Silicone casts

I'm currently sculpting a human head for a project -rather than make the casts from resin or latex, I have it in mind to try my hand at a silicone cast, as I've been very impressed by the lifelike quality of the material when others have used it.

I have few questions; in order to mold and cast in silicone, I would need to make a hard (ie plaster) mold of my sculpt, as if casting in latex?

Secondly, I take it that people use a pre-coloured silicone (in this case, human skin)?

Are there any tips, tricks or pitfalls I should be aware of if I go down this route? I don't want to wreck my sculpt by starting the process blindfolded...

Thanks,

Al

I like making the detail mold layer with a brush-on plastic (usually shellshock) with a hard mother mold. Silicone can then be cast in the mold easily with all detail captured.

Dependant on the silicone you decide to use it can be pre coloured (intrinsic) with oil paints and/or flocking which gives a nice realistic effect. Let me knwo what silicone you end up using and i'll send through some tips
