Scratchbuilt 1:350 USS Reliant

Re: WIP 1:350 USS Reliant I'm building for a friend

Under these circumstances, would making a cast of the PL primary hull be taboo? Since the goal is an entirely different ship?

I would say that from a practicality standpoint, it isn't worth it to cast a PL saucer for a one off. The amount of resin and RTV needed would easily exceed the price of one or two PL kits, not to mention the trial and error of coming up with a saucer that is bubble free and hollow to allow for lights. Plus, then you have to use either epoxy or CA to bond it with the plasticard assemblies when plastic weld glues would work fine if it were in styrene. Only way to potentially make it work would be to do a few saucers, but then you get more into the darker side of that "gray" area as I see it.

Getting back on topic, this is looking incredible. I can see you've already done a ton of work on this and the results are just fabulous! I am curious as to how big the studio scale Reliant model built was as at a glance, this one could be getting close to that size.

Outstanding work so far! The Miranda class (though perhaps overused in TNG/DS9) is one of my favorites.

If you check out Steve Neill's Youtube videos, he's currently working on a Reliant, and picked up a nifty board that lets him duplicate torpedo launches. Might be something to look into.

I wired up all the torp tubes long, long ago.....maybe on a future build!

I'm amazed at how clean you got those windows. :thumbsup

They're always difficult for me.

Incredible! I look forward to your updates.

Strange I haven't seen a 1/350 Reliant bash yet, it's looking great!

Hi Phil, thanks for the kind words.....the whole weird, dome/bullet on top of the torp bay thing was just sculpted from Milliput.

The one underneath was the body of a felt pen, nose cones from a Buccaneer's missiles, milliput and sheet styrene!

This is coming along very beautifully. Your scratch build parts look like kit parts. Excellent job! I would like to know what you used to make those windows.

I really love watching this refit builds and kit bashes. This one is no exception-- great job so far!

Thank you, i used a 2mm or a 3 mm drill bit for the circular ports....i used the same drill bit for either side of the eliptical ones and just cut/carved the rest out.....needle files were my friend!

I filled the holes with a polyester resin, which took about a week to cure....(first time for everything!) Then wet sanded them flush.....

Hey Rich, did you scribe those lines onto that panel yourself? If so, how'd you go about it? Used a ruler and X-acto knife, or some other technique?

Sorry for sounding like a broken record, but where did you get the appropriately sized schematics in order to start this build in the first place? Did you find them somewhere online?

They'd look like a good set to work from.

Hi Eric!

I scribed the lines with a steel ruler and an engineers scribing tool.....it's basically a long pen shaped thing wih a sharp conical point. You get them on amazon for a few quid!

The plans i used were these.......i really hope it's ok to repost these.....the details aren't quite right and there's one or two other things that are wrong, but these plans are a very good basis for a build as most of the actual shapes are correct....

I don't think it's inappropriate for you to show your references. Most people willing to post blueprints on the internet WANT to share them with others. So you are honoring that artist's work by using his/her image as reference. I am using the c-gus files for my 1:350 scale Enterprise-C. I think I got them from ex-astris scientia? Anyway, they were available for download as a *pdf. I couldn't ask for a better reference! :) I am really loving your work, btw. The Reliant was the first real break-away the "traditional" star-ship. I just wish you making copies! :)
