Round2 Acquires Star Wars License

It's 1:32 scale... is that studio scale for a TIE? Anyway, I've been watching HPIGuys Workshop for years, he has such an infectious approach to model building, he makes even the complex seem straightforward.
I don't own either, but some people have reported that the efx studio scale TIE and the MYC studio scale TIE are different sizes. The scales of the original studio models are debated because of inconsistencies between the models, live action sets, and the scale of the pilot figures. There is a difference between making a replica of the studio model and making a replica that the live action interior can reasonably fit in. Some interpretation id needed to make the interior set work with the model.

Wow. Watching that video, they really did a great job. It’d so big and those panels look great. I hope they sell a ton!

I don't know if this was mentioned before, but at Wonderfest they advertised photoetch for the cockpit interior - I hope it's not far behind the main kit release because I'd love to light the back cockpit walls

I just watched the rest of the video and again wow. The kit practically falls together. I’m getting one and I have SS TIE with Koolshade on the wall. This is a weekend build that will look great with very little effort. Well thought out and designed.

I’m pretty sure R2 has stated that the bomber will be 1/48, which will put it in scale with their alread-released TIE and interceptor kits. It would be insane to do a bomber in 1/32 and while an interceptor in 1/32 might be possible my guess is they’ll stick with the old MPC tool for Vader’s ship. I don’t think they’ve even considered a 1/32 X-wing yet which is kind of a no-brainer for this line but they have more or less eliminated a Y-wing as a possibility so there are obviously limits to what they’re willing to spend.

It definitely sounded like they were leaning in the direction of making the bomber in scale with the AMT TIEs. It seems like a no-brainer to make it Studio Scale, but it's not my call.

IIRC a Studio Scale Tie Bomber is actually pretty close to, if not, 1/48 scale anyway so that is close enough to the 1/51 scale of the AMT Tie

Every model for R2 is a gamble. There was a lot of interest in a 1/48 Y-wing but possibly R2 is saying it won’t happen because it doesn’t want to tip it’s hand to Revell, where they have a a lot more funds and more than likely can outdo them in accuracy and quality. I think it was a lesson learned with the Razor Crest.

Not sure about that. Publicly Jamie is citing the cost of tooling the Y-Wing has been quoted as being 3x the cost of other kits. That doing it would blow their entire years budget.

He mentioned possibly doing the Y-wing as some kind of crowd source funding or a 'club' like the 1/350 1701 kit.

I wasn’t aware of Jamie’s tooling comment. I guess crowdfunding could work, but tooling is 3 times the cost I wonder what a kit would cost. I guess that means a sandcrawler is out of the question as well.

Profit, I assume, would be the decision maker. If their current SW line with improved re-pops and the TIE make bushels of cash, it’s easier to convince the decision makers to increase the budget on the hopes of even more money.

I guess it is all the little bits and bobs on the Y-Wing.

There is a ton of piping and greeblies

I remember the Fine Molds Y-Wing had something like 130 parts which is a lot for it's size in 1/72. It took quite a while to put together. I think Bandai's had less parts, but still had a lot more than anything else it's size

I think Jamie wants to do a Sandcrawler, and I don't imagine it would have too many parts. It just has to wait in line.

Edit: The track parts are repeated and many could be done as multiple shots using the same tool, like the TIE wing panels.

This looks fantastic and I definitely want to get one with the photoetch to light the cockpit properly. I also have some files for 1/32 TIE Interceptor wings I could do a conversion with!

While I don't have a smaller re-popped TIE in front of me, just looking at a recent build-up video on YouTube that shows the new big 1/32 kit side by side with the re-tooled smaller "1/48" TIE, the smaller one looks to be roughly half as big or even a bit smaller. That means it's likely not really 1/48 scale but maybe closer to 1/64.

I also have not recently compared the TIE Interceptor snap kit to the MPC Vader's TIE, but if memory serves it is smaller. Thus, to me at least, it makes no sense to tool a new TIE bomber in scale with those smaller TIE kits. If they asked me, I'd say make it the size of the old MPC Vader's TIE. This would be studio-scale and a nice size. I agree that making it 1/32 would be pretty huge so it might not make a lot of sense.

I do hope we'll eventually get a DV TIE and TIE Interceptor in 1/32. Doing either shouldn't require making all new tooling as the existing 1/32 TIE parts could be integrated into the new kits (the same way Bandai did it).

The AMT TIE and MPC TIE Interceptor are in the same scale. In fact the re-release of the Interceptor uses the AMT TIEs fuselage. The AMT TIE's solar panels are around 6 inches tall.
