ROGUE ONE Jyn Erso - open build thread!

snap - I came to the same conclusion a while back.

Now I remember that! I've had some experiences with really crappy, cheap-looking, consumer puff paint in the past, that doesn't look very good after the first wear, so I really didn't want to go that route. But, after a fruitless search for my original assumptions, I am learning that I should pay better attention, here. ;)

I don't have any experience with screen printing (yet) but it appears that on the higher end, the Jacquard Screen Printing Puff Additive, would be the best way to go, since you could control the amount of puff and the color relatively easily.

http://www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/jacquard-screen-printing-puff-additive.html

On the low end, I've ordered some white Tulip Puffy paint and soft matte paint in brown and black, to do some cheap tests for the bars on my first version of the pants. (Since the jacket is optional, I can put it off until the temps are below 90F.) The Matte won't puff on its own when hit with the heat gun, but the Puffy will. I have no idea what will happen when they are mixed.

A better look at Jyn's outfit and a part from her blaster.

I am also trying to nail down the fabrics and colors. Every new photo provides more information but does not seem to make anything definitive. The newest photos from Entertainment Weekly do point out a couple of things for me about Jyn's blouse. It appears to be woven fabric and the front yoke is cut on the bias. (That is good news for me as I have continued to struggle getting knit fabric to look acceptable.) As far as colors I am leaning toward the photos that appear in the "outdoor" scenes and the transportation center shots. For the vest I have three different brown twills I am considering just because I already have them. One is "brown-olive" which is more of a traditional military hue and tends toward the green side of the spectrum and will work better with a olive drab battle jacket (if that is the correct color for it), a "nutmeg" brown which is more of a fashion color and tends toward the red end of brown, and a plain brown. The plain brown looks most like the transportation photos. For the topstitching on the vest the most I can say is it appears to be a lighter color. Khaki or Camel are my two choices at this time. The quilting stitching appears to be the same as the vest color. The new photos did not help in that regard. As other have suggested, the blouse appears to be a gray-blue. So far I have not found anything I like, but now I will switch my search from knit to wovens and may have more choices. I am interested in others' ideas. I know many are waiting for Celebration Europe to provide more photos, but I am concerned that unless someone takes the time to accurately obverse and report their findings on what they see of the costumes first-hand, we will still have as many questions as final answers. And I will have one less month to get things finished.

I just noticed something about the photos I saved from the ew.com site for later reference. Although I have the monitor on my computer calibrated for what I hope to be accurate color reproduction, I notice all of the character "head shots" I downloaded have a blue background whereas on the original website the photos have a white background. The color of the rest of the photo is also impacted by this different background. This may be a problem which is limited to my setup, but if others experience a similar issue, viewing the color of the photos directly from the website might provide more accurate color information. I would be interested if others experience this same "color-shift".

Edit: I found my problem. My default settings had changed. Instead of saving the images in a lossless .png format they were saved in a lossy .jpeg format. I was going to delete this entire post but my error and the correct method may be of value to others.

I was thinking that we might be able to get some sense of how the belt is fastened from the LEGO minifig picture, but I can't tell what's going on here. Also, while a lot of the costume seems accurate, the holster setup doesn't match what we've seen so far, so the belt not might be right either.

Thoughts?

I hope some fans will be fortunate enough to attend the Star Wars Europe Celebration on July 15-17 in London. (The event and panel schedule is now available on-line.) Although each attendee will have their own areas of interest they will focus on, I was wondering if some of you could assist those of us who cannot attend in person? To minimize the effort of anyone willing to help and the maximize the value to those looking for additional information, I have started a list of details which either first-hand observation or high-resolution photos could help resolve. Any assistance or answers to these questions would be much appreciated.

Blouse
What is the best description of the blouse color? The best estimate so far is a gray-blue.
Is the blouse fabric knit or woven? Photo evidence tends toward woven.
The blouse clearly has a front yoke, does it have a back yoke as well?
What is the length of the sleeves? Photo evidence tends toward 3/4 length.

Vest
What is the best description of the vest color? Brown is the basic hue but can anything more specific be stated?
What color is the topstitching on the vest? Photo evidence tends toward a lighter color than the base fabric perhaps khaki or camel.
Can you obtain a high-resolution photo of the bottom of the hanging hose greebie on the left front?
Can you obtain a high-resolution photo of the rectangular greebie on the left front waistband?
Can you obtain a high-resolution photo of how the hose greeblies are attached on both the left and right sides, and both the outside and inside surfaces of the vest?
Can you identify the color and fabric of any inside lining? The edges or facings of the vest are the same as the outer surface but it has been suggested that the inside lining might be an orange similar to a rebel fighter pilot jumpsuit.
Can you obtain a high-resolution photo of the “quilted” back of the vest?

Gun
Can you obtain a high-resolution photo of the barrel end of her weapon and barrel shroud?
Can you obtain a high-resolution photo of the rear of the barrel shroud? The front of the shroud has a series of holes down the side, then a black ring which may attach the shroud to a rail on the bottom of the shroud, then to the rear of the black ring what appears to be a series of grooves going around the shroud.
If the gun is out of the holster can you obtain a high-resolution photo of the rail system located along the bottom of the barrel shroud?
If the gun is out of the holster can you obtain a high-resolution photo of the sides of the weapon where additional plates have been added? The right side plate seems to be attached with three machine screws and the left side seems to be attached with two machine screws. Knowing the type of screw head would be helpful.

Belt and Holster
Can you obtain high-resolution photos of the left and right side of the belt?
If the method of belt closure is obvious can you obtain a high-resolution photo of the closure/buckle?
Can you obtain high-resolution photos of the belt rivets which function to attach the straps and also as a decorative element?
Can you identify how the holster is attached to the belt?
Can you obtain high-resolution photos of the holster, belt and leg strap from multiple angles? The rear view would be especially helpful. Also the upper leg strap seems to have one top (female) portion of a snap and the lower strap, three bottom (male) portions to provide a degree of adjustment. The upper leg strap also has a “keeper” loop to the right of the snaps. The keeper loop appears to be sewn onto the front side of the upper strap so the lower strap can be inserted into the keeper.

Tonfa
Can you obtain a high-resolution photo of how the tonfa is attached to Jyn's belt?
If you cannot provide the method of attachment, can you provide a high-resolution photo of the top endcap of the tonfa?

Battle Jacket
What is the best description of the jacket color?
What is the best description of the color of the strips which run down the sleeves of the jacket?
Can you identify the method by which the stripes have been applied? It has been suggested the strips are screen printed with a dimensional or “puff” ink.
Can you obtain high-resolution photos of the jacket from multiple angles? The rear view, the right front side and the lower left front side would be especially helpful.
Does Jyn's jacket have a greeblie on the right-side of the chest similar to that on Captain Andor's jacket? If so can you obtain a high-resolution of either Jyn's or Captain Andor's chest greeblie?

Boots
Can you obtain high-resolution photos of the boots from multiple angles? It seems clear the boots have a lace-up front which have been covered by two leather flaps and a non-functional buckle. The flaps may be attached by three lines of stitching on the inside edge of each flap, but this would require specialized equipment so other options may be possible.
Can you determine the closure mechanism of the flaps?

I think what is going on here with the boots is this:

Each flap is two thicknesses of leather, sewn together with the single line of stitching around the edges. This allows snaps to be attached to the inside layer, which then snap at least the top flap to the boot to close it. You can see two roundish brown spots where the leather has worn as if there's something underneath.

The bottom flap may have a similar snap closure; however, if the buckle is similar to a ski boot buckle, it is possible to make it a working buckle. Typically, these buckles attach with rivets to the boot (on the outside of the foot), and the wire bail on the inside end hooks onto a ridged piece. When the hinge end is snapped down, it tightens the latch. On Jyn's boots, the ridged piece is replaced by what appears to be a leather strap sewn around the bail to attach it into the flap. So the buckle itself could still work, you just wouldn't be able to adjust the length (the narrow silver strip in the center is an adjustment screw) or open it very far - just enough to loosen the flap to get your foot in and out. The top corner of the lower flap does appear to be cut out similarly to the bottom corner, which might leave just enough room to attach the buckle to the main boot. The buckle closure would also probably be more secure than snaps at this area of the foot.

I do believe the flaps are attached with the three lines of stitching. Special equipment would certainly make this easier, but it is entirely possible (but obnoxious) to sew this by hand. And I suppose there's always glue.

As seen on Instagram:

Jyn's hat and goggles also come with a new blaster and something that looks kind of like a loose jacket or an Endor poncho.

Here is my take on the back of Jyn Erso’s vest. The main elements include a yoke at the top and a quilted body. In my analysis, the quilting is very symmetric but not completely “regular”. The bottom and top rows seem to follow a different pattern from the three center rows. In the middle of these two rows the space which occupies two square blocks in the other rows seem to contain three rectangular blocks. In my pattern, two 5x5 cm blocks (each 5 cm in height) are divided into a set of 3 – 4 – 3 cm. As always I am interested in other people’s comments or ideas.

Just a note on my experiences trying to dye the webbing on the military sleeping bag straps. I has a lot of trouble getting them to look less green. I dyed them, I bleached them, I soaked them in upholstery paint, and i soaked them in red wine. Finally, I soaked myself in red wine. It was the most successful thing I tried.

I took a picture in full sun as well as indoors. the outdoor images, in particular, veer toward the green tones. The images are, top to bottom;
1. soaked in brown upholstery paint
2. brown dye
3. soaked in red wine
4.original color

I've started my Jyn cosplay for a local con in September and I'm on the boots at the moment. I managed to find something similar to the buckles in the pic below but unfortunately they're about $35 a pop (or more, depending on the country). Anyone know of anything that looks similar?

This is what I've found that's similar. It's a Ducati Tank Latch.

This thread has been really helpful so far! Happy cosplaying!
That style of latch is an adjustable over-center latch or adjustable draw latch. They're used in loads of applications.

Protex is the big manufacturer of them but there's nothing quite like Jyn's in their catalogue.

I think the Ducati latch will be a little too large as well as being a slightly different shape but it's pretty close.

I am currently working on a Cassian Andor build which utilizes the same latch on the boots as Jyn. I stumbled on a couple of the ducati latches and comparing them to the pictures can say that tey are too long and that if they used the ducati latches, i suspect that they trimmed the latch. If shortened, the latches are about the right size.

I would say that they are definitely not the ducati latch. THe adjustment bar mounting is quite different, the ducati latch has the rectangular hole which is not visible on the boots and the boots have that separate piece at the rear edge which is not on the ducati.

Also, those ducati latches are quite big.

I do think the buckles look like old ski boot buckles from the '80s or '90s. Unfortunately, individual buckles are hard to find, the best way to get them is probably to just get a cheap used pair of boots. They would be the smaller size - either the instep or toe buckle, or possibly from a pair of kid's boots.

Preliminary pattern for the boot flaps: lines are stitching, X's are where the snaps go, the rectangle is where the bail of the buckle attaches. The top corner notch on the lower flap may be need to be modified to fit around the attachment point of the buckles, I won't be able to test it until I get some buckles. The innermost line on the inner grouping of stitching lines up with the edge of the boot/lacing grommets on my pair of boots, which are American military surplus. (The correct -but expensive- boots are probably the Frye Veronica combat boot as someone suggested earlier.)

Sews hooks onto waistband of pants. "Hooray, I finished my first costume piece." Looks at Celebration costume display. "Stretch Cotton‽ Argh!"

(I always knew they were a first draft. But the whole sewing hooks on part, completely true.)

I always like to catch some of the “little things” which help complete a character’s outfit. In watching the new Celebrations Reel which was released this morning, I have added a few new elements to Jyn Erso.

At timestamp 0:32 we see Jyn has a leather(?) cord around her neck. What kind of an amulet does it hold?
At 0:38 we see Jyn in the marketplace giving a “gift” to a young girl. (Fruit or thermal detonator?)
At 1:21 we see Jyn with the data pad which may contain the stolen Death Star plans. We can also see some new details of the “rail system” of Jyn’s weapon.
At 1:22 we get a confirmation of the orange lining of Jyn’s vest.
At 1:39 we get a good look at the cap and googles the resistance uses. We saw a similar setup on Jyn in an earlier poster.
At 1:43 we can start a whole new round of fan speculation. Everyone has been asking “Who is Rey’s mother”. Is this Rey as a child? Jyn as a child? A child as a child? Why is the child in this clip?
At 2:00 another cosplay makeup opportunity to add a scar to Jyn’s right eyebrow.
At 2:15 (and earlier at 0:50) we see Jyn adding knee pads to your uniform. Edit: On closer examination this is just dirt and mud not kneepads.
