'Shawshank' rock hammer -

Could the hammer face have been broken and then ground down? The face does not appear to be flat/right-angled. It appears to be slanted.

I might just have a go with resin. I am not after a real hammer to do anything but reside in a Bible... Ya know? :lol

If someone is going to machine the hammer head, these dimensions might help. These are the dimensions of the cutout, so the hammer will be a little smaller of course.

I found a lot of those as well. Problem is the bottom of the hammer has no small square handle area to it. Now, might be able to grind one in, but that is a ton of work.

IIRC, there are no actual shots with the hammer in the Bible in the movie right? I know this is a prop for the shelf at home, but is that cutout the same as the hammer in the shots?

Once I get the Bible in the mail Ill do a full size template with the screen cap. Ill then be able to transfer that to the clay and make a hammer head that will fit in that hole. May be different looking than the two pictured above. That will check scale as well.

15 minutes with some oil clay rendered me this. Pretty good start. Little bit of pink goo and some 2 part resin and wham... Damn cool prop hammer. :love Bet I can find a steak knife or something to replicate the handle.

Some show that was on television this week had a small hammer used as a prop. I meant to make a note of it, but forgot to and can't remember what they called it. The didn't refer to it as a rock hammer, but it did resemble what was used.

Thanks guys. :)

Ill look into it after I get the final sculpt all squared away. I would like to find the real hammer, or at least one that is close enough to grind into shape. I think a resin one is a good second choice if the first doesn't pan out.

Anyone have a hires screen grab? I only have a VHS copy of the movie... Guess its time to upgrade huh.

Once I get a drawing made, Ill post a full page sized one.

Looks like the 2 handles are different. maybe the original broke in 20 years and he fabricated a replacement

I think it's a reshaped Magnetic Upholsters Hammer. Metal head was reshaped. Original handle reshaped and stained. Pins added for cosmetic effect.
