Rubies Supreme Stormtrooper

To my other question, is the FX trooper set really that bad? It looks alright to me, and its half the price of the new Rubies. Li ke I said, I'm 6'1 so I'm wondering if perhaps I'd avoid the bobble head look.
Regardless of my personal distaste for the FX armor it is nevertheless a nice set of armor - you'll never convince me on the helmet though... not even the new one - so I would definitely advice, if you go for a FX to get a screen accurate helmet... but then you're reaching the value of the screen armors anyway so could just as well buy one of those.

Those more seasoned can probably advice you even better regarding size and what looks good up to which size, etc.

I'd still wait and see what this Rubies armor is for a creature... though... not high expectations... :rolleyes

When I started my Vader suit, I was going to get the rubies, and a mod it. My wife said, and I quote 'If you're going to do it, do it RIGHT.' So.. No rubies. And I have a better suit for it. I have seen well modded and done rubies, so it certainly can be done, but I think people are better off starting from scratch.

Thanks for that!!

And No HumorMan - I guess I agree too.:) There is something to be said for a complete "out of the box, ready to Sith-choke" Vader costume.

Onigiri - you have to realize that the common tie that binds us Vader costumers together is our enjoyment of that hobby. While many of you knew of the RPF and the nuanaces of the Vader costume, others like me did not - and bought the Rubies. And then we found out about its shortcomings. And also took a lot of heat from some seasoned Vaders who really tended to disparage what we had spent our hard erned money on. Hindsight being 20/20, yes I would have done things as you say if I had known. But I've worked hard at mine and I'm justifiably proud of it.

So thanks for your supportive comments.:thumbsup

I have to say that having had a better look at this I think the new Rubies costume could actually turn out quite nice.

In the photo theyve used a Don Post fiberglass deluxe helmet so that will change for the final version but helmet-aside I think the armour looks great and certainly an improvement over the Bobblehead FX.

Without seeing the final version its clearly hard to tell but in producing fully licensed armour for the first time, Rubies' move could have a significant affect on the market - and will certainly bringing new people into the hobby.

I'm just loading some new pics up now.

Cheers

Guys, Rubies sent me some more info and a better pic this afternoon so I've updated my site.

It looks like theyve used a Don Post Fiberglass Deluxe helmet for the photoshoot, although the armour does look impressive.

I've "adjusted" the original photo to remove the black area around the neck to give a better look. I dont think the model was wearing it correctly!

Here's a close up of the chest/abs

Detail looks good, from these pics the prototype looks like ABS

Are those close-ups the original resolution or are they still shrunk down? I'd like to see a fullsize version of the pic uploaded somewhere, even if your watermark covers half the damned thing!

Wow - great info guys. Thank you. Jez, the Rubies actually looks good to me. Yes, I know its a prototype and that the final product may be different.

I'm quite surprised at the low opinions of the FX armor. Although the pics of it I have seen look good, I am new to this so I trust that you all know what you are talking about. Could someone tell me what are the issues with the FX? Is it mostly the helmet being too big? If so, then a budget MR lid matched with an FX armor set might be a good option for me.

Two other questions:

1. How much would a reasonably accurate full set of stormtrooper armor and a helmet cost me?

2. When is the Rubies expected to be available? If it is as good as some think it may be, then it may be well worth considering.

Let's hope that Rubies has learned not to repeat the mistakes they made with their Supreme Vader costume.

thanks again fellas,

Huzz

in my opinion, the biggest thing the FX armor has going against it is the scale... the proportions of the pieces are all off (head being the worst). but for larger folk, that's a good thing.

the fx chest is a lot bigger. the helmet is huge. the arms and legs all lack the contours of the more accurate stuff... basically the more you look at them, the more different they appear.

The "crappiness" of the suit?

Gee.

Well, I too have a Rubies Supreme Vader suit. Since buying it, I've added an MR Vader lid, Porty chest box, SA ROTS gloves and ROTS aluminum buckle, ABS shins and fabricated my own screen accurate ROTS armor chain.

I've retained the bits of the costume that are accurate. And I may re-do my Rubies chest box as that piece is in fact more accurate than any fan-made ROTS chest box.

So, I'd say my modified Rubies Vader is far from "crappy". When I finally finish it by repainting the chest armor, I'd put it up against any ROTS Vader. And when I wore it this past Halloween, I got more than my fair share of great reactions.

So yeah, I have brass ones . Here's a guy with a Rubies suit and an MR lid:

Mine will look every bit as good as that. So, based on this guy's work alone, further criticisms against modified Rubies Vader costumes are clearly completely groundless. Jealous, anyone?

Getting back a bit closer to the topic of this thread, concerning the FX trooper costumes, what are the issues with them? I'm 6'1. Would I look like a bobble head in that costume? They look nice in the eBay listings and the price is quite good - less than half of the likely price of the Rubies trooper.

Great Vader...I have the same one...I only need an update for my Chestbox and the beltbuckle.Oh,and I need the right armor chain. Can you send me a PN,were I can buy the right chain and the belt buckle?

For me it's personal preference. I rarely spend time considering buying non-accurate stuff and therefore stuff like the FX - which in itself is a good product from what I've heard - is deemed not worth my time - buying-wise.

I'm a screen accurate nut and so I look for and advice on screen accurate items - or at least as accurate as possible.

~ $850, but you'd have to assemble it yourself.

2. When is the Rubies expected to be available? If it is as good as some think it may be, then it may be well worth considering.
Well, if they keep the standard of this prototype image and choose a good type of plastic for the armor, then it could be worth it. Also seems that it comes: ready to wear! which kind of makes the price more favorable compared to a similarly priced set of accurate fan armor, which you have to trim and assemble and sometimes even paint yourself.

How can Rubies AND Museum Replicas both have LFL licenses for high end Stormtrooper Armour? :confused
Who are these Museum Replicas and what are their plans for armor?

Thanks very much, NoHumorMan!

(Where did that internet name come from I wonder? :lol)

What would you think of my idea of matching up a budget MR lid (which appears to be getting rave reviews here on the thread for that) - with a set of FX armor?

I've seen that the armor can be bought without the helmet. And since I'm 6'1, would the proportion issues of the FX be minimal for someone my height?

And I'm still wondering - what is inaccurate about the FX?

Thanks guys. I'm sorry to be a pest. I'm just wanting to do the research up front before the purchase. Unlike what i did with my Vader. Although many dollars later, that is coming together nicely.....

I can't tell jokes. :)

Honestly, I can't really give an opinion on that as I have never seen that combination, so I wouldn't know if it looked stupid.

It is an old over-sized fan sculpt from a time when accurate armor was extremely hard to get.

Thanks guys. I'm sorry to be a pest. I'm just wanting to do the research up front before the purchase. Unlike what i did with my Vader. Although many dollars later, that is coming together nicely.....
No worries... better ask questions before spending the dollars and then get told later what you should have done, imo.

Two companies? That is weird.

I guess though we get to pick from the company making the best product.

Thanks for the info guys!

The FX helmet may be oversized on some, but it's the right size for me. I once bought an "accurate" helmet, but it wouldn't fit over my head. So I'm quite happy with my FX suit. Plus most people in the real world think it looks great, so the tiny minority of people who can't resist insulting it come off a bit sad to me. You know, "get over it" and all.

So, because I don't like how it looks, I'm insulting if I say so? :confused
