the sculpts already that I don't know yet how to come to a level where I am happy with them...
This is by the way no "fishing for compliments" expedition, I just want to be honest to those who await updates. They may come, but for the moment, I'm done. When I feel joy again working on these little guys, I might finish them, but for now, I'm good... I need to work on my sculpting skills in order to make a face that looks alive for the coloring, I need to get the basics first... obviously. Making molds from a screen used prop is one thing (we might even call it recasting, which is why I am not at all proud of the new clay master...), but creating something from scratch and make it look like something great, that's something else entirely... and today, I have definitely learnt my lesson in humbleness...

All the best

Florian

Hey my friend, do not be discouraged. I for one love your work as I'm sure many others do but I understand what you are saying. Please don't consider this a defeat because it is not. I look forward to any updates, and when you're ready to start back up against I'll be there following along. Sometimes we need to step back and look at things differently but bounce back. I wish you the best and feel free to message me whenever you like

I'd be proud to own a cast of your butch sculpt

Just came across a guy who owns a hero puppet of butch on Facebook. Maybe he'll be open to sending us hi res images and measurements =) I'll keep you posted my friend FB_IMG_1463438824873.jpg

I see nothing wrong with Butch. I honestly think you should stick to recreating one character at a time. When you start doing multiple you put more pressure on yourself and can get easily frustrated that things aren't coming together as quick as you would like. Focus on one project at a time and i promise the results will be amazing!

Butch looks great please don't quite on us your doing such an amazing job on creating these figures.your figures is the most detailed out of everybody on this site I believe. I even doubt that the people at Stan Winston Studios can recreate their figures exactly without pulling them from the original mold

Hey Bubba!

Great work!
Did some major work on Nick until now. Changed the shoulder joints to the big ones, the small ones of Kip, Link and Chip didn't work. He has their upper and lower arms and hands though... It's all still rough, and I used one of my boys party straws for the pipe bombs on Nick's left arm. They are only prototypes, don't worry :) Its slowly working... Need those grenades, however. The rest I pretty much have. For the joints, I think I have finally found a solution: Magnetic ball joints... that seems to work the best. And it will allow exchanging expression heads and different hands, i.e. weapon holding open hands and fists...Nick front new.jpgNick new left.jpgNick right new.jpg

Fantastic :)

Just found out what the biggest issue with Butch's head is: The eyes are kind of to flat and the lower lids too small. Easy, just dig those eye balls out, place them correctly and reshape everything - we all know the eyes are the EASIEST part in a head... arrrgll...

I think you are right on the money as far as the fix goes, cant wait to see more updates :)

I would use some ball bearings that are the right size for his eyes and use them that way you do not have to worry about the eyes being shaped oddly shaped

My god.
I can not believe that this is a thing!
My man, you are a fricken god with this!
I'm watching my childhood come to life before my eyes. I definitely will be buying a major chip when I can if not the whole commando elite.

Well, today I took a leap of faith: I purchased neodym magnets (https://www.supermagnete.ch/magnetkugeln-neodym, and yes, I know it's in German...). All that is left is something like the counterparts in metall. In case any of you knows where I can find metal socket joints that will fit, this is finally going to happen. If this works, everything will freaking rock. We will have the solution for exchangable heads, hands and whatnot. So EVERYONE who wants to see this come to life, now is the time for your appreciated input. The more links I get, the faster I can do this. The magnets have the following diameters: 5mm, 8mm and 10mm (0.19 inch, 0.31 inch, 0.39 inch). The magnets hold 400 grams, 900 grams and 1500 grams. However, since the gravity will pull on the arms and legs, we have to make the arm or leg weight times 6 so it's going to stick. So let's do this guys!!!

Oh yea! ill start looking around as well. im closing in on completing the boxes soon, with the approval of craig jablonski. cant wait to see more progress

Butch gun 2.jpgButch gun 3.jpgButh gun 1.jpgDogtags 1.jpgDogtags 2.jpgSo Butch's gun has been printed and a friend made the dog tags... both needs to be refurbished still. I'm looking at how to refine 3d prints...
