ROGUE ONE Jyn Erso - open build thread!

Here is another shot.

Same here! I happened to find exactly what I was looking for at a thrift store for about $10, but now my problem is I can't remove the straps. I tried cutting through the boot (which didn't work at all) and then I tried to undo the screws holding the straps down, but I still had no luck. Does anyone know a more efficient way of getting these straps off?

We just drilled them off where they were attached to the boot, but I also used a different Lange boot so I'm not sure if they are attached the same way on yours.

What kind of drill did you use? I'm afraid I don't have very many tools at my disposal so my options are a bit limited.

When I tried to drill the rivets out of my Lange boots the rivet started spinning and I could no longer make any progress. Instead of trying to clamp the rivet, I ended up using a metal hacksaw to cut through the stem of the rivet. That ripped up the plastic of the boot but I was not trying to save them so that was not a problem for me.

Thanks, Kendra and Spectreseven. Really helpful info and photos! Spectreseven, you even got the stitching between her fingers! Was that hand done?

I noticed that some dye leaked through the stitch holes where I took off the velcro, but other than that it was okay. I put pieces of paper towels in the gloves while dying them and rolled up tissues and stuffed them in the fingers, too.

Hi girls, thanks you for your amazing job !
I'm looking for those Lange Boots, do you know where can I find them ? If some of you have the Lange boots, can I buy you 2 straps of it ?

Thanks! Yeah, I hand stitched between the fingers and resewed all of the decorative stitching with waxed thread since I made them before we had many reference photos and I mistakenly thought that hers were restitched. Oops. I've got a second pair of Black Diamond gloves so I'll try your paper towel trick when I remake them.

Hi all,

I'm new here! I've been following this thread and I just want to thank you all for your incredible progress and updates on your versions of Jyn Erso. I just bought fabric yesterday from fabric.com that I hope will work nicely, based on what we know the fabrics are, and based on your suggestions.

These are what I opted for, and they're in the mail now: Kaufman Essex Linen in Graphite (http://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics/essex_yarn_dyed/E064-295/) for the shirt, and Kaufman Ibiza Cotton Stretch Twill in Charcoal (http://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics/ibiza_stretch_twill/I083-1071/) for the pants. I know colors are weird online, and the "charcoal" color looks quite blue in the sample photo, but quite dark grey on a dress somebody made with the same fabric on Google. I'm not against dying anything, of course, but I'll let you know what the color verdict is when they arrive.

I plan to start the vest later, but there are some nice vest/jacket patterns on Green Pepper Inc. (http://www.thegreenpepper.com/product-category/patterns-adult/), which is where I bought the pattern for my Leia Hoth snowsuit. I haven't decided whether I'll choose one of these patterns yet, but it's a nice place to look.

I've also been searching for comparable Lange Z series boots with no luck, except on eBay for about $50 each - I simply can't justify paying that much for two clasps! I know I'm new to this forum, but I'd be so happy to buy two extra clasps from anybody. Please PM me if you're interested and willing/able! The boots I bought several days ago for $30 from Amazon, but I opted for a super cheap version since I've done some leather weathering before and I know I can fix them up. They aren't the authentic pair, but I know they'll do perfectly. The proper clasps will help, anyway!

Thanks again for all that you've done so far for this costume. I'm so happy to have found you guys, and I'll post updates as I go.

Yeah, I couldn't get the buckles off either. Thanks for the ideas!

Thrift shops are going to be your best bet, most of them should be starting to put out the winter/ski stuff around now. Mine were about $14. If there's a ski shop or ski hill nearby, you could also see if they have a swap sale in the fall, too. The buckles you want are the small toe buckles off of a pair of boots from the '80s or '90s, newer Lange buckles are a different style. Ebay has them sometimes, too.

Unfortunately, there's only one set of the small buckles on most pairs of these boots, as far as I can tell.

Hey guys! This is one of the best pics of the binders I've seen(somewhat blown up image). It also shows what appears to be a snap closure on the gloves I hadn't noticed before.

Okay, I have managed to get some comparison pics of the hook types from the Czech back pack strapping rigs. The narrower hook comes from the leather rig and the wider buckle from the webbing rig.

The ones from the leather rig, the narrower one, appears to me to be closer to the size used on Jyn's vest - as per smithjohnj observations.

If you look at the narrow hook with 1" / 25 mm webbing the fit is tight... In the hand one can see the round of the bend between the upper horizontal and the vertical sides, this is not coming through very well in the photo.

The narrow hook also has a closer profile / silhouette to the vest hook...

The wider hook looks a bit too wide? A bit too much of the upper bar shows on either side of the webbing? In the hand I can slide the hook side-to-side 1/4" / 6 mm or so either way. It doesn't 'feel' correct.

Not the most compelling review I'm afraid.

Actually, looking at the hook does it overlap the vertical tubing, or is it tucked behind? If the latter these buckles may not be correct, unless the prop builders added a small horizontal bar across the lowest part of the hook? Look at the pics of Jyn, what do you think?

There are several parts of the vest web greeblie. These are my observations which I presented previously. I believe the base is 1" webbing. The hook is slightly less than 1" or 25 mm wide and about 1 cm from front to back. The hook rests on the webbing and is attached at the top with a piece of narrower (less than 25 mm) webbing which surrounds the flat top and is sewn to the wider webbing. In the middle of the hook, behind the hook and lower bottom bar there are 4 separate hollow rubber tubes. These hoses are held in place by what I call a hose clip which is about 20 x 20 mm. (I provided my design for these clips in another post). Beadalon (a jewelry/beading supplier) makes a 4 mm and 6 mm hose. Using the 4 mm hose easily fits inside the hook and under the bottom bar. (EDIT: So the hook 'hinges" down over the hose clip and top of the hoses.) There are a total of 7 hose clips( inside and outside, both sides) and one left, lower, external connector for which I still do not have a good design or clear reference photo

Here is the photo I use to reject the ROK hook option and show the relationship of hook depth, hose, and webbing. However I am always interested in what others get from their analysis of available information.

Thanks smithjohnj

I am happy with the analysis as I just think that the narrower hook has the correct 'feel'.

Wanted to run this through the post as I am sending one out, and wanted to make sure it is as accurate as possible.

Cheers.

Yes, agree, not the ROK. That also shows how the hook lays, which answers my previous 'wobble'.

Thanks
