Round2 Acquires Star Wars License

I hope there will be an updated Vader TIE in the Studio Series line. It looks like the cockpit is smaller on the existing Vader kit. Shouldn't the details in the cockpit match the regular TIE? The current Vader kit cockpit looks quite a bit different.

The old MPC Vader TIE is out of proportio--the Bandai 1/72 is the only version of that design that looks right to me. But since R2 already updated it I’d be surprised if the completely redid it anytime soon. For the studio line I just hope they do an X-wing.

The AMT TIE and MPC TIE Interceptor are in the same scale. In fact the re-release of the Interceptor uses the AMT TIEs fuselage. The AMT TIE's solar panels are around 6 inches tall.

That would make them 1/3 studio-scale. If I'm doing the math right, and 3/4-SS = 1/32 scale then 1/3-SS = 1/72 scale. Certainly nowhere near 1/48.

I estimate the MPC Vader TIE to be roughly 1/2 Studio-Scale. It's been a while since I measured it though so that's going off memory.

I noticed the MPC Vader's TIE is stretched quite a bit horizontally. That makes it impossible to fix without retooling the entire main body, i.e. "ball and arms." Bandai does appear to have gotten it right. :)

How tall was the filming miniature TIE wing panel, anyway? I have this measure of an "ICONS" TIE, which I believe is supposed to be a replica Studio Scale model... but would be nice if someone who knows for certain could confirm.

Cheers!

Odd... I had the ICONS replica at 18-1/8"... Never measured one personally. Just took others' info as accurate. How much under 18" are we talkin'?

I'm not giving out dimensions to the mm. ;) Actual size depended on which film. For example, ESB models had different trim around the perimeter, making the wings slightly bigger.

An interceptor seemed like a no brainer. It would be a single spruce shot twice and using the same cockpit. Sounds like money in the bank. May sell more than the standard TIE even. May be wise to fast track it and get ahead of the 3D print!

I could be wrong, but I think measuring the height of the wings might not be the best way to figure out scale for a Tie Fighter

Sure, it can show how out of proportion the wings might be based on the studio model height/width, but I think the best part for determining scale based on the size of a person, is the diameter of the cockpit frame.

That seems to be uniform across most Tie Fighter variants as well as ESB vs ANH regular ties

When are these hitting the streets? I pre-ordered 2 from CultMan, but haven’t heard when they will be in stock.

It's supposed to be this summer, but as usual there may be delays because of demand. I'm thinking late summer to fall for local hobby stores. From what I've seen, I'm certain this will be a winner for R2 as I've heard little to nothing bad about this...all positive. The only thing that I can say is bad about this kit, is that there is no word about an adversary...for now. But this will obviously be a winner for R2 so it will be easy to convince the management to start working on something else in the same scale.

I emailed Round Two a couple of days ago to ask if they would possibly release the new TIE Fighter as a pre-assembled display model in future, as they did previously with the large pre-assembled Eagle Transporters.

As soon as they hopefully get back to me, I will let you know what their reply is.

I also think they have a winner here and an X-Wing of the same scale and quality would be as much so if they can bring it in at $100 or less especially, but I imagine it’ll be closer to 150. Any higher and I worry That might end the 32nd scale line. I’de really like to see a sequel X in this scale.

Revell did release a 1:29 X-wing. I wonder how those will be together.

For me, I think the most important thing is that R2 is making a real effort to base their newly-tooled kits on the filming miniatures. In the past, only FineMolds and Bandai seemed to go to great lengths in that regard. Accuracy is now paramount (within reason and budget of course), making the finished product much more authentic and less "toy like." I think that's a huge step forward and it makes a lot of sense given the changes in the target market. After all, very few youngsters are into models these days and it's now mostly middle-aged adults who were kids when the original films first came out.
