ROTJ Luke's lightsaber (from Nicksdad), finally finished

Some weeks ago I started looking for a good ROTJ hero saber. After an exhaustive quest, I decided to buy a Nicksdad's replica. I really liked it when I received it. It's made of aluminum, nice weight, very solid, simply good, but it required some work I never did before. With the help of some of you guys here, I could finally finish it with a satisfactory result. Here it is.

I wanted to get something as similar as possible to the original MOM prop.

This is what I got from Nicksdad.

There were some things I wanted to do. First, the pommel base was flat, so I had to dig a hole in the center of it using a swiss army knife and some screwdrivers.

Of course, I had to cover with masking tape all the parts that were not going to be painted. Oh, and the card from the control box, I just didn't like the brass color, which should be more copper-like, so I covered the black stripes with masking tape as well in order to primer and paint the brass-colored parts (in which I failed, so I had to primer and paint it complete later).

The primer stage got complicated. I originally used a Tamiya primer, but all efforts failed. I had to sand it complete and used car primer (I was going to use Zinc Chromate, but some of you told me not to use that, so I followed your advice). In the end, automotive primer worked pretty good.

I also primered the other parts, including the card for the control box (since first technique failed; I primered it all, painted it all black, and then repeated the masking tape thing with even stripes in order to paint the copper stripes).

The painting job was done, but I had to sand the rings later.

And everything was going out fine :D

I covered all painted parts with clear semi-gloss spray to protect paint from falling off. The work on the card did work this time.

I glued the acrylic arrows to the control box (actually this was the first thing I did). I wanted it to be like the original prop, so I didn't glued them centered as the idealized replicas, but in the right position as shown in the MOM picture.

So this time I was glad with the result of the whole control box.

I used epoxy to glue the aluminum parts, as suggested by some of you as well :) so thank you to all those who gave a good advice. This is the end result, of which I'm quite proud. I hope you like it!

Wow, great job on your saber! Nicksdad does some amazing work. You finished it out very nice!

outstanding! I agree with everyone else. Great paint job and build. This is Nicksdad? *****, people on here make better props than ILM sometimes haha. I don't really know who makes what on here so I'm building up my encyclopedia in my head (aka Russ, and everything he does, now Nicksdad and his sabers) Nice work!

Thanks! :) oh yes, guys here are more accurate even than master replicas. I must acknowledge also Anakin Starkiller as one of the best prop builders. Actually I wanted one of his ROTJ hero props, but they seem to be out of production for now, so I went for Nicksdad's instead, which is also great and has some advantages over Starkiller's, with the added value that I had to finish it and give it my personal touch.

Anakin Starkiller...Dan... I will admit I've done a little business with him, and bought from him, but never bothered to inquire into how good he was.

Dan's saber was superior accuracy wise.
The details include; the hole in the pommel and the raised ring around it, the separate screw on plate where the leds go on the control box, and the uneven grip ring widths to mention a few. I'm not bagging on Nicksdsd's saber, just clearing the air on some points.

manooga, you did a fine job painting your saber, but missed on some of the finer details in the neck area.

You masked this little bit that needs the copper paint.

Indeed manooga excellent paintjob . . . well done!

Here's a picture of the original and the details scarf man is talking about :

Thanks for your comments guys. My!! I just noticed that part in the neck where I missed the copper paint! You're right! And I must say I used those pictures together with many more for reference. Probably I put attention to Master Replicas and eFx pictures on that part.:lol well, I'll wait for time to make it's job, and when paint falls off I'll re-paint it correctly, haha. I still love it that way.

Great job on the saber! Very good choice of colours! I have a real soft spot for the Luke ROTJ in any of it's guises!

Well done man, this looks great. And nothing like a personal build to get that satisfaction.

Another name to add to the list is Rylo, he did a good run of hero Lukes back in the day. What I love about mine is the real copper neck.
