Round2 Acquires Star Wars License

LadyFerry (how fun!), your memory is spot-on. Checking the kit I have handy, the rear hatch was intended to be functional on the model, just via an odd 'snap-tite' method of assembly. The top hatch didn't open, which it may have done on the AMT kit (gotta check that...)

I remember in my early teens having the MPC TIE Interceptor in 1983, and the cockpit back hatch opened and it had a window too.

Does anyone remember this too as this model kit memory has now faded into legend, what with the original MPC model kit from 1983 being very rare to find.
I've just taken for granted that I still have (bits of) mine. Yep, as rbeach84 said, it was designed to open.

The top hatches on my original AMT Fighters have no hinge mechanism and were meant to be glued in place. I do not yet have the re-pop, so I can't speak to what Round 2 may or may not have altered besides the wings...

So skimming the conversation on the TIE pilots not seeing anything but out the front window, perhaps they use the same system the F-35 is supposed to have with cameras all over the outside so the pilot can literally see everywhere.

Don't know if they actually implemented that or not.

Back when they only cost $3.

Their on screen skills don't back that theory up. ;) That's what I was thinking though too.

Here is a old shot of mine, done in the wrong color. It shows off the rear window from the Interceptor kit, used on both. I also hacked the standard TIE body, to fit in the old Interceptor's wings.

...and the blue screen is the wrong shade, too much shadow to key out, the clear stands will show up in the shot...nag nag nag.....lol.
Models themselves look good. Even though they are suppose to have a tint of blue in them, I prefer a gray shade, maybe just a tad darker than this.

That was during my 'I want them to look the same as in the movie' phase. I want to build another set with the correct color. Whatever that is! :D I also now have the update with the correct wing shape, on the standard TIE.

Its tricky, because in the movies, they look very different from the models. I always thought a star destroyer was a dark bluish gray, but really, they were painted more a white maybe tad light gray. Lighting them for film made it so different.

Very nice, Edge10! Your 'hack' is exactly what R2 has done in the re-release...and what I had set to do. Just gotta wonder what they do with all those MPC bodies?

Cheers!

I know I'm losing my mind, but it seems the RPF is as well.

Back on track... this just popped up today:

Its better than the older MPC I'm currently working on, but some parts, like around the 6 vents on the top backside have all the same detailing, a lot which is wrong. Being cheaper, I can see why.

They couldn't afford to redo the whole kit, so they had to drawn the line somewhere.

Couple things. First, if this kit had been released with these improvements 20 years ago, I'd have been thrilled. I knew the hull curvature was wrong back in the early 80s, but the improved sidewalls would've been amazing. For those who can't afford a PG or don't think they have the skills yet to do it justice, this improved MPC is a good substitute.

Second, I'll just say that, for me, it's still the greatest box cover art of any Star Wars model before or since. That photo of the 5-footer is like looking at the Holy Grail.

Indeed it is! I used it to settle out a couple of decals when I was working on the 'decal inventory' (when?) a while ago, since it was a period pix, having stuff missing from the 'archived' model which has certainly lost some 'stuff' over time...

I wish that whoever painted the model for box art and shows had the time to do a more accurate job. For all the problems with the kit, especially for it’s time,it’s pretty faithfull, and a good paint job goes a long way.
