I think it will be a choice of what they want to do to end the characters story arcs more than anything else and how they want to weave them into the SW universe in both future productions and the past.
Watching the start of "A New Hope" its pretty obvious that the rebels get the data on the Death Star transmiited off Scarif during the battle to end up on the Blockade Runner which then jumps into hyperspace pursued by Darth Vader. So thats essentially the direct link to the openning of SW that ends it so quickly before ANH. You do see that shot of Jyn high upon a tower when the Tie fighter suddenly appears so I am guessing thats part of the climax.
But there are so many things they can do with the story it will drive you slightly mad even trying to work it all out.I've got about half a dozen different versions. Do they go full darkside and kill everybody off,or will they let a very few survive , or does the victory enable the bulk of people to go on to have further adventures in the immediate period afterward but not directly linked to the Skywalker story. They are after all, a "Rogue unit" operating independantly.
When you go back and watch ANH its pretty much a classic pursuit and mission movie as well and everything actually happens over a very brief period of time, barely a couple of days. Its really only past this point it becomes the branching saga of the Skywalker family in the OT and into TFA.
So I think "Rogue One" will essentially be almost be like the first half of a two part movie , its grittier twin in the two part story of the 1st Death Star. Like I have said before in the thread, my heart leapt when I heard they were doing this because in the forty odd years since ANH I've come up with so many different versions of this, none, I have to say, that look as promising as this does.
I do hope that given Jyns kind of black market/criminal /family background there is enough wriggle room left that by the end of it , RO could possibly be another trilogy developing during the same OT time scale allowing Jyns story to broaden further into the SW universe (mainly because I love that period) and its a huge one at that. I am hoping that the "reshoots" reflected that and that some things were changed with hindsight as the story group refined their ideas.
Ultimately much will depend on how well this performs at the BO. Remember these films have been produced in a very short time frame, I mean who the hell would have guessed we would be getting a SW film every Xmas!!!!!!
