Has there been any real discussion about the com link used by the Rebels in Rogue One? Any thoughts on if it is a found item.

If it's a found object, it's likely heavily modified to allow it to light up when the Rebels are using it.

Looked like it was just projecting out of the top to me, but I need to watch the movie again to be sure.

That's what i was thinking too. I might guess the top was more translucent than transparent to keep it from projecting a beam of light and more of a glow.

Looked like it was just projecting out of the top to me, but I need to watch the movie again to be sure.

I think, they put some metallic mesh on the top (just like on handheld microphones), where the light projected through. I'd say that's what caused the diffused effect.
