Scratch built Mjolnir

I got bit by the Mjolnir bug. Here's some progress pics so far.

The handle is a PVC pipe. The ribs are cut from a larger diameter PVC pipe and slid onto the handle. The pommel is made from various PVC parts, joined and sanded to shape.

All the leather handle rings were cut and fit for each ring of the handle. Each one is a tiny bit different.

The body of the hammer is built up out of Sintra and styrene. Pretty simple build.

The capstone and the sidepanel with the scroll work were designed in Adobe Illustrator, uploaded to Tinkercad and extruded, then uploaded to Shapeways for printing.

For the two "faces" of the hammer I molded and cast 4 duplicates of the side panel. These were then built into a frame and filled with liquid resin the create the face. This master is currently in a mold that is drying.

You should fill the head with concrete or lead and make it extremely heavy. When you have guests over you should see if they are worthy enough to lift it! lol

Nice work! Looking forward to seeing it finished. Never worked with styrene before. I'm on the 3rd incarnation of Mjolnir now, always looking for ways of making it look more authentic. First one was a real junk build out of bits of foam and fibre tape, more like a LARP weapon than a replica. Second was converted from a plastic toy, came out pretty well but could be better, and now I'm working on a 3D printed kit build.

Thanks, I should also say that some of the details –specifically the handle – are a bit of a homogenization of all the various versions. I did research them all, then decided on design choices I preferred. So, not totally accurate to one specific one. But honestly, It's odd that Mjolnir changed as much as it did between films. So, I felt at liberty to tweak the handle design myself and consider it "within canon" of the spirit of Mjolnir.

The build is complete and I shot it with primer. Man, the scroll work on the ends were brutal to pull molds from. All those tiny spaces want to pull my rubber mold apart. I managed to get the two necessary casts out of it before the mold was shot.

I also did a final test fit of the leather before I go to paint. Fits like a glove I think.

For paint I think I'm going with my favorite Design Master Modern Metals Champaign Silver. This is the same silver I used for my Rocketeer Rocketpack. It's beautiful and has a tiny hint of gold that makes it look like a vintage item. Perfect for Mjolnir I think. Plus the silver doesn't rub off on your hands and doesn't need a clear coat. Although I plan on doing a bit of weathering to it.

Here's the finished hammer. Quick recap: It was built primarily with plastic board called Styrene and PVC tube. The scroll work on the ends and capstone are also accurate to the real movie prop. They were designed in 3D software and sent to shape ways.com. The handle is wrapped in real leather. The paint finish is a bunch of layers of weathering to get that "ancient" look. The whole thing is surprisingly heavy. But I can lift it, because I am worthy.

Thank you! I took my dimensions from measurements I found online. Now, from source to source there were minor differences, so take mine with a grain of salt:

Hammer body is 135mm x 135mm x 225mm
Handle is 300mm long
