Satele Shan Lightsaber

Simply amazing work? Do you think you can make another one and sell it? I am dying to have one but I don't have a lot of time to make one. =( If you can make another one that would be great

The way you worked around your tool limitations and made something that looks like it came out of a machine shop is an example of why this forum is great. The creativity and ingenuity never fail to astound me.

Update time!

Even though I had the saber functioning at CVI, the electronics had a couple of serious issues. First, my attempt to do a custom sound scheme for my wife (which was beyond anything that the "commercial" cards could handle on their own) failed miserably and the result was that Holly had no sound. Second, as CVI progressed, the LEDs continued to get dimmer as the transistor array I was using fried.

I've now completed a complete rebuild of the electronics. The initial version had a small connector tube that was intended to be a sound chamber, and the remainder of the electronics/batteries slid into either side of the hilt. The new version has a full stainless steel chassis that holds batteries, electronics, speaker, and crystal.

To get everything to fit (Nano Biscotte, Arduino Pro Mini, transistor array, and three constant current LED drivers + extras) I needed to etch a couple of PCBs.

After waaay too much wiring/soldering, everything was in place and working.

Here's a quick video (though I apologize for the quality) showing "Moon River" playing when the NB/Arduino are brought out of deep sleep, "Indiana Jones Theme" leading into the ignition sound, and Toto's "Africa" leading into the retraction sound.

That is awesome! Love the WheelJack BTW. :thumbsup

Avolow.

I agree with Cayman!

And have to ask... How many tools/blades/bits got destroyed in the process???

Either way, this is gorgeous and a testament to true craftsmanship.

I'm very impressed.

Thanks everyone! I actually don't think I had any tools/blades/bits that died in this process, though it took a LOT of time. Oh, I did go through quite a few dremel cut off wheels while making the chassis piece, though I view those as disposable anyway, like sandpaper.

Oh, and since this build I've gotten some new tools. I just (as in today) put a revised version of Satele's saber in the mail and will post a thread with details and pics next week once it's delivered. :)

Are you building them to order now? :D

Well, the one I just sent off is Abby's and it took me about 9 months to finish (though I'll admit there were some significant life bits that extended that time). It was a test for me to see how much, if any, commission work I wanted to do since I was really inspired seeing her Satele costume at CVI. I think I'll try to catch up on my personal backlog of projects before deciding if I want to do more, though at least I have a good estimate of how much time the build took. :)

Spectacular!! 9 months is reasonable for this beauty I think! Well if you do venture to it, you know you don't have to look far for takers! :p

Now I'm jealous of Abby lol
