ROGUE ONE Jyn Erso - open build thread!

Has anyone sourced the goggles yet? been looking, but haven't found an exact match.

I believe it was "Parts of Star Wars" who identified the goggles. They are a vintage product made by Cebe in France and are Model 15. They come up occasionally on eBay. However be careful as there is the correct Model 15; White with one snap at the bridge of the nose and one directly above it, and a newer Model which is also White but it has TWO snaps spaced along the top and one snap at the bridge of the nose. There is an even newer Model with the same two snaps on top and none at the bridge but it also has the name cebe at the brow so I do not think this type will be mistaken as the correct version.

Hi girls, thanks you for your amazing job !
I'm looking for those Lange Boots, do you know where can I find them ? If some of you have the Lange boots, can I buy you 2 straps of it ?

I have extras that I can sell to you! I'm only asking $3 for a pair (including shipping), so PM me your address and I can send them to you.

So pages and pages ago in this thread I saw somebody tried dyeing the gloves with Chocolate Brown Angelus leather dye, and so I went ahead and tried the same dye in Medium Brown. This is my first time dyeing leather, but I used Angelus Preparer and Deglazer to remove the factory finish. After applying SEVERAL coats - almost the entire bottle, really - this was the result. I know the color isn't terribly even in places (I attribute this to having super poor lighting in my apartment), the gloves are just awfully generic brown, and not dark enough. I think the color "coffee" for the Angelus brand would be better, or like a grayish brown would be better. The browns are quite red, really. Another option I might have is to add a light layer of black Angelus acrylic leather paint, which is actually fantastic for weathering purposes, but I think I'll just go ahead and try the color "coffee". I've added a photo of the wrist strap to replace the original, and it took the paint much more evenly, even after deglazing - notice how red the medium brown dye is? Go for something darker, if you haven't tried dyeing yet.

Oh, P.S. - if you haven't bought gloves yet, these are the XS size. I've got comically small hands and they're enormous on me, so I'll have to take them in once the dye situation is figured out.

T5H, I had to join the site to access your Imperial Binders design and I am glad I did. Your design matches up to all the Rogue One landmarks I was able to find on the limited number of available photos. Thank you for sharing.

I've finished the gloves yesterday. Here is how it came out.
DSC09185.JPGgants.jpg

I used a combo of 3 leather dyes : Eco-flo gel antique (medium brown), Eco Flo leather dye (bison brown) and Saphir (havane brown).
It was really difficult to dye it first, as the yellow color was still showing on the leather. I used the glazifer and let it dry for 1h. Then I started to put medium brown dye. I used many coats of medium brown and bison (almost 6, alternatively) to get the look I want. I add a bit of havane color on some part (not much). I applied it with makeup pads to darken the part that I want. I used Q-tip to dye the seam that were still yellow, and rubbed it.

For the circle, I used brown nubruck and black lamb leather (that look close enough to the real gloves).
I cut the strap on a piece of leather (natural color), and then dyed it with bison and brown color. It's slightly darker then the gloves. I cut other two pieces of leather to do the lining. I used again lamb leather, which was a bad idea, because it was too fragile. I sewed a snap on it, then stitched the two leather part together (the top of the snap is hidden under the leather), but the inner leather coat broke. I have to do it again and pick a more resistant leather.

This is awesome - I wasn't sure if I'd used too many layers of dye, or if I was doing something wrong, being a total newbie at this. I ordered darker dye earlier today and more deglazer, and I have some brown Eco-Flo at home that might give me better results, so I'll test it today. Your gloves look fantastic!

By the way, how many of you are going to Star Wars Celebration Orlando in April? I'll be there!

Here's a photo of my Cebe 15 goggles for reference, if it helps. On the right are the screen accurate goggles, and on the left are what seem to be a knockoff of the Cebe 15s. Worth keeping an eye out for the knockoffs if they are cheaper or easier to come by, since they really are very close in design and could be made to look screen-accurate without much work.

Just an update on the fabrics I bought from Fabrics.com. I took the following photos in natural light this morning.

I purchased cotton stretch twill (Kaufman Ibiza in Charcoal) for the pants, which is truly gorgeous, but the fabric is still too light and needs to be VERY lightly dyed dark gray or black to be the correct color. Otherwise it's medium weight and I hope will work perfectly for Jyn's pants.

The shirt fabric, which was recommended by a few other posters in this thread, is Kaufman Essex Linen in Graphite (this is the lighter-colored fabric in the photos). I hope you can see that the fabric is sort of the perfect combination of blue and gray, but looking at photos of Jyn, I wonder if a light wash of brown dye would give it a more accurate edge? Or, perhaps it can be weathered with a light wash of brown paint?

Either way, these fabrics are very nearly similar in color, but the stretch cotton is darker, which is what I was going for when ordering them.20161011_083654.jpg20161011_083650.jpg20161011_083629.jpg20161011_083619.jpg926053625002f6b9b49dd91984eff70f.jpgStar-Wars-Rogue-One-Jyn-Erso-Cassian-Andor.jpeg

According to Screen Rant, the final trailer for Rogue One is due out tomorrow 10/13/16. At that point I expect all the details we have about Jyn Erso will be about as good as we will have prior to the release of the film itself. I am looking forward to all those with sharp eyes to share their observations.

So much good work on the gloves everyone! They were the first thing I purchased, but I've been putting off/procrastinating/something ordering dye (both fabric and leather) for months, With your examples I ended up ordering the Angelus in Brown, Black, and Neutral (for mixing) after my tests with Mahogany (Fiebing's) was far too red.

Also, with your help, I braved drilling out the rivets on the buckles from the front (instead of the regularly suggested back.) I used a dremmel with get the hole started, but used the regular drill to go all the way through. Took a long time, and I basically just kept going until the rivet was weak enough to snap off. Worked like a charm! Thank you!

I'm finishing up some major adjustments on the vest. I found that several layers of padstiched felt (plain old polyester from Joann) makes an accurate stiffening layer for the front sections. It gives it a really good weight while remaining flexible. (If you have access to thicker 1/4" felt, you wouldn't even need the padstiching.)

Now, just one more sleep until the trailer!

I was able to pop the buckles out of the ski boots with a screwdriver (well, more like hammer the screwdriver under the buckle, and crank at it for 10 minutes or so until finally the plastic weakened enough to pull the whole rivet and washer through), then I used a nipper in a bench vise (couldn't find the metal hacksaw, didn't want to dig out the power tools) to snap the rivet off.

I also finished the snaps on the top flaps on the boots and wore them around running errands for a few hours. One boot is perfect. The other must have had the flap sewn slightly askew, because it pulls a boot lace hook right into my ankle somehow, and I also can't get the lower snap to stay closed. I might wear them to work tomorrow to test how bad it is, because it was such a pain to sew that I don't want to do it over! Sewing that bottom flap on is going to be rough, and glue won't cut it.

I want the buckles to be functional on my boots (partly for "realism", partly because it would be really hard to rivet a pair of snaps inside the toe of the boots), so either the notch I had put in the flap has to get a lot bigger, or perhaps I could cut a slot for the base of the buckle.

Trailer in the morning, and the new fabric store opens tomorrow (though I probably won't go til this weekend)! Yay!

Really difficult lighting and not really much new information to be gleaned, but the shirt with no vest over it! (Trying to decide if this is evidence of a back yoke or just more folds.)

Hi all, I'm a newbie to posting but I've been lurking here since this thread started (and on the alternate outfit Rey thread before that!). You guys are so amazingly talented and creative, and I'm looking forward to learning from you now that I've decided to do a Jyn costume as well. My goal is to have the costume done well enough to wear to the premiere (so vest, belt, and boots done, with something close enough off the rack for pants; and then finish everything up as accurate as possible for Star Wars Celebration Orlando in April.) I just bought my fabric for the vest, shirt, and pants and am excited to get started.
smithjohnj would you be willing to share a scale drawing for the neck you created for the shirt? Your photos look great and I'm hoping to learn how you did it. My mom is doing all the sewing, but we're both new to pattern making and trying to figure everything out together. We already used the patterns you shared for the vest and have it mocked up on pattern paper, with the plan of doing a muslin this weekend. I think it's going to work perfectly.

Okay! I think I've figured out this glove dyeing situation, though I did it a bit differently than Kendra. I originally used Angelus Medium Brown leather dye, which was too bright and red, so I dyed over that color with Angelus Coffee leather dye. Alone, this was too dark, so I used the Preparer and Deglazer to remove bits of Coffee color, revealing the lighter color underneath, and giving them a nice weathered look. I think I'm going to continue to work on them to reveal more lighter color, particularly around the fingers and knuckles, but I think they're looking much better and are nearly finished. I'll probably add the finisher today (and I might even condition them after all this deglazer, which dried them out quite a bit). Funny thing is it turns out I had Eco-Flo Bison leather dye this whole time. A whole unused bottle of it. Derp. So now I can start working on the attachments.
