Rubies Supreme Stormtrooper

Hell I'm impressed. I figured Rubies would do a MUCH worse job on it. Considering that suit is better than 99% of the 501st I've seen in person, well, beggars can't be choosers.
It's time this finally got done, perfect or not. Now we see what direction licensed armor will go: Forward!!!
For the average consumer ST armor has been elusive; without knowing legion people or knowing about these boards many fans never get the chance to suit up. Now they have it, and while they too will winge on about the look of it, at least they have the option.
I've seen less accurate helmets, even on this forum:lol. I'd say this is probably the best item Rubies have managed so far, Vader potential notwithstanding.
And as mentioned above, if the bobbleheads are ok for trooping, I dare the pot to call the kettle black:thumbsup

Humm, I have mixed feelings about it. For the price, I don't think it's worth it at all. I managed to get a TE suit for that price some time ago. I think the neck is dropped down too deep. It gives it that "wife beater" look. I know the edge trim is visible on the ROTJ suit, it looks a bit odd to me, like baby proofing or something.

Having a really good suit, I think I'm biased, and seeing this, the Rubies suit looks a bit cheap. I know I can't be very specific on what's cheap looking about it, but you just know somethings off. Just like when someone wears an FX suit, someone unfamiliar with it will say "Wow, a Stormtrooper" when I just giggle :) Knowing the differences.

I'm sure when more production shots are released, we'll be able to see some of the liberties they took to make this a mass produced piece, instead of the "tailored" look of the movie suits. It takes a bit to get into, not that I can't put my armor on myself, but I'm sure Rubies made some changes to make it more "wearable" as a costume, and, in the process, made it look a bit off in certain areas.

So, for the price.... not worth it to me, but maybe for the people who want something they can put on out of the box and run around in...

if it looks that good in reality, i think it's great.

not many folks do rotj style armor, so it's sorta cool just for that.

next, $800 isn't bad at all really. remember that we're taking for granted the relative complexity of assembling a kit. i've seen folks agonize over how to glue 2 things to each other!

i paid about that for my AP kit, which i then had to trim, sand and assemble. and buy the body suit and gloves, which i'm assuming this will include.

i'm holding off on any real judgement until i see one, but if it looks like that for real, and if it follows the vader trend and can be bought for 2/3 - 1/2 that price... well, at that rate i'd seriously think about taking that over an fx suit.

I like it. Of course I know next to nothing about Stormtroopers, but it looks pretty good to me. The price is their suggested retail price and much like the Vader Supreme, you'll find it a lot cheaper.

The thing is though, is that the actual costume or is it a picture of a picture of the screen used costume? Rubies' use of the screen used suit pics for their Supreme Vader was complete false advertising.

I wanted to sue.

That's because it's an ROTJ suit. ROTJ have a lip on the chest plate, ab plate and cod area as well as the back plate and butt plate. You will also notice the upside down buttons on the ab plate which tells you it is an ROTJ.

Some of the parts look nice, but others are way off... I expect it to be way off in the final product

THat suit is made of felxible material.
It will not be of abs armor. It will fold like the stuntsuits.

Everything will look good on promoshots.. But i doubt the final quality is satisfactory to any of our standards. Its sad they have to make something like this because the price is way to high and quality far to low.

Why did they not make a child costume of this standard. I whould have bought it for a child but i never whould wear a vinyl armor costume.

What i belive the 501st strive for is that they want people to feel. OH That is a stormtrooper not... OH thats a guy dressed in stormtrooper.

LFL did a bad move with this. They are narrowing the string and by doing this their best suppoerters and comercial factor 501st will have allot of people destroying the rep. rather than actually making it good.

TMP,
I disagree. I think rubies has a long run with making LFL money. This will sell to the masses and I will bet that it will be made of flexible plastic with lots of expandable strapping to that larger folks can squeeze into it. It looks like it was cast off of a tour suit......and left in the sun. I love my TE.

I feel somewhat responsible for this suit...lol
A couple of years ago at Comic Con I had a long discussion with the folks at Rubies re: doing a Stormtrooper Suit. They indicated that it would be great but that it wasnt practical to do vacuum forming and the FX seemed to have that wrapped up anyway. I suggested to them that they do it in a flexible semi rigid vinyl like the walk around suits and tweak it to fit a broader size range. I kid you not we had this discussion and the gentleman (whose name now escapes me) was very receptive to the idea. Its kind of eerie to think someone might have actually listened...in any case, in spite of the naysayers, Rubies did a remarkable job with the Vader condisering it is a mass produced item. If we didnt have resources to build better on our own we would have ALL been all over that. We dont know how good or bad the trooper is going to be yet but in all likliehood it will price out on Ebay in teh $500 range, assembled w/bodysuit. Not too shabby compared to the ALSO innacurate FX suit.

Helmet wise I believe theyve reused the Don Post Deluxe/Classic Action mould, which makes me wonder if the whole armour will be a kind of vinyl.

Seriously. Do you think George Lucas will have troopers of this costume on his events or 501st cannon costumes?

I know what he will chose.

tbh I dont think Lucas gives a toss what they wear!

However I'm sure LFL marketing would in an instant go for fully licensed armour even if it looked like this.....

aaah, the sculpting joy of cardboard

Does the release of this even matter? Do you guys think that the folks that want TK armo(u)r already spent the money?

I think it might be too little too late to be quite honest.

The thing with rubies costumes like this is that it's a one stop shop. You buy the supreme vader costume and you have a whole costume, you buy the storm trooper costume and you have a whole storm trooper costume. I've been putting a Boba fett costume together, I have about $800 in it and don't even hae half the costume. I don't think "trooping" was their main point and focus with this just more or less to make some one think they havea cool costume at a halloween party

.... or if it hurts it with swarms of "impersonators" who will try to charge money for appearances or perform other acts that don't respect the LFL property.

So the 501st is the be all and end all? They do nothing to stop recasting. If a particular branch doesn't have enough real 'troopers', they make them up, just to bolster the ranks. So 501st members should get off their "High Horse"

There are groups out there who have no affiliation with LFL sanctioned drones. They aren't what you call "impersonators" and don't charge $$ for appearances. Just a group of SW fans who simply don't want too be associated with the 501st (all the B-S, Ego's & backstabbing) that goes along with it.

Take the group of 'muppets' in NZ501st for example. They had to make up a fictitious member, by the name of "Memphis Raynes", just to fill their meager ranks for a while.:lol:lol

AMEN BROTHER!

As much disdain as some of us have for the 501st, let's not bring that to this thread. It's about the costume, which no one has seen yet. Also, the 501st may have a few bad apples, but they DO do a lot of good, if the press they get is true. I won't lump the whole organization as horrid because of a few jerkoffs.

That said, I wonder if we can hold back on judgment 'til we actually SEE the actual costume. The pic posted, the helmet just looks small. That is quite a turn from the bobblehead trooper helmets we see with the FX suits.
