I spent a great evening early this week listening to Steve Allen (Jim Henson Creature Shop and many others) talk about his long career in Film and TV. He's a modelmaker, puppeteer and prop maker. He worked on Fraggle Rock, on Labyrinth - on Sir Didymus among others and provided models for Lucasfilm when in pre-production for The Phantom Menace.
The highlight for me though was a section of bumpy black/green latex about 8" square. This is probably the last surviving piece of Jabba The Hutt's skin from ROTJ! It was given to Steve by Toby Philpott - one of Jabba's puppeteers - at the end of production and Steve has kept it in his freezer to try and halt it's decomposition ever since. That's why I had to have gloves on to handle it.
Behind us you can see some of Steve's fraggles (the Kermit is his own). The snowspeeder was one of the models built as inspiration for The Phantom Menace meetings. It's beautiful, built from original plans and very unusually was returned to Steve instead of being archived at The Ranch.
Quite a night overall.
