Here are some pics of my current project, the Moebius Models small 1/350 scale Seaview from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. You can see earlier progress pics in threads over on SSM, HT, and RI. The control room, sail, tail fin lights, bow and ventral search lights, and Flying Sub hangar all light up with small Christmas tree LED's I got at Target. I used the excellent PE set from ParaGrafix on this kit and scratched new flat bow windows from .010 clear styrene sheet so almost every control room detail is visible with no distortion. Here's an earlier pic of the control room lit up:
These are pics I took over the weekend as she looked after a coat of flat black enamel which serves as a light blocking coat and as a basis for pre-shading. The windows are now framed to represent the 8 foot filming model.
I think it looks pretty badass in black myself; my wife thinks it gives the Seaview a stealthy look:
This detail pic of the sail shows the scratched radar antenna I built using brass rod and aluminum tubing. I'd lost the original kit mast but, luckily, the PE set included two versions of the radar antenna to choose from so I had a backup. I like my new version even better than the original. You can also see the reworked missile deck (the kit came with 20 missile tubes like the 17 foot studio model had) with PE cleats and 16 missile tubes like the 8 foot studio model. You can see where I added an escape hatch just behind the sail. in place of 4 missile hatches. I also removed the remaining molded on kit missle hatches (too much paint and sanding had softened the details too much) and punched out new ones using a hole punch and thin sheet styrene. Turned out pretty good I think:
Under the bow. The doors are held in with vinyl magnetc strips along the sides:
I have a tiny Flying Sub I purchased online from Monkey Works which is just about finished. It will attach to the roof of the bay using a rare earth magnet glued to the roof of the hangar bay which will stick to a metal washer glued to the top of the Flying Sub. Fishing lines will allow the Flying Sub to hang suspended below the Seaview with the doors removed:
Under the stern tubes. You can see the PE rudder tie rods and ventral drain holes clearly here:
More to come. Comments welcome!
